Tyler, The Creator Says Eminem Picks The “Worst Beats Ever”

Tyler, The Creator sat down with Rick Rubin for a recent episode of the legendary producer’s podcast, Broken Record. During the conversation, the topic turned to production and the Odd Future alum declared Eminem didn’t exactly have an ear for choosing good beats.

“Some people who hear a smooth beat like, ‘I’ma going fuckin’ yell on it! I’mma do this,'” he starts. “They’re more thinking of saying cool sh*t rather than making a good song … Eminem picked some of the worst beats ever.”

He quickly added, “His energy and witty lines is what made the songs cool.”

Tyler, who also appeared in the four-part HBO documentary on Rubin called Shangri-La, was a target of Em’s wrath on the Kamikaze cut “Fall.” Shady received a healthy amount of backlash for calling Tyler a homophobic slur in the song.

The Flower Boy mastermind, however, said he wasn’t bothered by it.

Earlier this month, he told The Guardian, “Did you ever hear me publicly say anything about that? Because I knew what the intent was. He felt pressured because people got offended for me. Don’t get offended for me.

“We were playing Grand Theft Auto when we heard that. We rewound it and were like, ‘Oh.’ And then kept playing.”

    1. I been saying this, Eminem picks the worst beats and the dumbest hooks, kamikaze could’ve been way better. That said, I still liked the album

    2. Funny, Rubin exec produced Mmlp2 and Revival… Fuck Tyler Create Nothing… What you ever done of any greatness to match up to Slim?

      1. You don’t have to have made legendary music to have an opinion on someone’s beat selection. Aside from the Dre beats, eminems selection has sucked. Just like Nas. I’ve never made a great piece of music. Doesn’t mean I’m wrong when I say Nas sucks at picking beats….

          1. All because I can’t make beats doesn’t mean I can’t have tastes. You can’t be president can you? By your logic, you cannot criticize Trump or other leaders, unless you yourself can attain a position of power. Jackass logic…..

            1. Those who can’t do criticize…if the shoe fits so be it…and your logic is elementary at best lol having taste doesn’t mean your a Tastemaker nor does it mean your irrelevant opinion has hit any mark…btw I don’t give a fuck about being a figurehead I like actual power you FUCKIN amatuer

        1. It means you’re just a talking head with nothing but an opinion…to each his own but I’d be careful running around proudly spewing nonsense as you’d sound as ignorant as you do on here…fuckin amatuer

    3. On gawd Em pick trash beats or beats he made himself. Same with j.cole rapping over his self made beats.

        1. That’s a complete fact… But at least the beats STAMPED with Dres name were Eminem highlights, even though Dre used ghost prdocuers.

          1. First you would have to do yourself a favor and find out the true definition of a producer then realize that no one produces for Dre. Dre in fact produces these so called “ghostproducer’s beats into real songs.

        1. Every low (and they are fewer) is matched by a high, on every album. He has plenty of bangers to go along with the more questionable beats.

    4. He does pick the worst beats. MM is a pop artist. Pop fans love wack beats because they’re not hip hop fans. Hip hop artists must have dope beats to survive.

    5. The Eminem Show is regarded as one of his best Albums and he produced most of it.

Em might pick some wack beats but he’s a pretty decent producer.

The same can’t be said about most of the hiphop artists out there today. Some who don’t ever write their own lyrics.

      1. Em was at one point a decent producer for hard beats. His style would be too dated to pull off well today. Tyler’s beats however have gotten way better over time, and they started off pretty good if not weird.

    6. Way to lose any credibility you might have had Tyler. Em has some of the most original beats out there and a lot of them are from Dr Dre so you just sound like a butt hurt (literally and figuratively).

Superman, cleaning out my closet, even My Band was great for a silly song. Way to drop Ems name just to try to stay relavent in google searches. You suck. Piss off.

      1. You mean like how Em just dropped a fucking entire album of name dropping to stay relevant, FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!

    7. As crazy as it sounss, eminem is better on sub par beats. I dont know why but its true. Hes always killed beats with not alot of instrumentation. U never want rap on a eminem instrumental

    8. I agree with that, it was most obvious on Revival. At least Marshal Mathers LP 2 felt tonally consistent and the album has grown on me since. Eminem tends to get a pass because his lyrics and flows do the heavy lifting even when the beat is lacking. And I’ll pick Em on a bad beat over a mumble rapper on a good beat any day of the week. The guy just needs some honest people in his corner to help with editing and track choice. Nas is also a top tier lyricist but suffers the same fault.

    9. So what…Em is obviously true to the artform of lyricism despite some mediocre albums. I’m not a huge fan. Tyler fell way off and just released a whole album of wackness. I was a big fan of him and Earl but no longer. I’m done with Tyler and his boring gimmicks. Stick to hip hop and he might have a good point criticizing someone else’s choice of beats.

    10. Maybe he picks beats he knows noone else can flow to? His skill is unmatched. Doesn’t matter what beat it is, he’s going to take it to the cleaners.

      1. Hip Hop 101 is Beats and Rhymes. Em’s beat are boring with wack hooks & terrible drums ETC. Em wouldn’t notice a good beat if was inside his birthday cake.

            1. Think about it. Some Joe Schmoe rapper with little talent….. gets little sales.

Em is a wizard on any beat. If you think the beat is lame, it’s probably because your favorite rapper doesn’t have the “talent” to flow to it.

    11. Imagine having nuts that big that you tell one of the greatest hip hop producers that one of the greatest rappers picks the worst beats, knowing full well that the worst of these beats are coming from that producer.

    12. He’s not lying
      The streets don’t bump Eminem
No bangers outside of a few joints on Em Show and 8 Mile. MMLP is straight but it’s a headphones only album

People say Nas but Em has no Made You Looks, no Live Nigga Rap, no Last Words, no A Queens Story, etc. Nas has chosen some fire production, just nothing to catch a look from wack ass radio. You cant blast Em anywhere other than with that one friend who loves Anime and old MTV

      1. This whole “streets don’t bump em” has gotten tiring. Most idiots that make that claim, aren’t even from the street, fucken squares with keyboards.

    13. When you actually listen to what he’s saying and the context he’s saying it in. He Makes absolute sense. But who cares about the nuances right? ??‍♂️

    14. I can already see Tyler on VladTV with Vlad trying to convince him that it’s actually Nas who picks the worst beats.

    15. Whenever eminem named gets mentioned the comment section lights the fuck up. A rapper needs to put out a full album dissing em (for publicity of course) and blow up.
