Tyrese is embroiled in a child support battle, and his most recent court filing blames a movie franchise for his inability to make full payments.

According to documents obtained by Radar Online published on Tuesday (March 12), the actor and singer recently asked the court to shut down his ex-wife Samantha Lee’s attempt to have him found in contempt.

Lee had filed a motion earlier this year alleging that Tyrese had been refusing to pay the full $10,000 per month he had been ordered to pay. Instead, she said he paid her less than half in December 2023 and January 2024. She then pointed to multiple trips overseas he’d taken to say that he had the money and was just not using it for child support.

In his filed response, Tyrese’s lawyer noted that his income has been significantly impacted in recent years – especially because no Fast & Furious movie has been made as of late.

“The years in which he films [a Fast & Furious] franchise movie, his income is the highest in those years,” the attorney argued. “In 2022, [Gibson] filmed the franchise movie in question, and he has not filmed any segment in that franchise movie since 2022. Consequently, [Gibson’s] income has fluctuated downward since the trial in this case, and as expected, [Gibson] does not earn the same amount that he earned in August 2022.”

His lawyer noted the 2023 Hollywood actors and writers strikes impacted his income as well. In addition, the attorney claimed the vacations in question were inexpensive because the flights were paid for with miles and he stayed with friends overseas.

A judge has yet to rule on the matter.

During a Joe Budden Podcast appearance last November, Tyrese elaborated on his dramatic split and the ensuing court orders that he insists are unreasonable — one of which once ordered him to pay $20,000 a month in child support for their four-year-old daughter.

In a clip from the interview posted on his Instagram, he said: “We never spent $20,000 on my daughter when we were together, and I had the money. Like, who spends that kind of money on a kid? [My daughter] was one when [Samantha] took my baby from me.

“We never spent $20,000 a month on our child and the credit card was wide open, so what the fuck do you suddenly need that kind of money for?”
