Dr. Dre – Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre

Dr. Dre – Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre

Days after King Kendrick Lamar released To Pimp A Butterfly, HipHopDX Editor-In-Chief Justin Hunte called the album “ambitious in its attempt to inspire a generation to change the world for the better and poignant enough to actually do so.” Ladies and gentlemen, behold “Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre,” a Homeric West Coast narrative from K.Dot’s ideological benefactor. Dre balances a tightrope of contrasting dualities with true unapologetic mastery or life of opulence despite current racial tensions focused primarily on the poor and doing what he can to articulate those uneasy truths. Hell, at age 50, Andre Young has spent significant time living the extremes of both. Regardless of his status as Hip Hop’s first almost billionaire, Dre is just as antagonistic as ever. Those ideas exist both thematically and sonically throughout the entire 62 minute runtime. Like TPAB, Compton is a personal testimonial of personal responsibility exceeding overwhelming odds. This time, instead of making freshly discovered values a centered focal point, D.R.E.’s 16-year-in-the-making masterpiece displays the fruits they eventually bring as time moves forward.

For quite some time, D.R.E. mentioned his cinematic aspirations for a mythological project once called Detox. From the title alone, CPT’s golden child yearned to creatively ascend past the raw young hedonism present on landmark offerings The Chronic and 2001. The struggle was evident through various leaks, alongside two singles in-between, that commercially succeed but failed to build substantial buzz. Finding inspiration from N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, a story organically connected to (alongside several songs being featured in the film), he’s found clarity in where the past and present fuel each other. All this while embracing his inner Scorsese. Each of Compton’s 16 tracks feel like individual set pieces bound together perfectly. From an intro detailing the area’s dark and racially based history to the credits closer “Talking To My Diary,” there’s indestructible structure. Most importantly, the music reflects various dynamics of emotions.

Playing director, Dre ensures the right co-stars and cameos serve the ultimate purpose; articulating his vision through characters appearing only when necessary. “Talk About It” featuring buzzing emcees King Mez  and Justus speak aspirations as hell burns around them, something the Aftermath head gets better than anyone. Having DJ Dahi co-produce gives a contemporary trap bounce that thankfully doesn’t repeat itself again throughout the project. By the time “Talk About It” hits its final note, the energy doesn’t let up as he ups the guest profile. There isn’t a better example than follow-up track “Genocide” featuring Kendrick Lamar, Marsha Ambrosius and newcomer Candice Pillay. West Coast OGs including Ice Cube, Xzibit and Snoop Dogg get some screen time as well. That doesn’t even count guest appearances from Eminem to Jill Scott. Simply put, Compton’s ensemble cast oozes top notch.

Be clear though, this is Dre’s show. He challenges me-too Hip Hop trends without sounding like a grumpy-old-man on “Satisfiction,” uses audio from Jimmy Iovine to stress the importance of hard work through “All In A Day’s Work,” and the explains the pressures of being on top on “Deep Water.” While previous works provided subtle social commentary on race in America, there are enough moments like “Animals” featuring Anderson .Paak which features guest production from another iconic producer DJ Premier. Those looking for good braggadocios rhymes for the sake of them are in luck the “İnce İnce Bir Kar Yağar” sampled “Issues” and “For The Love of Money,” a track including one of several interesting Eazy-E references.

Despite watching music change so rapidly over the decades, Dre still has an acute ear for sound; reflecting heavily in Compton’s production more influence by Maggot Brain era Funkadelic than Mothership Connection P-Funk sonics. The traces of G-Funk fit snugly with live instrumentation, digital wizardry, nostalgic nods and modern Hip Hop. Emotions run the gambit currently without feeling jarring. That’s because real human feelings aren’t always easy to grab ahold of. Dre’s attitude goes between wisdom and ignorance easily. Somewhere in the middle, moments like “It’s All On Me” delivers the most introspective lyrics of Mr. Young’s career. Like any great filmmaker, it’s all in the small details and Compton is full of them; ready to explore after each listen. “I must be doing something right word to my nigga Eazy,” The Doctor says almost like an incantation before the Ruthless Records founder’s voice appears on track four. Compton is Dre’s eye-witness proclamation of his past, present and future wrapped in a slick post-Obama package. Consumed before or after viewing Straight Outta Compton only adds an extra layer of context. Then again, on its own merit, Dr. Dre’s third and final album will become the official beginning for West Coast Hip Hop’s renaissance.

      1. Pretty good album reminds me of his Aftermath
Album he related after he left death row, so I guess his next album will be the one to watch for in 5 years, I think Dre delivers when people think his shit is mediocre, but the first Aftermath complication album was pretty solid

    1. I was at first extremely dissapointed in thsi abum, I then realized you gotta listen to this shit in your whip with the subs on high, and it bumps. Cool ass music. I do wish there were more beats like Talking to my diary, however its overall a sick album. I think everyone was expecting an extension or newer version of the chronic 2001 but this is in its own sounds for sure

      1. I had the complete same perception. Even I was expecting something completely different at first (lowrider beats and all) and was kinda dissapointed at first but after a couple of spins a completely love it.

      2. THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD CAME TO ME IN A DREAM AND SAID THAT HE WOULD RATHER FUCK HIS CAMEL CLYDE IN THE ASS THAN LISTEN TO THIS POOP. HE DECLARED JIHAD AGAINST GAY ASS DRE FOR NOT RELEASING DETOX BUT RELEASING THIS HEAPING PIECE OF DOODY INSTEAD. ALLAH FUCKBAR!!! ALLAH FUCKBAR!!

    2. THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM NO MATTER WHAT ANYBODY HAS TO SAY! Always been a huge Dre fan, the anticipation of the album was unbearable, but the wait is over and the album is here. Great album Dr. Dre 5 Stars. XXXXX

    3. This is what a proper Hip Hop album sounds like. Hard beats, no Alchemist/Madlib or other bullshit “artists” fucking things up. All songs are dope, but the dirty south-beat changes were unnecessary so that means it’s not perfect. It has only dope featuring artists as well, no 2 Chainz or Rick Ross – he knows what real music is. I would love to hear a part 2 to this album. Album of the year, most likely the best album of the next few years.

      4.5/5

      1. So according to you sir, Madvillainy is supposed to be crap ? So is Russian Roulette ?
As The Soul Children and Jesse Jackson would say “Brothers and sisters… I don’t know what this world is coming to ?”…

      2. Yes, Russian Roulette was total crap beat wise and Alchemist used to be one of my favorite producers. His last dope work was with Curren$y . He’s trying to be more like Madlib with his new stuff but its not working out for him at all.

      3. Have you heard Alchemist album with Boldy James “My 1st Chrmistry Set”? You should check that out.

      4. Eastside, I listened to it when I came out. Production-wise I can’t remember a single good song, but James went hard as fuck as long as I remember correctly. Unique delivery and voice, maybe I have to re-listen to it.

    4. Great album. Dre went the unexpected route and didn’t go for 2001 pt.2.

Talking to my Diary is amazing.

    5. like every dre album its going to be a couple years ahead of its time, in 3 years people will be like whaaattt how did it only get 4.5. been pumping this start to finish since it came out

    6. This is why I have Bose in the whip. Shit BUMPS. Not feeling ‘Talk About It’ – shit sounds like Drake – or ‘Deep Water’ – that beat is fucking annoying – but otherwise shit is bangin’.

      4.5/5

      1. I’ve heard a Bose system on a Audi A8, it was okay-ish – not worth the price and didn’t belong on the expensive car. Too much of teenage-ish bass and muffled highs with over-aggressive mids.

      2. Bose is easily the best sound I’ve ever heard. I do agree, Audi’s are not worth the price, though. There ARE controls, usually, that allow the listener to adjust the bass and treble, however, so perhaps that is the issue.

    7. This is the type of album one would repeat soon after the last song.Dre didn’t disappoint dope album

    8. A really weak album. Kendrick was good, but nothing else. No conception, lack of creativity. It really sounds like he was producing it for 15 years, cuz it’s extremely lame. I don’t give a shit if he’s a legend – this album is crap. Don’t call everything a ‘classic’ just because an older dude dropped it.

    9. Even on a fucking Dr. Dre record you need to open with some Kendrick Lamar shit. Hop off his dick for 5 fucking minutes HHDX.

    10. I give it a 5/5, but can’t be mad at this review. This album is a masterpiece and is the best rap/hip hop album in 10 years. This is coming from someone who’s favorite artists are Nas and Eminem, who have both released albums in that time frame. Congrats to Dre, who at 50 just showed every youngin in the game how to make a fire album. I’ve already heard the album front to back(another feat lacking in today’s rap) 20+ times. now i’m sitting at working thinking of ways of sneaking it on my ear buds

    11. i love it and have been listening everyday since it came out.Compton is the perfect soundtrack it paints a perfect picture of what dre and cube are tying to get across with the movie. sonic masterpiece!!

    12. This annoys me. I feel like everyone is saying this is a great album just because its a Dr. Dre album. Lets be honest. This is no where near the chronic or 2001. This album will not stand the test of time like those two. It’s mediocre at best. And I dont know what the muddle vocals are about on some songs. It seemed thrown together last minute for this movie and wasn’t full mixed to dre standards.

      1. Why does it annoy you Bc people like the album? You don’t like the album so never listen to it again and never comment about anything related to this album. Simple! It won’t stand the test of time? Il it’s only been out 3days. We won’t know the answer to that question for another 10yrs but you don’t like it so it should be irrelevant for the rest of your remaining life. It’s just music sir. It wasn’t fully mixed? Yeah Dre last 2 albums wasn’t mixed to his standards either. The same with with Snoop Dogg and Eminems albums.

      2. maybe you need to listen to it in a better system because the mixing and mastering is flawless as every dre record is…smh straight fire!!!!

      3. I agree JP.

By the way I’m sure this won’t be his last album…. he just said so to get everybody buying it and give more promo to the movie`

    13. 5*! This album is over produced (but not in a bad way). Dre is a perfectionist on them boards!! People forget he is not a rapper by trade. But kills it either way.

    14. Have no idea how, but somehow Dre lived up to the hype. Would have liked to see more DRE production on the album, but everything sounds good. No complaints here, will be bumping for years to come…

    15. Where tf is Game? This album compared to Chronic 2001 is a joke. I cant believe Dre didnt make classic westside beats like Still Dre but this radio trash…Getting older doesnt mean getting wiser in this case…Kendrick Lamaar is so fckin overrated…I hope some new young westside rapper comes up and destroys all these fckers cus they sold out

      1. Lmao you stuck in the 90s bruh. Kendrick ‘s a poet and this album is dope as fuck. Dre hasn’t sold out you dumb at if you think that. Fuck outta here with yo criticising ass

      2. Did you even hear the album? Game got one of the dopest tracks on there. He fucking killed that song “Just Another Day”. I always thought he sounded great on Dre beats anyway. But the shit he got on Compton knocks heavy!!! It def isn’t any of the Chronic albums but regardless I think its an incredible album for the time we’re in. I can listen to it from beginning to end and there hasn’t been many Hip Hop albums I can say that about as of late. So either way it’s a win for the culture

    16. This is certainly an above-par album in terms of the music. I’m disappointed with Dre’s occasional rhyme flow that seems heavily influenced by Eminem (what I call angry rap). It’s also hard to listen to a 50 year multimillionaire complain about a hard life, what he did first, and how rough and tumble Compton is, when in reality, the city as it stands today is far from a ghetto for the most part. (What’s the point of being a successful adult when you repetitiously complain and glorify living a hard life? To appease a current young angry generation? Oh well). Overall, the production is on point, although the guest spots seem crowded at times. The Easy E spot is really cool. I wish Ren made the album, and was hoping for a Gin & Juice type of song with Snoop, or Lil Ghetto Boys – a song that explains why people act a certain way, as opposed to the same ‘ole worn-out gangster theme. Granted, this is the 2015 Dre, and to his credit, he delivers a solid album sound-wise for his followers. 3.75/5.

    17. The buzz behind the anticipation of being able to finally stream this album was absolute bringing butterflies to my stomach. As a huge fan of Dr. Dre previous works and the movement of artist that he has brought into Hip-Hop I knew I was in for a treat upon first listen. From the intro I immediately felt Dre capturing that struggle of a poverty stricken habitat.

The great thing about this album is just that, a record that you can play from start to finish while still being able to pick out your favorite tracks that stick in your mind. I felt the honesty and anger behind almost every feature on this album. At first I questioned why everyone sounded angry and for good reason, it was to capture the feeling of the COMPTON environment at this period of time. Many of the songs on here are great and play a dynamic which relates to old heads as well as being able to inform the younger generation of the gritty west coast we once knew.

The production on the album is truly amazing, the SKITS! Oh thank heaven for these great cinematic interludes that compliment so great. It was a pleasure to listen to this entire album twice before writing this review using the Apple Music. Now as far as being a classic it is debatable depending if you are a fan of good music or more into the “NOW” pop singles. I can and will listen to this album a few years down the line. Some of the tracks do speak a message while others paint the dark picture of violence and a prison mentality.

Lot more I can say but this is an essay as it is- This album was made for the love of making music, that should not be questioned in any discussion.

      -Grime Lab

    18. I wasn’t really feeling it at first because of all the expections… 15 years+ is a long time.
So I took the weekend to really listen to the whole thing again and again and now I can say it’s an incredible album. From the production which is ahead of its time and sound so perfect in your audio system or headphone to the content which can sound a bit corny but well it’s Dre after 30years so he has to say what he’s saying on that record.
I won’t throw the word CLASSIC but it’s a great album and it may be referenced as a classic in a few years.

    19. This album isnt on par with 2001 or Chronic. Its an Ok album, nothing special really. I just wish he had more tracks with Cube. No Yella and MC Ren?? Now thats weird.
He couldve also featured Eazy E jr, but he didn’t

    20. I’ve gotta give it a 3.5 or 4. It bangs from front to back, but the lyrics and the vocals sound fucked up on a quite a few tracks. Dre rapping like Kendrick also sounds weird. If Drake appeared on a lot of the vocal tracks, instead of these newbies, this album probably would have been a classic.

    21. To me this album is more of a personal expression and a thesis from a mad scientist than it is an album full of summer jams.
If you take in consideration the intentions behind and the perspective of its author, this is perfection made into an album.

    22. dre barely raps on his own album.rofl
just the last track, thats pretty it.

so bad. album is full of useless features 😀

      1. have you even listed to a Dre album before? his last two were exactly the same, why would you expect something different. Dre is a producer first and rapper second

    23. Deep Water, Genocide, Dark Side, Animals, Talk About It, etc this album bangs so hard. Dope to hear Kendrick over some trap sounding beats after his classic of an album TPAB. 5/5.

    24. It’s a masterpiece if every time you hear it front to back, you have a new favorite track. Amazing production and rapping.

      That Em verse though……… phew…….

    25. Album is a breathe of fresh air! If you are a fan of music, if you are a fan of hip hop you will enjoy this album from start to finish. The production is perfect. The change in tempo and the cuts make you feel the music its almost like you are watching the music video. I will be jamming this for a long time. Definitely worth the wait

      1. 5/5!!! Dope album! New sound, change in flow, dope intro. Perfect! Weren’t feeling it at first,bt listened to it once more and could feel it! People expect a “2001” type of album,bt he surprised us. Talking To My Diary? Love tht. ‘Specially where he pays homage to Easy nd the rest of the NWA. Feelin wht he nd Snoop raps on “Satisfiction”. 4 those who hate this album? Doctor’s Orders: Go Fuck Yourself!

    26. When Dre drops something, it’s a classic. This is no different and time will tell whether it’s the best of the 3. I can’t give fractions on the rating scale, but I’d give it 4.5 stars based off first listen.

    27. Valley of Silicon payed a lot for positive sentiment. haha. Let’s see if ppl will like this piece of shit a year form now

    28. This album is classic and the production and sound match what exactly DRE should sound like in 2016 and still kept it west coast to the fullest… #stilldre

    29. Dr.Dre is Genius I wish I can meet him if only for a second Cube, Ren, Yells N.W.A for life Genie Boy

    30. This album is very average… If you compare this album to Dr. Dre- 2001 then it’s not even close… Songs such as Still D.R.E., What’s the Difference, Forgot About Dre and The Next Episode are on way better than the top 4 tracks on this album.

      1. Well in terms of instant gratification club bangers they are. In terms of musicianship and production not even close. And Compton clearly isn’t going down that 2001 route.

Dre could have easily released a 2001 part two, he could probably have released ten.

      2. This is a soundtrack inspired by the movie ,so why compare it to the chronic?? it stands alone and is damm good…detox is what people were waiting for and dre scrapped it, if he did not like it then it’s okay for me…DRE blessed us with a soundtrack that paints a sonic picture in my mind for the movie..no filler straight fire!!!

    31. trash no drake feature no fux given. This is 2015 not 1999 and this washed up hasbin needs to realize that. Heck most of these hipsters that are stuck in the past also need to realize that. All these bum washed up rappers should just retire to stop emberassing themselves. If they wan’t attention they need to get a drake feature because with out drake they dont matter in hiphop. In 2015 drake runs the rap game period, Instead of having that annoying peice of garbage kendrick dr dre should have put drake on it.

      1. Uh…how does drake run the rap game again. Mothafucka doesn’t even sell out venues and then to top it off he ain’t on par with dudes of the past from the 80’s to even the early 2000’s. I mean if you like moist dumb shit, knock yourself out. However come with some fucking facts and not trends when you want to praise drake or any other sorry ass rappers out right now.

    32. Honest review.
If your a fan of dr see you wont like this album. If your a fan of kendrick Lamar you will like this album. If you miss old school hip hop you will hate this album. If your into that new southern influence and new age hip hop you love this album. I personally do not like this album. Very disappointing. The best track and one of the only good tracks is animal.

      1. That’s exactly the way I felt about this album. Being a long time Dre fan, and expecting to hear his signature production style (90’s G-Funk), I was disappointed. I believe, the older fan base is not gonna like it, while the younger fans are gonna love it.

      2. Actually I’m a fan of Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Old school hip hop and the new southern influence new age hip hop so I guess that means….I LOVE THIS ALBUM!

      3. I have to agree..I purchased 3 tracks which I was feelin but overall this album was a bit overhyped. It just doesn’t hold up when compared to albums such as The Chronic or 2001. Dre is better than this, and this wasn’t a Dre album as much as a collaboration based on him being inspired by the new NWA movie. I’d give album a 3/5

    33. When I heard Dre was putting out an album first thing on my mind was… I am not going to go down that road of expectations ala Chronic or 2001. I knew I was not going to get that, simply because it is years back and the dynamic has changed. The music environment is different now, Dre is older, and it being an album attached to a movie, definitely has a different approach. My first listen and I was like, well this is definitely no 2001 or chronic but I am feeling it. After my firth listen I was completely into the album. I did not skip even one song all the way through. What is more, I think everyone on the mic was on point. Even game (Who I think had one of the best rhymes on the album) was on point, snoop, xhibit, Conner, Kendrick, Em, Cube, everyone contributed some memorable verses. Even Dre stepped his lyrical game up (or ghost writing game). The underlying theme of the album through out was surviving and making it from nothing to something with hard work and dedication. Dre does not need to put out anything and he will still be a legend, so this album must have been made out of the love of music and Compton. I love this album.

Reply value, well cooked production and smooth transitions all the way from start to finish. My only grip with the album is the simple fact that Dre already set the bar so high with his last 2 projects that occasionally I can’t lie that I wish it was some back in the days type young Dre when controversy was key in making his albums. That edgy Dre is missing. Overall 4.5/5. One of the best albums of the year thus far.

      1. Well said. THE EXACT SAME THOUGHTS. SCARY. True Dre fan. Was waiting for that old sound while listening to the album so was slightly disappointed but enjoyed it. Played it a couple of times on repeat at work after that and soacked it in. Very powerful. Does anybody remember the anger from The Chronic album about Rodney King. This whole album is the anger and struggle of Compton from his days til now. Remember everyone. THIS IS A SOUNDTRACK, not an album. Great Job Dre.

    34. Everybody wants radio hits and singles. Albums don’t always deliver that, especially since Dre did say this was a soundtrack not album. I won’t say this is a classic, but i believe this is a perfectly produced album. This Compton LP displays overall talent and his knowledge of musical production. Dre at best is a great producer that knows how to rap, nothing more. He’s thought provoking without the clever similes and quips that make a great MC, a great MC. The LP has soul with no gimmicks, unlike the majority of artist we are forced fed nowadays. The guest MC are almost overmatched by the Dre’s beat selections. If more MC’s master their craft like true musicians do, maybe we would have more debates on weather or not an album dropped in their late 40’s is worth 5 out of 5 mics. The album is an instant banger without the filler.

      1. I respect your opinion. My response is positive. I found the this album a masterpiece. I never been the one to really view or listen to an album based on details of how it was created. Meaning I don’t look at who’s featured(even how many times),who wrote what, should have took this song off,is it a classic or not, etc. I never skimmed or skipped any tracks. I felt it gave me a better overall feel for the album. When talking about classic. Also people need to understand that this is more than just music. It’s a legend giving us music that was inspired by the movie NWA. The movie is relevant to what’s going on today in our communities. This albums was needed for hip hop.

    35. Not surprised by the 4.5 rating… standards are too low for these highly anticipated follow-ups (i.e. Kendrick Lamar). This album is a 3.75, be real and give it a 4, shit didn’t live up to the hype

      1. Mine is Its all on me, talk about it, Issues, talking to my dairy and Animals. My top 5 right there, don’t like medicine man that much but it’s ok. Eminem as usual thinking it’s all about rapping fast that’s the deal. Started off well and then went on with the same rhyme scheme till the verse ended.

    36. Classic. Is it as good as The Chronic or Chronic2001? No. But those are two of the top 10 rap albums ever made. This is a Top 50 rap album induction. I dig it.

      1. I beg to disagree, chronic should make top 10 albums ever made, but 2001? naa there r far too many albums with far greater lyrics for that album to make top 10. It is a solid album without a doubt, but it seems you rating is based only on beats. Beats is just part of it, lyrics and delivery make it complete. This Compton album is good not exceptional, it has five really good songs and may be another two ok songs. The rest am sorry is poor or average, but i don’t begrudge Dre though. This album was clearly rushed cause it is inspired by the NWA movie soon to hit the theaters. Overall a good album but not great or exceptional.

    37. Alchemist is pissing his pants listening to this album. He wishes he can produce phenomenal music like this. Great album, Dre!

    38. Awesome album..top to bottom. relevant music with that dre stamp on it.. next up.. the game and jay rock!!!

    39. How was it wack? Tell me the wack tracks or verses! !! I know the whole thing doesn’t bang but it’s not wack lol!

    40. The funny thing about all you hating ass so called hip hop enthusiasts who say this record is TRASH is that you don’t know SHIT about a Good Damm thing.. I guarantee y’all some French Montana, Future, Chief Keef loving ass hoes listening to that garbage all day because you like to ‘Turn Up’. Giving your opinion like you think you work for The Source and shit! Hahaha Dr. Dre over everyone, still!

      1. Friend, this is part of the e-marketing to increase the sales. In computer science it is called positive sentiment. Unfortunately, what Silicon Valley does is that they allocate budget for people to create fake accounts and comment positively on the album to manipulate the rating metric. If you want to measure the real impact of a work, give it only one year and see if people are going to play it again. Of course they will play The Chronic or 2001 but not this trash! (Remember EM MMLP2 ? or course not, only MMLP)

    41. Hate to ever admit this but….Drakes “If your reading this…” album has better beats, lyrics and relevancy in 2015 then Dr.Dre’s 16 year effort.

Dre retired the beyatches, hoooez and Six Fo’s on this album….he might as well retire him self. This album was garbage.

      1. Learn to spell! It’s not ‘then’, it has always been ‘than’. Your comment is irrelevant now, sorry.

    42. Lucky for the editor, the album is a flop. But the other thing that’s a flop is how the editor wrote a review based on what seems to be 4 tracks he heard on the album. Atleast listen to the entire album a few times before writing a half effort review.

      1. The album is a flop? What drugs are you on? An album that was announced a week before its drop with zero singles or leaks is predicted to do nearly 300K with no physical copies or prior promotion. Numbers that are strong in today’s music market.
        Flop? Get real

      2. Friend, this is part of the e-marketing to increase the sales. In computer science it is called positive sentiment.

    43. Realy kids , You call this albulm trash lol . 4/5 3.5/5 lyrics, 4/5 beats , 4.5 flow , this album is not à classic but it got some westcoast vibe with descent beats.

    44. It is not retro it is not original and it is not gangster, but there are some good songs on this album. the most songs sound like all the other new school hip hop, which i don’t like but these songs are still beter it is still DRE!

      1. Yes, I do. Pretty much Eminems first 3 albums, Get Rich Die Tryin, Illmatic, Stillmatic, Chronic, Chronic 2001, DMX first 3 albums, Jay Z a few of his, etc. a lot in the 90s/early 2000s.

Not many at all in the last 10 years.

      2. i never bought a album and felt like after one listen I grasped everything from the album. To even listen to any album more than one time means you pretty much enjoyed the music.

    45. Overall this is a good album. When the last time anybody listen to a dope soundtrack all the way through. From beginning to end without skipping a track. Please remember this is a soundtrack not a Dre album.

    46. The best track on the album is the one produced by Premier. Dre is pretty overrated as a producer. He wouldn’t even make my top 10. I agree with the commenter below that Drake’s latest album has way better beats and that’s because 40 is an incredible producer.

      Best producers of all-time: 1. Noah “40” Shebib 2. DJ Premier 3. Dilla 4. Alchemist 5. Boi-1da

      1. You’re so stupid.. I agree with ur top 5 except dre belongs at 1 and the rest follow in the same order. Still DRE and in da club are 2 of the best beats ever made

      2. Dilla, and Premi, definitely. ALC is getting there. 40 and 1da still have a ways to go before you can put them in that category.

      3. Keep in mind that a producer and a beat maker are two totally different people. All the producers you names are pretty much beat makers. I would give Premo the respect as an actual producer because he entirely produced all the Gangstarrr albums. Has any of those producers ever put together an album they produced and actually rapped on? None of those mentioned. Has anyone of them ever took an artist to the next level by signing them and overseeing their albums? Nope!! Okay here’s some artist Dre helped take it to the next level. 50cent, Snoop Dogg,Kendrick Lamar, Eminem,Game,Truth Hurts(Gold album),Xzibit,Busta’s Big Bang(gold),and even did the Firm. Don’t confuse your personal preference to say he’s overrated. Just say you not his biggest fan, instead of saying he’s overrated. To many accolades sir.

    47. This album came out on friday and you are just reviewing it on tuesday. you guys need to do a much better job at reviewing albums. youare always days later than evrybody else. Solid album tho. Production is CRAZY!!

      1. I think they wanted to let the album get some rotation and actually listened to it more than once. Also you know people have families to go home to? Some people don’t stand in front of a computer 24hrs a day. Just sayin.

    48. Album is over produced, Dre says the same shit as on 2001, mediocre lyrics, weak features, all the rappers use stupid voices and flows, track 2 sounds like Drake song, One shot sounds like an Eminem song (8mile ost), to much singing etc.

    49. I was somewhat disappointed in the tracklist features so I was somewhat disappointed at first. But I listened to it a few more times and I love it now. He really is a genius… I don’t know about best album in 10 years like some of yall are sayin. Recovery, thank me later, nothing was the same, are all better than this to me but it is still a great album. Especially for a 50 year old. 4.5/5

    50. some of you people kill me with your DRE bashing, ask pretty much any of your favorite producers and they will tell you dr.dre is their favorite or the master. dj premier pretty much told you there is only 1 he considers on the same level and that’s DRE. dre is not just a beatmaker like 80% of the guys today with pro tools..lol…..he brings out the best in any artist he works with and picks the best new talent and puts together the best team to make an album…gtfoh!!! dre stay winning I’ll wait

      1. So because DJ Premier and other producers like Dr Dre then other people must follow what these dudes believe? I’m a huge Dre fan but I disagree strongly with your reasoning. Make your own opinion and back it up with other reasons besides “I’m following what another nigga say about the dude.”

    51. Only song that sounds like a Dr. Dre song on here is Talking To My Diary. I liked when D.O.C and Jay-Z wrote for Dre better than Kendrick writing for him.

    52. expected more and better features, game and em should of had more involvedment, wheres 50 and jay z. just not enough build up nor delivery overall but some of the beats are grade A

    53. Great album, I gave it a 9/10. No weak tracks, no weak verses, no weak anything. Moves the West Coast sound forward, and brought us some MC and producers we might not have heard much from yet. Dre’s ear still as good as ever.

    54. It was a very good album but the replay value is low and not enough actual Dre rapping..I wouldn’t go so far as to call this a Dr. Dre album.

    55. officially done with this site.

the comments, most of which being trolls, still mange to piss me off more than they should.
Every other hip hop blog has this user rated around 4/5. Album is great, classic dre production, features are what was expected, general flow of the album is fantastic. 4-4.5/5 all day and if you say otherwise, youre probably taking a break from your 8th grade social studies homework because youre a gd 12 year old.

    56. Dre sounds kind of corny rapping on this; his flow and voice sound so much different than before. The song about his diary, for instance, has a very corny, popcorn type hook. I don’t think this album is bad, especially not when you compare it to todays hip hop albums, but it is not at all a classic like 2001 or the chronic. After 16 years of waiting, we all expected a classic for sure. This doesn’t even stand against albums like Cheers or The doctor’s advocate. Its good, but not that good.

      1. I liked I need a doctor and Kush. Songs aren’t even a decade old but now I’ma live with the “I wonder if this or that” because I think if he continued producing the way he produced those 2 songs, It would’ve been a new age classic. In my opinion at least. This sounds like a Gangsta to pimp a butterfly.

    57. This is not a Dr Dre album, it has to much singing and why does Dre sound like some cheap imitation of Kendrick Lamar. That said Dre talks exactly the same shit as on 2001. The album sounds like somebody else did the album. I dont expect Dre to copy himself but his signature is tottaly gone. Im wondering which other ghostproducers have contributed to this album?

      1. Yes, I hate it when Dre tries a different flow/voice. Sounds fake, unnatural and weird. He sounds so much doper with his normal voice/flow on 2001.

      2. I think if he would’ve continued producing the way he produced I need a doctor and Kush that album would have been dope!

    58. 4.25 / 5 in my books, very solid album top to bottom; Genocide, It’s all on me, darkside/gone, Animals and Just another day are instant classics.

    59. i personally believe the album is much better than most shit coming out these times but it aint a bit in comparison to his previous projects. guys lets not forget dre is 50 years old and he definetely aint hot blooded anymore, the album actually sounds very good for an effort of a 50 year old dude, its mostly underage dudes that make bad critique over this album, i think dre didnt realy plan on making a masterpiece in the year 2015, he knows he cant compete with his old self anymore and so he tries to stick with the flow of the new era, dont forget he been here for over 30 years…

      1. That I need a doctor and kush song were fire! and that’s not even a decade old. I don’t know why he decided to switch things up because now I’ma just imagine how the album would have sound if he continued with the way he produced the songs. In my opinion though, it wasn’t great but it also wasn’t that bad. Probably just needs to grow on me.

    60. This is a great final album to come from Dr. Dre. Is it near the same as The Chronic and 2001? Absolutely not. But the Dr is 50 years old. Of course he isn’t going to sound the same way he did 16 years ago. Talk About It, All in a Days Work, Deep Waters all have amazing production and greats bars by both Dre and his features. 4.5/5

    61. I can’t find this album anywhere I’ve been looking since it came out. I can’t make an iTunes account because im 15 and don’t have a credit card. I need to hear this im a huge old school rap fan. Someone PLEASE tell me where i can find this album

    62. This shit is classic. Anyone saying otherwise didn’t really listen to the album or is just hating just to hate

    63. I wasn expecting this album to be prety bad or mediocre, very pleasantly suprised even more so that it stays from a pop sound i felt it was going to go with all thoose leaks over the years.

    64. This is garbage. Not one good song. Sounds just like any other whiny ass shit. With whiny ass choruses on each song. Sounds just like any other garbage rapper’s album. It sounds like a garbage french montana or young thug album.

    65. Well I’m glad the editors at least got the score right since all the site users are retarded. They shouldn’t even be allowed to rate it. You’d have to be a really shallow and uninitiated hip hop fan to call this garbage. It’s aggressive and modern and like both of Kendrick’s albums it’s going to take multiple listens to get the most out of. The bear albums in any kind of music can’t be easily digested and disseminated in one listen and this is no different. No obvious radio singles is a bold move for Dre. He doesn’t need the money, this is just for the art. If you aren’t down with it, go back to the simple shit you’re used to.

      4.5/5

    66. uptil I saw the bank draft which had said $9096 , I did not believe that my friends brother woz like they say really taking home money in their spare time on there computar. . there dads buddy started doing this 4 less than 15 months and resantly repaid the dept on there condo and bought a new Lancia Straton . check out here…………………….7.ly/mspe …………………………….COPY THIS LINK…………………….7.ly/mspe …………………………….COPY THIS LINK…………………….7.ly/mspe …………………………….COPY THIS LINK…………………….7.ly/mspe …………………………….COPY THIS LINK

    67. Surprisingly this album sounds good with good quality…Dre’s voice sound energized, even Snoop hit up a good flow that sounds fresh, The Game found his inner documentary skills…I was impressed by the youngsters too. This is album is somehow sweet, thank you Dr Dre u still got it…the beats are impressive although some sound experimental…Primo beat “Animals” is the best beat on here.

    68. This is 2015, this is as good as it gets. Dr Dre will never drop anything better than Chronic. Its like expecting Nas to drop another illmatic or Jay-Z to drop another Blueprint. Not in this life time. Hiphop is no longer the same. Nowadays you can have top selling records with no lyrical content. For this time and era Compton is good enough

      1. This Generation Doesnt know what is real hip hop . Go Listen to Fetty waps and the other trash artists you listen to.

    69. Most of the songs if not all, were reeaallly good. Just skip over Genocide; I’m sorry, maybe it’ll grow on me once I’ve listened to it over and over. Still a dope ass album from Dre. He was under pressure from *everyone* who was looking forward to this, and he delivered a gem.

    70. I think that it’s a very great album in an era of carbon copies and gimmicky rap. So many people will compare it to “The Chronic” which was fueled by funk samples and breakbeats. Or it will be compared to “2001” which had a more had a cinematic sound, or “Detox”, in which only 2 promo singles were released and a few leaks were heard. It’s called evolution for a reason. If every album was meant to sound the same, why would you continue buying copies of a debut? That’ll be like buying Nas’ “Illmatic” every time Sony Music decides to release a version every 10 years. I was kinda ticked that DPG, Rage or RBX wasn’t on it, but oh well… I still enjoyed it.

    71. all u people hating sound like u can do something better, lets hear your shit then.hit up with a link so we can listen..Dumb fucks!

    72. Straight up, Genocide is the only real banger on this album. Not even trolling. Game did his thing tho…

    73. First 9 songs is like Oh Shit! Then by the time it ends it’s just as good as the other albums he has done.
Loose Cannons with Xzibit and Cold 187um is like some of the most creative song crafting since Guilty Conscience… but it’s even more exciting. Great Album. If you don’t agree, “Fuck yo opinion, When was it worth something?”

    74. Dre is WAY overrated. DX is sucking Dre’s dick. These clowns don’t know what GOOD hip hop sounds like and you ain’t gonna hear anything GOOD comin’ out nowadays, period!

      1. hmmmm but how come you come to the site and take time to type all of that? you clearly care what DX things

    75. Everybody going for the Kendrick sound. Kendrick Lamar sucks! this album sucks. 3 plays and thats it.

      Documentary 2 better be different!

      1. Do you sleep with your clownmask on?
its a make up thing Whahahahahahaha
Great fucking album, sorry u lost your ears along this way…your missing out big time.
Now go dance to some silence Whahahahahaha

      1. Its so comfortable for a troll to trash everything thats pure.
They want that colourfull fluffy bubblegum shit and they are winning.
They dont want to see the black man in control they prefer the raging gay type
        -HA

      1. If u think this is even in the same breath as 2001 u shouldnt listen to hiphop or anything, just rip your ears off because they dont work for shit.

    76. I read through a lot of reviews and I want to ask everyone who says the Compton album isn’t good, can you please tell me what albums that were recently released are better then Compton?

    77. I give It a B. It will take more listens than one or two to give a good judgement. What bugs me is the album sounds off sonically. The treble is too high on most of it. Vocally and iinstruments. Dre sounds too high pitched on all but 2 songs (It’s All On Me and Talking to My Diary). Track to track volumes are a little off also and in certain songs the volume in the song varies. The album is very energetic and raw so, overall I like it. I’m surprised by all the low votes through but, we are in the dumb music era!!!

      1. I listen to it in the car and at home on real speakers not headphones or earbuds. My car system is made up of raw drivers from Dayton Reference and Vifa/ Tymphany ran 4 way active. My home systems are waveguide based using B&C DE250 compression drivers or other equivalent/ higher level drivers with Acoustic Elegance, JBL 2226 or Deltalite II 2512 woofers. Long story short its not the speakers. Do a Google search for Dr Dre Compton “harsh” “treble” you will see others saying it also. When the CD comes out I will buy. I currently have the iTunes m4a copy from a buddy.

    78. I dear Week Will to say something bout Dre not writing his own raps. Nigga went at Drake cause he thought he was soft, but he ended up getting bodied by a singing nigga!

    79. I’m a little disappointed with this album. I’m rating it as 4/5 and it’s still better than most things released this year, but the bar is higher for a Dre album and this doesn’t live up to its potential. I’m sure it will still be in my top 10 at the end of the year, but I was hoping for something classic, not just something above average.

    80. The production on this album is unbelievable! Simply a work of art! maybe dre thinks that detox tracks were way to0 commercial. He wanted compton to sound the right way he wanted.

    81. Not his best album. However, the album was still awesome. He showed creativity and open mindedness which I think could take you real far in today’s hip hop game. Hence, why a lot of the 90s artist are irrelevant today. I don’t have a song I dislike, I just wish he used more bass and that’s because I love bass.

    82. The problem is that y’all compare todays albums to Chief keef, Future, LIL B, trinidad JAMES… etc and then classify em as classics. sad.

    83. can some tell me when Dre actually raps on those songs? he tries to sound like an another 2015 rapper in those tiny bits…

the last few tech n9ne albums were much better than this.
only good song on compton is the diary song.

    84. A week in. based on one week so far (2 weeks for any album) i give it a 4. You have to remember it’s a soundtrack. Dr.Dre discography is 2 albums now and forever.

    85. I don’t think we’ve seen the end to this soundtrack. I feel like Dre may release this album in the CD version as a deluxe edition with more tracks. Then around Christmas time release a Refill version of it. This album is going to sell a hell of a lot more copies. This is a solo d album. 4.5/5 I still think we will here tracks like ” It’s Alive “

    86. This took a couple listens to appreciate but overall I think it’s a good album. I still was kinda craving that 2001 trademark Dre sound that you heard through the first decade of the 2000s. Especially considering the thousands of unreleased songs he did with artists that were signed with Aftermath like Stat Quo, Bishop Lamont, Joell Ortiz, Rakim, etc. along with many versions of Detox. There was so much praise about those tracks it’s a shame the public will probably never hear how great they might are/were.

I understand that the current body of work has to stand alone and deserve its on critique for what it is versus how it sounds like the previous work but it just would be nice to hear the files in the vault. Compton is a cool album just not in rotation heavy

    87. Not what I was expecting from Dre, but I loved the album. So easy to go from 1-16, each track offers something different, my personal favourite being “All in a Days work” … The way the album plays out, is like an hour long movie. Each track picks up where the previous ends and continues to build to the final track. Overall a phenomenal album.

      Personal Favorites
All In a Days Work, Genocide, Darkside, Medicine Man, For The Love Of Money, One Shot One Kill, Animals, Deep Water

    88. It’s a disappointment. Too much trap and pop influence and the cadences are poor. And the mix is way too bright. This might be comtemporary rap music, but it’s not hip hop.

    89. now I know to disregard dat user rating I can honestly say that that this shit should be rated 4-5 just out off the production alone. dudes 50 and this album provides more energy and originality than most shit out there. if not album of the year, this shit should be in anyones top 25.. too trap? maybe two tracks. its to different for trap fans… there is energy one just about every track.. young fans, did you expect a laid back album like drake or young thug? old fans, did you expect a chronic or chronic 2001? put it in some nice headphones and peep how dre’s got them secret backround sounds that only he can create. shits engineered and mastered to perfection. either y’all haters, looking for the past to come back, or don’t appreciate originality and innovation. dude just reinvented his sound to adapt to 2015. smh

    90. Album is classic!!! anyone that says otherwise needs to have their hearing checked cause this album is fire. Production is incredible and this album is about 10 years ahead of its time. Just go listen to a drake or meek track after listening to this album and you’ll quickly understand what I’m talking about. This shit goes hard.

    91. Its not a simple album for kids! The more you listen to it, the better it gets. After a while you realize its a classic! You hear new things you didn’t pay attention before. Beware: Good sound system is mandatory otherwise don’t even bother listening and dont write reviews based on dre sound from a fucking laptop…

    92. A great album. Dre is smart by cancelling Detox and releasing this album. It had no expectations and no hype behind it, unlike Detox which was so hyped, it would have been a disappointment no matter what he put out.

    93. Great fucking album, if you don’t give this 4 or 5 stars, you are not a hip hop fan and should go back to listening Beyonce and Aubrey(aka Drake). Dr Dre once again shows these clown ass rappers how to make a great album.

    94. WOW!!! You KNOW DX is getting a SERIOUS PAYCHECK for this rating!!! A four point fucking five?!?!? Are you outta your stupid ass muthafuckin minds?!?!?! You morons!!!! This is one of the biggest letdowns in hip hop! DRE is a fucking genius producer and this is the best he could do?! This is a 3 AT BEST you fucktards!!

    95. I grew up listening to Dr. Dre, I was not born in the 90’s or 00’s so I think this album sucks along with everyone over 25. I cant even listen to it, the audio quality isnt even top top level. I mean besides Dre does it even have more than 1 rapper from Compton on it? No Kurupt at all? Warren G new EP is about 10000000% better.

      1. That’s what you get from downloaded a bootlegged version dude buy an authentic version 2) buy a good headphone or speaker(s)

    96. This album is a WestCoast Classic. If you call it trash get a better system or headphones. This album not made to be listen on a labtop or trash speakers. Too much bass for that. That how the WestCoast ride G. Sorry if it not soft shit ya use to or that alarm clock bullshit EDM Music. Everybody went hard on this classic, love Eminem verse on here.Kdot did his thang, so did Game. Every track was different, that why I loved it. Dre good way to go out my nig. C.O.M.P.T.O.N. Word to my nigga Eazy

    97. Dr. Dre released a modern classic. I love the beats, features, stories, history, and delivery. What a wonderful surprise!

    98. Haha user rated 2.5. That’s exactly what this trash deserves meanwhile drake about to drop views and make us forget this garbage exists.

      1. This is hip hop not hip pop. Dre and drake dont belong in the same sentence. This aint no sing along rock your kids to sleep album smh. Leave Drake where he belongs… on the nightclub dancefloor yolo hahaha

    99. im sorry but this album was a big letdown. it was a good album, just not great. id say anywhere from 3 to 4 star rating is exceptable but a 4.5 is a little high. its just not a classic like classics back in the. day which were more innovative and less calculated. classics re-invent music and sound natural not like their “trying”. this sounds like dr.dre is trying to take the “to pimp a butterfly” and make it work for him. its just a bit of an all around mess but there are some bangers that grow on you

      1. pimp a butterfly sounds a lot different than Compton. what albums are you listening to? and why does everybody expect Dre to make a third Chronic album instead of something like this? Honestly the album is a banger from front to back. Its a modern day classic. Is it as innovative as Chronic and Chronic 2001? No. But the album is masterfully produced, has serious fucking rapping on it, and it’s the only album in the last several years that I can honestly listen to without skipping one damn song. you can’t ask for any more these days. fans are just fickle. Its like everyone wants Eminem to rap like its MMLP 1 or the Slim Shady album. These guys are fully grown, and still releasing quality music. instead of calling it average, this should be celebrated. the most prolific producer in hip hop just released his swan song, and its dope

    100. User rating is harsh, Hiphopdx is too high. I think a 3.5 or 4 is acceptable, needs to be enjoyed on a decent system though. You should get a free copy with a pair of beats by dre like some 3D glasses at a movie theater. Nowhere near as good as the Chronic albums but nobody was expecting that. Has great production and good beats (can be a little busy sometimes, I think Premo saved that a bit), has some tracks with dope bars but nothing eyebrow raising but mainly the album has a plot/story to it and a concept. Hiphopdx has rated like 15 albums at 4 or better this year and the users are not much better. In 2015 there are not 15 albums that would have got 4 mics in the source when it mattered, so just stop it.

      1. smoking crack…don’t compare it to other Dre albums. compare it to everything else that’s been released this year. Once you do it that way its clear Dre has the album of the year, and probably of the last several years

      2. Oh so you mean, we should lower are standards a little bit? I didn’t bash the album, in fact my quote is ” Nowhere near as good as the Chronic albums but nobody was expecting that.” The best album of the last several (4 or more) years? Ya idk about that one

    101. the album is just average…nothing special on it.

albums like Bush from snoop dogg or the last tech n9ne album are smashers but not this boring thing 😉

    102. Instant classic. All the old school shit with the new school. Actually liked it allot better than TPAB. Cant touch gkmc, but still.

    103. Doctor’s orders: go fuck yourself
Take two of these in the morning, overdose and kill yourself
      Doctor’s orders…

    104. Average User Reviews: 2.55?
LOLOL. Some of y’all must have a hearing problem.

I was skeptical at first, but Dre’s production is GOD LEVEL on ‘Compton.’ The high hat transition after “All In a Day’s Work,” the Eazy E cameo and venomous piano loop on “Darkside/Gone,” the experimental bass and choppy reverb on “Deep Water,” the siren over the jagged guitar beat on “One Shot One Kill,” and Em’s ridiculous verse on “Medicine Man?”

So many incredible instrumental details — ‘Compton’ is an instant CLASSIC.

      1. Some people got so used to hearin wack shit (and acceptin it) they forgot wot REAL dope shit sounds like smh

      2. Whilst I agree there are some amazing levels of detail on this album and it has moments of brilliance pretty much all of the beats are terrible. Nothing to make my head nod. The beautiful detail is the icing on the cake which turns a good album into a great one, it’s just that Dre has iced a pretty shitty cake this time.

      3. I agree. If people bought the album or downloaded it on itunes the reviews wouldn’t be biased. This album is a instant classic.

      4. dre has made better beats…besides half the cuts on this album aren’t even his own production… i thought i was getting trolled with that first trap song… this album is a solid 7/10

    105. Everything except Genocide, Just Another Day and Talking To My Diary has been deleted. Beautiful levels of detail and amazing mixing/mastering don’t improve the awful beats and corny choruses. Dre has always been a dismal rapper but the beats and his distinctive voice (which has disappeared) more than used to make up for it. I am simply baffled as to how anyone could think ‘For The Love Of Money’ is anything but terrible – that was corny back in 1995 when BT&H did it. I wanted to love this album and have listened to it several times but just can’t get into it.

      1. You are a little under 20 year old suburban boy with a fast internet connection without a doubt.

What so Kendrick was whack on deep water so you deleted it? Talkin bouts beats didn’t come in so you deleted it? You heard em on Medicine man and though “nah, delete it to make room for ______” He comes real on animals and that was nothing you deleted it for a fucking podcast or some shit that you like.

I saw this post before man, and thought about it for a bit but whatever. Then I was home listening to the album and for the love of money came on and man and I thought back to this.

….Theres no way you came up on hip hop in the 90’s or 2000s properly if you can’t appreciate this and what it is. Theres no way man, go get a fuckin Deadmau5 CD and critique that shit or something.

    106. If I can’t listen to it on my smartphone speakers and enjoy the music than the songs just aren’t good. 2 stars. Oh btw Kendrick Lamaar is overrated and that white dude deserved the Grammy

      1. FOH with your ringtone rap ass. seriously? its garbage cuz you can’t listen to it right on your gay ass $50, 3 year old smartphone? You’re lame Curtis. go treat yourself to some Beats and hear this shit for real

    107. anybody under 25 isn’t equipped to fully listen to and understand what the fuck this is. all of us older than 25 know what’s up. Dre>>>>>>>>>

      1. nondckrdr who is actually a dickrider….you just called this weak. your ass just fell into irrelevancy. congrats. FOH with that “weak” trash. You probably from jersey or something and still in high school

    108. Even though this is a soundtrack this album is easily one of the best rap albums that I have herd in a long time. The sound quality is top notch on a jayz production level. I love how animated they get with the skits that play into the next track. Hopefully this will set the bar for our future artist. This album is a masterpiece good from beginning to end.

    109. Haven’t stopped listening to the album. This is the best I’ve heard in a long while. Even the tracks that I don’t like as much are still solid. I can have this album on repeat walking around the house and never feel like I need to change it. I don’t know how people say there aren’t bangers on this…

    110. HipHopDX you NEED to sort out your voting system. Clearly, from reading the comments, this album has scored higher than the ratings it has received.
You’re about to loose yet another avid reader/visitor to your site.

    111. No its not the best and it not the worst Dre didn’t sound like himself at all the beats wasn’t him he just trying to conform to the industry sound he just needs to go back on his hard hitting piano keys get guys like Game to write him some stuff because he will be able to sound like himself not that shit he was doing he sound tooooooo much like kendrick and all those young cats

    112. The album delivers a logistic and calculated play to break free from the “box” that Dre. fit into.
The only problem is I love that box. The golden Era is behind us, and I guess if we have to look forward, this will do.
On a side note, Kendrick’s last album falls into this new Era as well.

The face of hiphop is changing, and I like the way she used to look.

    113. There are two people in this world – people with good ears, and people with shitty ears. This album is hot. Plain and simple.

    114. This album sounds rushed Dre needs to let some of the Detox out the vault and apologize for releasing this garbage this album reminds me of Eminem Relapse why you ask? Because it should of never happened I’m super disappointed

      1. You sound like a young Fuck boy or someone form The east coast…STFU and don’t reply to the GPOAT. The greatest ears of all time.

    115. The bar is set so low today. This album is terrible. Dre is normally known as a trend setter, but he just conformed to today’s sound on this one. He should never let Kendrick lamar write his verses. He sounds god awful spitting with Kendrick’s delivery. Too much singing going on on just about every song. This is about Compton, not Beverley Hills. Majority of the features on the album have never even been to Compton. Dre just looking for a quick check on this one. Easily his weakest project, but people will over rate cuz it’s Dre.

    116. Lmao I can’t believe all the Dre dick riders in the comment section. Making every excuse in the book for this shitty album. It’s like all the Dre stan’s got together in the biggest marketing scheme ever to overrate this garbage. I just don’t see how any true Dre fan or even true fan of Rap can say with a straight face that this album is good or even a “Instant Classic”. Has ppl’s standards drop that low over the years for this crap to be considered a classic?

Like I said before I have heard every excuse in the book from Dre stans saying such crap as “Stop comparing it to old stuff” “Get better headphones”. Lmao cracks me up that Dre stans just can’t admit Dre dropped a garbage of an album.

I mean sure there’s some good verses on here and some decent production but I hold Dre to a much higher standard than most rappers. He has dropped two classic albums not to mention all the amazing production he has done for other artists. So yes as a Dre fan I hold him to a standard and he failed here. After 16 long years this is seriously the best he can do? There is no classic Dre sound here. Hell he barely produced anything on this album. All this album seems is a lazy cash in for the Compton film.

Hell this so called “Masterpiece” is nowhere near blowing up the charts but I’m sure the Dre stans will find some excuses for that as well. All I know is screw the reviews and you Dre dick riders the album is hot “GARBAGE” period. Dre should have just released Detox and let us be the judge of its quality. I’m sure whatever he had in the vault is better than this crap.

    117. I hated it at first. However on the third listen I somehow fell in Love with it. It’s a fun album still. Plus there’s some heavy Versus on there from everyone. All them young kids on it are talented. Big Up Dre ????

    118. Genocide is a hiphop atomic bomb. Incredibly dark and booming and Lamar is beasting hiphop. Great album, complex and mature. Masterpiece.

    119. Fuckin Kendrick on DEEP WATER!!!! Oh my God – That song is top five greatest thing to happen in music as far as production, concept and Kendricks bone crushing verse!!!!! “Once upon a time I shot a nigga on accident – tried to kill him but I guess I needed more practising” I still cant believe this fucker!!!

    120. This album was no better than a 4 tops. First time in his career he conformed to modern sounds rather than creating or innovating a new sound as he has done before. There are no true homeruns here, just base hits. Id actually be curious as to hearing the latest version of Detox as it had been worked on during the golden era of Aftermath.
