J. Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive

There is enough packed inside 2014 Forest Hills Drive to make your palms sweat, urging for J. Cole to push through the finish line with a flourish. Cole has come home. The concept  and a deft one — is the prodigal son returning. Making his way back to what’s important, to what’s at his core. He channels a few different emcees to do this. Kendricks’ multi-verse on “03’ Adolescence,” “Wet Dreamz,” and “G.O.M.D.” As well as his own flame pit of bravado and melancholy on a “Tale Of Two Citiez,” “Fire Squad,” “No Role Modelz,” and “Hello,” and there’s Drake sprinkled generously throughout the narrative as J. Cole elects to sing quite a few of his own hooks and quite a bit in general. The result is an album that wobbles violently between narratives, the different trade winds he’s dealing in colliding with each other in sometimes-unforeseen ways.

Cole channels young Simba early in the record (after the preamble that is “January 28th”), but the preamble is one of the most interesting songs on the album because he tips his hand with the hook, “Don’t give ‘em too much you / Don’t let ‘em take control / Its one thing you do / Don’t let ‘em taint your soul / If you believe in God / One thing’s for sure / If you don’t aim too high / Then you aim too low.” It’s his next line, though, that requires a bit of investigation: “What’s the price for a black man’s life? / I check the toe tag, not one zero in sight / I turn the TV on, not one hero in sight / Unless he dribble or he fiddle with mics.” It’s this disconnect from his own stature that’s jarring and important to the arc of the album. Simba hasn’t yet realized who he is. This lack of knowledge of self is part of the albums overall amble forward as the rest shows you the journey that leads to his return. It’s an interesting choice, as Cole moves away from neat closure — at least early on.

After the controversial “Fire Squad,” Cole time-skips with “St. Tropez,” hitching a ride on samples of Chaka Khan’s “Hollywood” and Esther Phillips “That’s All Right With Me.” Queuing up a theme of black man lost, Cole transforms into “Hollywood” Cole. “G.O.M.D” reveals this second Cole to be strangling the original. The guy who postured to get his High School crush into bed is now diving through meaningless relationships left and right. The noise machine that is Cole’s voice works here, as it reveals the drowning, vulnerable Cole in juxtaposition to the assured, confident imposter. He’s also making fun of Rap as a whole here, and as usual, pointing out how the money, women, and clothes aesthetic steals from his perception of authenticity. It very much feels like MGMT’s “Time To Pretend.” He could have easily had them on the hook sleep singing “This is our decision / To live fast and die young / We’ve got the vision, now let’s have some fun / Yeah, it’s overwhelming, but what else can we do? / Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?” But he chooses to do everything himself, and this choice defines the album for good or ill.

The album get’s angular after this, running through very familiar tropes with varying degrees of success. Dealing with a lovely but shallow woman on “No Role Modelz,” as he awkwardly slings the fact that he wants a, “Real love / A Jada and Will love.” “Hello” then sees him baring the fangs of real emotion as he pushes existential heartache, navigating the idea that what you want isn’t necessarily what you need. His demons make an appearance, as well, talking himself out of love because he’d have to be the stepfather to her two children. The extremely relatable “Apparently” follows, and is the beginning of the end for “Hollywood” Cole, as he comes back to himself and struggles on back to 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Then the kicker, “Love Yourz,” where he ties it all together with the hook, “There’s no such thing as a life that’s better than yours.” Providing all together too neat of an ending, which he did not hint at earlier.

There are many things that can be said bout J. Coles’ 2014 Forest Hills Drive. It is ambitious and hokey and simplistic. It tries its hand at twists and comes up short (“Wet Dreamz”), and it sticks to Cole’s strategy instead of changing it drastically. It is less artistic than it means to be, but it is truer than anything he’s ever made. Its narrative, the tropes, and the strategies are completely overcome by the albums terrifying integrity. It is immensely relatable because it is not afraid to be corny and cliche´. It does not shirk the average experience; it embraces it and, somehow, makes you feel like we’re all in this together. And in this age of false irony, and the squashing of experience down into preconceived individual events where we all believe ourselves to be so different and so special, it’s fascinating to see an artist delve so fearlessly into the completely familiar.

    1. It’s a beautiful album. Cole’s best studio album so far. Born Sinner was great, but this is just better and more varied. Don’t know if it’s better FNL or The Warm Up but I think it’s up there with those projects.

    2. Album Review:That was TERRIBLE,i mean just AWFUL!How long this guy gonna be allowed makin music?!?NEEEEXT!

    3. However it is definitely his best studio album at least the first five songs than it gets generic to me. I feel there is some filler songs or songs that didn’t make the last album. Hello? Fire Squad? Apparently?

    4. One of the few real artist I’m the game who isn’t afraid to stand for what’s right and promotes a better path for our youth. He didn’t make this album with record sales in mind. It’s vintage Cole in current times.

    5. Album of the year n his best album to date, u guys need to stop sleeping on cole, Kendrick is his only competition

      1. Nah man, Kanye is the greatest rapper of this generation, or at least the greatest overall artist. Kendrick is my fucking man…haven’t been as excited about a new artist since I first heard The College Dropout. Cole is nice, but I don’t think he’s ready to be mentioned among names like Kanye, Jay-Z, or even Kendrick Lamar just yet.

    6. “He channels a few different emcees to do this. Kendricks’ multi-verse on “03’ Adolescence,” “Wet Dreamz,” and “G.O.M.D.” ”

Kendrick invented rapping from different perspectives? Even if you want to pretend he started that with GKMC, go back to Cole’s first album which released in 2011. Lost Ones. Multi-perspective song. Cut it out fam.

    7. The best album this year definitely his best studio album. It’s a cohesive album. Cole’s version of NWTS with elements of GKMC story telling.

    8. Another mediocre album from a solid lyricist. There’s a couple of bangers on here (Fire Squad is fire), but there are typical J Cole snoozers. 3/5. I’m glad I checked this out on stream as opposed to buying this average project. His best work to date is a mixtape (Friday Night Lights).

    9. J Cole best albums so far! I’ve been following Cole since the Warm Up and i must say he has really stepped up his game with this one. When J Cole wants to spit FIRE he delivers. First listen through the album and i was shocked, i thought to myself “Wow what a GREAT album…such a genuine feeling, remineded me of how Cole first stared and how he progressed… J Cole if you read this you did a great job THANK YOU for the new music! Keep it up…defiantly want to hear more. My TOP 5 songs on the album are “A Tale of 2 Citiez””Fire Squad””G.O.M.D.””No Role Modelz””Wet Dreamz”. No order……GO BUY THE ALBUM!!!! FOREST HILLS DRIVE

    10. Sort of hard to respect a review that says Cole “comes up short” on Wet Dreamz. That song embodies so much of what makes him a superior artist. His honesty, originality, flow/bars, and storytelling ability are all on full display. Also, your comparison to Kendrick is just a complete swing a miss. Sort of unfortunate that DX felt that need to have a review come out before the album even drops (congrats on being one of the firsts!), mostly because after less than a week of listening to an album I am not sure how you could think you have a good enough grasp on it to provide a definitive rating.

    11. This shit is best album of the year why is it getting 4.0.? Maybe its not pop enough. ? Maybe he’s missing feature.? Maybe he’s not the best singer.? But this is a peronal album and i fux with that.

      1. this album is nowhere near being “album of the year”. i’d say it’s probably up there with, or maybe even THE best j. cole album to date.. but it’s not album of the year no way. run the jewels 2, prhyme, wu-tang, schoolboy Q.. i could go on naming albums from this year that are better by a huge margin. i give this album a solid 3/5

    12. After my first, I instantly feel this will be one of the best albums of the year. I loved the honesty and introspection that was put into this album, the amazing production that either put me at ease or had my adrenaline rushing, and had me visualize specific things. For example, the track St. Tropez made me think of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s “At the Moulin Rouge” painting. This will forever be one of my favorite projects from Cole.

    13. This dude gets so much hype, it’s a good album but people are so hungry for up and coming talent, that you can be pretty good these days and be considered great. When the rest of your peers are Drake, Wale, Meek Mil, etc. then the bar is not that high to leap over. Nice job of introducing some positive content and storytelling but still not the best technically. Best J Cole album definitely defines it.

    14. Didn’t think he could have made a better album but he proved me wrong again forest hill drive is so fucking amazing and j Coles a lyrical genuis a fucking poet

    15. I like this album sure he’s a cornball at times. But the content is relatable. This is a solid project start to finish. He has found his identity as an MC he isn’t the most lyrical rapper in the game but he holds his own with this project. It’s a classic because of the authenticity. He’s not faking, fronting or bringing falsehood to his content. He is making music that is downhome and for the average, regular guy, that even dopeboys, so called gangstas can relate to. He responds to Control in his own mindset. He is a worthy MC. I don’t see the hate behind this project cause there isn’t a mediocre song on this project it’s a straight listen: Start To Finish! A-

    16. Put simply, this is J. Cole’s best album. It’s 4.5/5 stars, but unlike some albums that start of 4.5/5 stars and get better with time. This assuredly will not.

Put a “Poetic Justice” and a “m.A.A.d City” or a “Take Care” and a “The Motto” and this may be an all-time great album.

Not because having a great track for the females that the guys will listen to and a “banger” gives you a great album, only because it gives the album arcs. It breaks up the album enough that you remember the entire thing.

Unfortunately, over time, no one will remember the songs in the middle of this album simply because there’s nothing to draw them to those songs. Everything starts to run together and really, unless you listen to the album from beginning to end, you don’t have a reason to just pick a track in the middle.

That said, this by far is the best Cole we’ve gotten since FNL. It just needs a couple of songs that unanimously get everyone excited in the club or at a concert. Instead, you could ask 10 different people their favorite song and get 10 different answers. Which is cool — but it’s not conducive for longevity.

In the end, I’m just glad he’s found his sound and his lane. This feels like the beginning for Cole, not the end. If his next album is this plus a couple features – even R&B features like the 90s. Maybe one upbeat (not dumb down 2 Chainz, but m.A.A.d City type upbeat) track. And he’s got all 5 stars.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t take 2 years to get it. He needs to release more music!

    17. Great album pure . 13 J.cole’s own songs without featuring that’s what I like the most not like all these latest albums containing 70% of other rappers and 30% of the albums owner . the songs that I prefer more then the others (I’m not saying that I hate any of the songs XD) are ” 28th January “,” Wet dreamz “,”Fire Squad”,”G.O.M.D”, “No role modelz” and “Love Yourz” .

      1. AGREE!!! There needs to be a .5 in between numbers… In saying that so many DX albums get 4 stars and they suck big time.

    18. This isn’t a pure classic like GKMC was but it’s better than NWTS its in between those two albums which is really a good spot

    19. This is the album where he sounds the most comfortable. While Born sinner was not a bad album, I feel that album was made more for his fans in mind, or to possible prove himself as a lyricist. Cole made this album for himself, seemingly not caring what people thought (dude sings more than ever on this album) which is why it is his best album yet.
Also the 3rd verse on Jan 28th is one of my favorite I’ve heard in awhile. gave me chills first time i heard it.

    20. #ColeWorld
indeed, he stuck to his roots indeed on this album that is a owe to the mixtapes that be soooo HONEST in its integrity for exploration… this is indeed the Cole we as fans come to luv and appreciate #OurgenerationalNas

    21. if GKMC is a classic, then what are College Dropout and 2001? You can’t rank GKMC in the same breath as those type of albums.

As far as J Cole is concerned, I thought the album was kind of boring. I like sampling and this type of sound, but there weren’t enough upbeat songs. People need to stop being brainwashed. you’ve really really lowered your standards. These albums today don’t stack up anywhere near a lot of the past albums we called great albums. Like really you’re going to tell me this is comparable to the outcast albums, kanyes, old novas, 2001, doggystyle, etc., etc. Nope. todays rap music is really bad

      1. Hip hop changes, you can look at College Dropout and say its shit compared to All Eyez On Me or Ready To Die, Lifestylez Ov the poor and dangerous. GKMC is a classic even more so now, when you’ve got Lil Thug and shit pouring out music that is plastered everywhere.

      2. No Jerry no I wouldn’t put Forest Hills Drive in that category with the past albums that u call great classics it’s just MAN u and alot of other people up here rating this album are setting your standards WAY to high so high that u can’t appreciate great music when u hear it I mean come on I know u listened to Pac, Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Dmx, Common etc. they all had alots of up beat sounds but they had many laid back smooth rap songs to so how can u say Forest Hills Drive was boring man u can’t tell me u didn’t enjoy some songs from the album like Fire Squad, G.o.m.d, Tale of 2 citiez, and Wet Dreamz that track had that old school type rap beat to it really u could bump those songs in the car and at the club to be honest wit u man this is a classic j.cole album this is what we expected from him more on the lines of his mixtapes u would have to agree this SHITS on his first two albums u maybe need to just relisten to it again and let it soak in the album is still fresh to many despite the leak so u may just have to hear it a few more times to get the vibe trust me this is Cole’s best work since his mixtapes he really stepped up so this should be given the honor of being called a classic for the new school generation of hip hop hands down

    22. I was pretty upset with this album, i think Cole choruses on all his songs are mediocre for the most part his flow and delivery is amazing but songs are mediocre, i also would have love to hear features from some of the best artist out their like Kendrick, D’Allan Rixxx, Ab soul,

    23. Let’s get one thing clear – J. Cole is my favorite artist and I was counting the days til Forest Hills Drive was released….Unfortunately (and with great regret), I was very disappointed overall with the album. I’m all for artists trying new things BUT this is so far left (and on occasion right) from his previous two albums that garnered a mass J. Cole following for a reason! His own unique formula of thought provoking lyrics and down-right catchy (and addictive) beats in his previous two albums made for a real shock that he would deviate soo far from the type of music which garnered a mass response because ultimately listeners enjoyed what they were hearing. I feel like a cheating wife typing this review because I’ve always rooted for J. Cole, but I can’t help asking – “What (the hell) happened Cole??” 2/5

      1. Anon – on the contrary -calling someone’s honest opinion (which note -was also apologetic) ‘troll’-like makes YOU the troll, twat.

      2. Fuck you P.B sit your little dumbass down somewhere u sound like a cry baby girl how u going to listen to this album and be so disappointed at all he put into it lyrics, heart, aggressiveness as an mc, pain, determination, vocals, and over all inspirational vibe u lost your mind P.B u are not a true j.cole fan at all your honesty opinion MAN please u don’t know good music when u hear it that’s why I hate some of these j.cole fans the ones that are bipolar one day they love j.cole his music is the best next day his music is terrible well FUCK U P.B AND ANYONE ELSE WHO BETRAYS a true talented rap artist like J.cole we don’t need those type of people supporting j.cole they aren’t loyal fans they just wanting for J.cole to make music that they don’t find appealing then they turn on cole it’s not about your opinions it’s good u have them u know what u like but at the same time some of yall are just fake as shit some one track mind only like one type of style of hip hop that u don’t leave room to like other styles of hip hop, hip hop styles with inspirational soulful singing that talk about loving your life and being in touch with GOD which Forest Hills Drive had learn to open your minds to music like that and what some y’all disappointed over j.cole doing some songs with sing really MAN some of u don’t got any taste in music at all but yet drake can have singing track in his rap album and it’s the must appealing album ever right see some of u bipolar as the Incredible hulk u have no idea what u like in hip hop music u have variety, or respect and nothing satisfies u I often ask why do some of u listen to hip hop at all especially j.cole for crying out loud man cut the dude some slack and give more credit for a change I mean this guy has stepped his game up going back to his roots and buying back his mom’s house decade after it was foreclosed if that ain’t real then what is, Cole is one of the realiest in the game right now cole don’t need gimmicks to be one the greats and he talks REAL life shit and shit we can relate to in your own lives in his music whether it sounds boring or average lyrically we should be able to enjoy some of his current sings right but oh I forgot some of u are slow and don’t have the diversity to even like j.Cole’s music so really if some u wanna give your honest true opinions of j.Cole’s Forest Hills Drive then u should let your actions speak for u by not purchasing, or support the album when it drops tomorrow so we can separate the phony fake trolls LIKE YOU P.B that call themselves DIEHARD j.cole fans from the ride or die loyal appreciative true j.cole fans that don’t ask for much but to hear good music from j.cole that they can relate and vibe to that’s a true honest opinion doing something to effect it rather than talk and debate about it SHIT nothing happened to J.cole he is still himself with improved rap skills that get better every album in drops this one is definitely his best work since the mixtapes warm up and fnl I give Forest hills a perfect 5 Get your head out of your ass P.B and stop always wanting just one direction of music in j.Cole’s music if u knew how to relate to it u would enjoy this album like it was the best album j.cole made but your to simple minded, ungrateful, butt hurt with no pleasure in music to relate to this near classic dope album thats why your a troll all negative with no positive thought to J.Cole’s music get a life man

    24. “Its narrative, the tropes, and the strategies are completely overcome by the albums terrifying integrity”

this review is fucking retarted. It’s a j cole album with a couple good tracks not a New York Times best seller

    25. I’m not a J. Cole fanatic but I do enjoy his stuff (loved Friday Night Lights & Cole World but Born Sinner to me was dull). I have to say I am totally impressed, to me this is the best Hip Hop album of the year (though Kendrick may have something to say about that if he drops his album). This to me is by far his best album – The beats (so much old school NY influence in them), the lyrical content (love the personal nature of them), his delivery (he sure has taken in influences from Drake, Kendrick, and Nas) to his singing (he definitely sings better than Drake, listen to him on “Apparently” and tell me it ain’t so). this is a total package. Is it a classic? too many people call all sorts of albums classics, I won’t say that cause I would need to be still listening to it and discovering things in 1 or 2 yrs… but album of the year certainly. I would give it a 4.5 if I could so it gets a 5.

      1. PS: Love the fact there are no guest artists. People like Kendrick, Nas, Drake don’t need guest rappers… though I don’t mind guest singers where appropriate. Great rappers don’t need lesser rappers bringing them down.

    26. Cole’s most cohesive project to date. Yes, that includes The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights.

He’s singing so heavily on the second half of the album because he feels so free and happy that he realized the Hollywood lifestyle is bullshit. I can’t help but to be proud of Cole’s happiness. Love Yourz is the icing on the cake. Beautiful album.

    27. I never had a album express how I feel and what I wanna say,and but my life all in one…. Best album of the year hands down

    28. All of you who are saying this album is corny or slow are just plain ridiculous. What do you want 13 straight bangers? This is an album. A complete body of work. Something here for everyone. This something Tupac and Nas played to man. This is something Kendrick is doing right. You’ve got classic Cole in the Wet Dreamz track. And if you’re still a virgin then I’d see how you would call that track corny. Tf outta here. The bangers you guys want are here as well. Fire Squad is a monster of a song. His own version of Control in a way but instead of call artist out by name he calls out all of the rap community. I could go on and on and on AND ON but I won’t. The least I’ll give this RIGHT NOW is 4.5/5. Has the potential to become a classic. Right now it’s best of the year for sure.

    29. Only 4/5? GTFO you coward…. This is an artistic statement from top to bottom bitch. And I’m not even a Cole Stan at all. I hated his first two albums. I just know when I hear something special. This album moved me enough for me to buy it which is a rare occurance. 5/5 stars easy. At least 4.5…. I hate weak ass reviewers who are scared to give great albums props. You knew this shit wasn’t a 4/5 when you heard it. Bitch ass… Same niggas give GKMC 4.5 like it ain’t a easy 5/5. Back in the 90s hip-hop editors were giving 5 star reviews left and right. Now niggas wanna act like new niggas are falling short when really it’s yall bitch niggas who lack taste who fall short.

Have an opinion that makes a fucking difference. Either it’s wack, good, great, or classic all the way through. Scary ass niggas…

Classic album folks. Tell your friends. Peace and love motherfuckers.

    30. Over the last 4 days I’ve accumulated over 28 listens to this album, front to back. For some odd reason I just haven’t been able to listen to anything else and am having a hard time attempting to shake the allure. This is what his debut album should have been

    31. Honestly felt like his most complete album. Really shows the commercial aspect of a feature because this was perfect with no other big names to help

    32. best 2014 album yet / woow cole

beats are absolutely crazy … lyrics are so true.. and deep at same time its a str8 hip hop album that has been missing

    33. 4.5 for sure, brutally honest, relatable, has a dope melody, Cole at his finest.. If anything it just lacks that little bit extra that would make it a classic!

    34. So ShadyXV on this level, huh? This album should’ve received a 4.5 the same way Logic and Krit received a 4.5 (fan of them two BTW). It’s always something with you guys; first he’s going “commercial”; then he’s boring you to death; what happened this time? This is the best hip-hop album to drop since GKMC, period. This 2014 Forest Hills Drive even topped Friday Night Lights (FNL is a classic BTW). Y’all just don’t get it, man. Put this in the conversation with GREAT albums; well deserved.

    35. Just a beautiful display of artistry. Doing what makes him comfortable, what feels right to him. Hip-Hop from the soul. Just a great effort, overall. Not perfect, but damn near close. 4.5 stars! Cole figured it out!

    36. Fuck Yall man… Yall are a fucking Hiphop site….. I expect the white folks to get it wrong but Ya’ll should know quality when you hear it… This review straight up disrespected this mans craft… When the last time you seen a user score for a commercial rapper over 4.5??? Yall are missing opprotunities to bring recognition to this new generation’s greatness… I care because I’m passionate about the craft… Just like a sports fan is pasionate about sports. If you’re writing reviews for a living you’re weak ass should be passionate about this shit too. And wtf was that Kendrick/Drake comparison about? Shit is way off dog… Trust, I can smell a stolen flow from a block away and I know their rhyme schemes like the back of my hand. Nothing Cole did on this album sounds anything like them or anything like everything else for that matter… Man… I swear I wish I could meet you so I could curse you out in person lol. One of the laziest reviews I’ve ever read of one of the best albums from this generation of rap I’ve ever heard. It’s a damn shame yo…. Why does this and Shady XV have the same score???? Why????????? Smh Yall lame as fuuuuuuuuckkkkkkk….. wtfffffff Yall are sooooo lameeeee

      1. I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU MAN. SAD THING IS, BEFORE TODAY, I JUST KNEW THAT HHDX WAS GOING TO GIVE THIS ALBUM A CLASSIC RATING AND I WAS VARY DISSAPOINTED TO SEE THEY ONLY GAVE IT A 4/5. THIS SHIT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A NO BRAINER. THIS ALBUM IS J.COLE’S IILMATIC. ONE OF THE BEST HIP HOP ALBUMS EVER. IT WILL BE CONSIDERED CLASSIC WITHIN THE NEXT TEN YEARS.

    37. This is music. This is what we’ve been waiting on. Not some niggas barely speaking English language singing in skirts and not making sense. This is a classic album. It feeds the soul and gives you hope there’s still real MC’s out there. Like J cole said. There is no crown anymore. The few artist we have left have to come back and kill the game. TOGETHER! And shit if my momma love J cole he gotta be talented. Thank you Jermaine.

    38. Target group of some songs = 10-15 year olds. Real grwon rap heads rather listen to Prhyme or Run the Jewels these weeks. But overall concept and production is solid.

      1. Run the Jewels is overproduced, gimmicky, jibber jabber. Critics eat up that experimental hip hop. They (El-P and Killer Mike) don’t really impact the culture of hip hop much. They talk about issues and hype things up but don’t make an impact. Old white dudes think they’re edgy but they’re not. J. Cole’s emotion and passion actually impacts fans.

      2. It’s a reminiscent project from when he was growing up in North Carolina. Joint reminds me of when I was a teen and I’m 28. Run the Jewels and Prhyme are dope but are a different type of Hip Hop. Can’t be compared.

    39. Easily the best album this man has released.. No radio singles or no press really. Cole World strikes again

    40. Album is what other rappers should aspire to put out. It’s a solid album with no feats and two really good samples. J. Cole stays consistent. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

    41. I do not know what you people expect from J. Cole again. They just can’t please you. He cannot tell his FULL life story on an album go on Wikipedia if you’re that interested. It’s music not an autobiography.

    42. Anybody who aint feeling this album is probably only hating cause it aint their regular get money fuck bitches kind of music.

      1. Cole is corny to me. Everyone song he has to throw in about fucking a bad bitch or getting off his nuts. The shit is repetitive and annoying. Same thing with his first album

    43. Fire. 4.6/5.0
I will say that I think Paul Wall’s new album is a better album at its core.
I will also say this: I am kidding, that shit garbage lmao!
Cole is on top once again.
      Hi

    44. Best album I have heard in A LONG time. It’s so underrated. People don’t realize how golden this album is. It’s a classic. Pretty much every verse is deep and lyrically good. I give it a 5/5.

    45. album is a classic only reason i could see why a person wouldn’t like it is because they rather here something with no meaning behind it.

    46. This album lacks nothing and skillfully embodies everything that is good about hip-hop music–the ultimate hip-hop album.

    47. 5/5 The feel you get from listening to this album is amazing. It makes you reflect on your own life and question whether or not you’ve been brainwashed. Are you losing your soul as your chase your dreams? Did you forget about the important things in life. The things that actually matter? REAL LOVE. Cole World. Classic Album. Congrats.

    48. Beautiful Album. Just finished listening to it. It is amazing and so true in almost all aspects. I live in Mo. Near Stl His story is so relatable his roots give him true soul.

    49. Coming from a day 1 J. Cole fan and STAN, this is by far J. Cole’s best and most complete project of the year. Being 2014 and not having many amazing hiphop albums, with pop and other genres dominating, 2014 FHD could easily be the best hiphop project of the year if not the best ALBUM of the year! Please check it out if you are a true HIPHOP follower, not that radio shit. This is about the music, no singles, no radio hits, just the real soulful music and thats what it’s all about!

    50. Fucking awesome album.. And fuck this reviewer and his long ass words lol. Wet dreamz tho, not only a dope ass song, but funny as fuck!!

    51. This album is the most soothing introspective look into the life of a man, not a celeb, not a famous person, not a rapper, just a man. This shit gon last forever J. Cole. Forever in the pantheons of insightful wonderful Hip Hop music. I appreciate your grind brother…keep ya head up. I believe!

      1. yo i agree, i hate this fucking J cole Fool but this album is a great fucking effort and project, classic? compared to his catalog then yes, it IS the closest thing to becoming a CLASSIc album j cole put out. but COCAINE PINATa TAKES THE CAKE g

      1. It’s always the same thing with J. Cole’s beats… No energy, just like his flow. Damn shame, since he’s a good lyricist.

    52. #ALBUM OF THE YEAR…2014 WAS GOING TO END WITH DRAKE HAVING THA BEST ALBUM N THA GUY WHO BASICALLY GT THA SUMMER & THA YEAR.I DIDNT SAY IT KANYE SAID THT RE:DRAKE…BT EITHER THIS OR BAS: LAST WINTER GT ALBUM OF THA YR. #DREAMVILLE. N BEATS OR ALL CRAE! JST IMAGINE ANOTHER RAPPER N THEM N U’LL C.

    53. Love J Cole I’m sick of the Drug dealer hustler I can’t relate to or look up too. Cole is just stupid with the lyrics.

    54. Real cool album. Apparently is my favorite song on the album then in no particular order, Hello – GOMD – A Tale of 2 Citiez – Wet Dreamz – Fire Squad – No Role Modelz & ’03 Adolescence.
      4 outta 5

      1. J.coles album fucking sucks, it’s worst then the last which was worst then the last. bring that friday night lights “farewell” “before i’m gone” j.cole – blank bored stare the entire time listening to this album.

removed my headphones and threw them down, was so pissed after listening to this, expected so much more. the BEATS SUCCKKK YO. audio valium. cringeworthy singing, laziest hooks, lamest rhymes and patterns, his doing his best eminem , shouting loud and showing us how angry he is with nothing to say. abc rhyme patterns just rhyming the end of every sentence —–cat, —–hat, ——-sat.

then his like oh fuck people arguing over who’s the king everyones the king, that doesn’t matter. then the net track his like fuck you i’m the king of this. then white people snatched the sound. does he know him and drake are half white with with white mothers who raised them…white? smh.

The Warm up and friday night lights are the only projects you need from this guy. he just seems pissed his realised his nowhere near the caliber of talent required to take the throne (nowhere even close to drake or kendricks talent and they in turn are nowhere close to the talent of the 90s cats like nas, big pun, jay, pac, eminem, raekwon, andree 3000 in their prime – not even close) so now it’s fuck the throne fuck being the best. well better to hate what you can’t have cole. this guy is a hypocrite he seems more interested in being the best then making the best records or best rhymes – his trying to be personal like kendricks good kid mad city but he was a better rapper when he told other peoples stories and connected himself to them. friday night lights is what this album is trying to be but check out friday night lights check out – farewell and you you’ll find that there isn’t one song on this new album that captures him reminiscing as well, as interesting, on as dope a beat with as dope a flow. farewell, before i’m gone, 2 face, the autograph, head buss, rise above, see world, all these songs from his mix tapes shit all over anything on this album. the worst song on friday night lights would be the best song on this album. get this guy off the stage his not even a contender anymore. memphis bleak 2.0.

        do better.

and people will praise his mediocrity like Ellsworth Thoohey in the Fountianhead. Knedrick/ Drake = Howard Roark J.Cole – Peter Keating 0 hot gargabe soups

    55. 5. This album is so dope. I’ve listened to it non-stop for a few days now.

I’m surprised the reviewer wasn’t impressed with Wet Dreamz. The ending might have been predictable, but the emotion on that repetitive hook was unreal. Plus the connection it has with Lights Please (arguably my favorite Cole track) is uncanny and so real.

Only song I couldn’t dig was Hello, but I need to give it more listens.

      In order of favorite tracks:
      Wet Dreamz
      03′ Adolescence
      A Tale of 2 Citiez
      GOMD
      Fire Squad
      No Role Modelz
      January 28th
      Apparently
      Love Yourz
      Intro
      St. Tropez
      Note to Self
      Hello

Literally only 1 questionable track on this album. I usually say if 8 out of 14 tracks are really memorable and stand out, the album is a classic. This is a classic JCole album. Best album he has put out as a whole (mixtapes excluded).

    56. born sinner and sidleine story were gud but Forest hills drive is definitely a classic album and i dont say that so easily im telling you mark my words this will be remembered, he prides himself on his past vulnerability and flips it and has that amazing knack to make that music relate to us all, if you dont like it thats respectful we all have our tastes but please give me a plausible reason on why you dont like the album not some corny sad explanation on why he dont compare to Kdot or drizzy fake due to that i can never take your review seriously. It becomes clear to me that you dont like cole and never listened to his past and current work, you only gave it a listen due to the fact that everyone else is doing it and hatred wont allow you to accept the fact that he popping, that very reason die hard fans and the haters of particular other artists will never have a clear view of a album. I love Kdot he is simply amazing however i dont like drizzy fake as a person but you cannot deny that he raps hard and has dope versatility so i say all this to say give other artists their just does dont start hating for no reason. Peace and love bang this album people and be well

      1. Man I swear I couldn’t have said it better, I can’t possibly understand how any one can say this album is trash, no other explanation then pure hatred. I personally think Cole has solidified his position as one of the greatest with this album

    57. j. cole is awesome, im very satisfied with his album. he speaks on the struggle no just money, drugs, and women like other artists, I give the album 5 out of 5 stars.

    58. A beautiful piece of art, never a dull moment, nothing ever feels forced. I’very listened to his entire discography which is admittedly sometimes generic, but this feels like it’s what all his previous work has been leading up to. Absolutely rap album of the year, I’m glad B4.DA.$$ is coming out next year so I can safely say that.

    59. 4.5
Awesome album, but I think he channeling a bit too much drake-esque singing style. Still a fucking great album no diggity. Production is great as well

      1. I wish people would stop saying “Drake`s” singing style. So many other rappers have sung their own hooks before Drake.. anyway this is good album. I love the beats and topics j cole raps about, he did a good job putting it together. Kind of reminded me of his mixtapes, which is the reason i like hime so much in the first place. I cant take this album out of my car.

    60. Amazing album! Cole pushed the envelope and dared to be transparent in a very personal way. He not only told us more about him, but he showed us his background. Furthermore, the instrumentation was mind blowing! I will definitely road trip with this one.

    61. album was crazy good 03 adolescences best song followed by love yourz no role modelz apparently wet dreamz but i love every song on there

    62. Cole went in on every track. Its good to hear rappers talk about real shit that I can relate to. Personally, Top 5 tracks are Love Yourz, No Role Modelz, Wet Dreamz, January 28th, and 03′ Adolescene.

    63. Sorry but this CD sucks. I must be the only one that think this dude boring as fuck. I tried to give it a chance but his production sucks every song sounds the same. Need to stop wasting your best work on mixtape

      1. This wasnt a mixtape. Its an album. 2nd Cole is a great lyricist who doesnt have to rap about the trap or selling drugs. It real shit people deal with. most people who listen to hardcore rap havent lived that life one bit. Is he boring because you are not able to understand what he is saying.

      2. Nope he’s boring cause he’s fucking boring point blank nothing to do with his lyrics cause I actually do think he got skills but he need to change it up with his production everybody think Idon’t like him because he not rappin about the trap and shit but I listen to all music from common to nas if shit wack it’s wack g

    64. OMG This album is so awesome! #PartyRock (swag swag swag) but fa rella, this album saved my marriage. J. Cole is like a mix between 2 legends if they had a child. 2 legends like Ja Rule and Iggy Iggz. This album dope, but not quite as good as anything Ja Rule made though.

    65. I like the review, the only thing that bothers me is the whole “channeling other emcees bit.” This is the most authentic body of work J. Cole has released, he isn’t channeling anyone but himself. The boy Jermaine was doing that whole multi-verse thing you attribute to Kendrick before Kendrick was popping on songs like Lost Ones and that was inspired by rappers from way back when. How on earth can you attribute sung hooks to Drake, really, it’s almost as ridiculous as when Drake claimed he was the first person to successfully sing and rap.

    66. I haven’t seen so many people on DX agree on a album in a long time… How is this not a classic? Litterally everybody I know that listened to it has been utterly blown away… Critics used to reflect the views of the fans… Now they’re just overly critical, biased, music Nazi’s who hurt the legacy of great albums more than help. It’s sad what’s happened to writers in hip-hop media… It’s not how it was in the days of The Source and XXL… These guys aren’t fans anymore… They’re haters. They like one or two underground rappers and they hate on everything else. As talented as the brother is Cole will never get 5 stars in this climate. Same goes for Drake. Even Kendrick. Even when an artist gives everything he’s got and the people respond with praise and admiration it’s still not enough for these stuck up clowns. When Jay, Big, Nas, Em, etc were at the top of their games critics gave credit where it was due. Now it seems like these tasteless idiots have no respect for the leaders of the new school. They’ve been waiting for 10 years for some magical album that somehow fits they’re criteria for a classic and it’ll never come. While they’re lost in lala land we’ll still be riding out to MBDTF, GKMC, and 2014FHD to name a few. In short, fuck these niggas.

      1. Please what is a classic if you don’t know I’ll tell you since I think you really don’t know a classic is a album you can pick up 10 years from now and just as relevant and refreshing for example Illmatic just as good today and that’s over 20yo my prediction you won’t be looking for this CD 5 months from now just like nobody looking for born sinner now’s

    67. You have to be a fuck nigga if you think anything about “No Role Modelz” is “awkward”. That’s one of the realest songs on the album… Where do you find these faggots Dx? Worst review of all time…

    68. HHDX: “Everybody who ever sang ever is channeling Drake….”
The fuck is wrong with you clowns?
ima drake fan btw, but ya’ll are tripping

      1. I can – easily! PRhyme, Cadillactica, Run The Jewels 2, Heavy Lies The Crown, Next To Nothing, There Is Only Now, The Last Demon, Barrel Brothers, The Turning Point, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Also the Strange Journey Volume 3 is better.

FHD was the only album you heard this year? I know it’s better than Chemically Imbalanced, Cocaine Pinata and on par with Under Pressure.

      2. PRhyme, Blasphemy, 13 Reloaded, The Infamous Mobb Deep, 36 Seasons, Street Certified, Young Rollin’ Stonerz, Cadillactica, NehruvianDOOM, There is Only Now, PTSD, Mega Philosophy…

    69. Yo, this is unreal gives me faith in motherfucking hip hop these days! Cole is the realest and this right here proves it. Makes me reconsider my career and cry a little bit…but anyways he is the next Nas obviously.

      1. Keep crying nigga you better not try to come back! I’ll be waiting! The next Nas? The nigga gonna get a Kelis tattoo LMFAO. Ja Rule stay in hiding nigga I’m in the studio right now! GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGUNIT!!!

    70. Question for the hip hop heads? So does this album make JCole the guy Jay Z was talking about when he said someone was somewhere eating a bowl a cereal coming for his spot? And that he was going to sign him and he didn’t want no problems? Is JCole that nigga now?

      1. Drake too he just puts it all out there and doesn’t care about being called “soft” Realness will always sell. When they start rapping about bricks and guns there careers are over

    71. lets get one thing clear here in reviewing a rap album. Jcole and Drake make good music without a doubt but not a great rap album. They miss the essential ingredient that makes a great rap album. This album has 95% singing by the rapper and people still categorize it has a rap album. Let me take you guys back to the classic rap albums..Ready to die by Notorious Big ,Illmatic by Nas, Blueprint by Jigga etc. Those albums are classic because the artist gave us the listeners his craft which is to Rap. Jcole should have giving those songs to chris brown or trey cos they are so RnB. If Friday Night Lights was like this it would have been a distant memory. My 2 cents in conclusion is that this is below par from what i expected from the jcole that did the come up and friday night lights mixtapes.

      1. You took the easy route everyone knows those albums are classic. I’ll Throw out a few more All Eyes On Me 2PAC, Coming out hard 8ball and MJG, The Documentary(YESISAIDIT)The Game, Thug Motivation 101 Young Jeezy, The Diary Scarface, The Marshall Matthers LP. Emminem, Death Certificate, Ice Cube, Reasonable Doubt JayZ, 500 degrees Juvenile(lol),Niggaz4Life NWA, Me Against the world 2Pac, Stillmatic Nas. I cant speak on the Rakims, KRS ONE’s, and Big Daddy Kanes basically the 80’s era I was too young.

      2. The most important ingredient to a good rap album is the rapping itself and Drake & J Cole are both really good. JCole just needed more time he only had 2 albums B4 this but this is a really good album. “Take Care” from drake was a great album he won a grammy for that. Not that that means much but it does mean something. His “So Far Gone ” mixtape some say is a classic. I didn’t think GKMC was a classic just a great album but time may prove me wrong. Back to JCole I think you’re being too hard on the album. IMO it takes longer than a week to really tell how good an album is. I think everyone calling it classic on the day it came out has to be under 25 however it is a good album his best one to date. When it comes to him “singing” I think part of it is growth and the other apart is him appealing the fans. Most want to hear their favorite MC doing more than just rapping times have changed. If you go back and listen to Jcole’s “No Role Models” he has a line where he says ” But then I thought back, back to a better me Before I was a B-list celebrity, Before I started calling bitches “bitches” so heavily. Back when you could get a platinum plaque without no melody, You wasn’t sweatin me. And the hook “Don’t save her! She don’t want to be saved” That comes from a Southern hip hop classic from Project Pat and Three Six Mafia there is nothing R&B about that hook. Don’t forget J Cole is from the south where niggaz sung to pass time and keep there minds off getting cracked in the back with whips from the “Massa”. Its in his roots to sing and harmonize if that’s what he wants to do. And to quote the great Andre 3000 “The South Got Something To Say” R.I.P. Pimp C

    76. I’m not too sure I agree with the idea that Wet Dreamz is a weak track. I actually thought that was an extremely relatable fact which was produced very well and had a catchy hook. Maybe it only slightly tied in with the overiding concept of the album but as a standalone track I thought it was impressive. Any opinions?

    77. NEW MC EIHT ALBUM COVER FOR WHICH WAY IZ WEST ON EIHT’S TWITTER PAGE WITH DJ PREMIER AND BRENK SINATRA .

    78. dope album…. not surprise, JCole always makes good music. i was just surprised he dropped it without having a single out. oh well. good move.

    79. This album on point, lyrical, spiritual and intellectual. The tracklisting is well mastered coz it takes you on a trip, not just a haphazard mishmash. Well produced beats and bomb ass lyrics, the message is clear and delivery is excellent. 5 stars is an understatement in my books…But then again since its the maximum i will have to settle for it.

    80. Very good album. He keeps getting better and better. Will have to change his style up to keep up with Kendrick and Drake. But he is clearly top 3 among the new age of rap players.

    81. REEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL HIP HOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111
