The White House was put on lockdown today (May 20) after a man with a gun approached a security checkpoint.
CNN reports that when law enforcement asked him to put the weapon down, he refused and security shot him in the stomach. He was arrested and is being treated for his injury at a local hospital. The suspect does not have a criminal history with the Secret Service.
The lockdown was lifted at around 4 p.m. EST. ABC reports that the lockdown lasted about 45 minutes.
President Barack Obama was not on the premise at the time of the shooting and vice president Joe Biden was placed in the security complex.
A White House official gave additional information about the well-being of the government representatives after the shooting.
“No one within or associated with the White House was injured, and everyone in the White House is safe and accounted for,” the source tells CNN. “The President has been made aware of the situation.”
The Secret Service confirmed the news of the shooting on Twitter, saying all people it is responsible for protecting were accounted for.
“The Secret Service is confirming a police involved shooting near the @WhiteHouse complex,” the official account says. “All Secret Service protectees are safe.”
