The New West Side Connection Speaks On Dr. Dre, Advice From 50 Cent & More

The trio that is the new West Side Connection (Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Terrace Martin) reintroduced themselves during an interview with ThisIs50.com and also spoke on Dr. Dre, shared some advice they received from 50 Cent, and more.

Jay Rock spoke briefly on working with Dr. Dre in the studio when asked if the iconic rapper/producer would be on his next project.

“Actually I hope so. Shit, I hope so. Nah that’s the big homie. I had the fortunate time just to be in the studio and see how he works and see how he gets down man. It was just a good feeling being around and seeing what he do and seeing how he gets down,” Jay Rock explained. “And that was just a lot of motivation for me. That dude he go hard in the studio. Like I said just being around that good atmosphere it was a good look for me.”

Later in the interview Kendrick went on to praise producer and fellow new West Side Connection member Terrace Martin stating that he’s one of those producers that’ll go above and beyond.

“A lot of times you meet producers and they just give you a bunch of beat CD’s and let you rap over it. And in my eyes I think the artist really just produced the record because we putting the words over it. But this dude he’s going to give you direction because he’s planned everything [live] anyway,” said Kendrick when asked about working with Terrace. “He’s hearing it on a different level so when you write shit, the shit you write down, how you project it and how you put it out on the mic he’s gonna coach you on that and really produce the record and add different sounds to what you’re talking about. And that’s what makes a dope record man. That’s what really enhances it. That’s what this dude do.”

Kendrick also shared a bit of advice rapper 50 Cent gave the group prior to the taping of the interview.

“It’s crazy cause Fif just came in right now and one of the key things he said [was] hard work overrides talent when talent is not [worthy]. I always had the natural talent and skill for it. I think we all got it as individuals. Just coming up, where we from, and being around music,” Kendrick explained. “But at the end of the day you put that effort in where you felt like ‘I really need to work for it and dedicate myself to what I want to do.’ That’s when things really start happening.”

    1. Why do people like Kendrick Lamar??? I’ve listened to a lot of his songs, and I just don’t get it….He’s cool, but like J Cole, he’s not really bring anything new to the game….Plus, his voice is weird as fuck…I can’t stand that speech impediment/lispy thing he has…It sounds like he’s spitting into the mic (literally)

      1. Good lyricist. Doesn’t try to act like the toughest dude in the world.

As far as nothing ‘new’ to the game, when was the last time someone did that?

Shit, Jay Z’s probably still the biggest name in the industry and he didn’t provide anything ‘new’ to the game.

He was just an ill lyricist with a knack for writing intricate rhymes and telling good stories. All shit that was done before. Doesn’t make him less of a talent.

      2. Loads of people bring new styles and trends…Jay Electronia, ASAP Rocky, Charles Hamilton, even wack rappers like Big Sean/Drake contribute to hiphop. I don’t see anything special about Kendrick besides a weird voice and okay lyrics.

      3. Drake-brings dat new venting and “Emo” type of songs w/his mixture of singing/rapping

J.Cole-rapping producer and is often said he’s a mixture of Nas/Jay-Z. He can do songs that have alot of depth(lost ones) and commercial music(Work out/mr nice watch)

I think Kendrick Lamar brings dat new consious rap coming from da WestCoast.(Most rappers r have dat gansta/street rap)I jus think he’s a bit overrated. Yes he can rap but his voice can be weird sometimes and his songs arent that great. I still respect him as a good MC tho, im jus not a big fan.

    2. Yall tripping this gonna be dope. I think the name is corny too but their just paying homage to cube and them.

    3. watch Kendrick and J.Cole becoming the Greatest rappers real soon. They are already better than most of your mainstream favorites!!!

    4. the new weside connection??? shet stop pussyin around coz aint nobody like The Big Fish, WC & Mack One O.Thats da real WESIDE CONNECT n y’all muthafuckaz kno it.

      1. Nou u fuck off anonymous cunt, crooked puts his heart and soul into the shit… He’d be a perfect fit for someone in the “new west side connection” he’s way harder. So are his rap skills, kendrick couldn’t come up with the same punch lines or deliver that sick rhyme pattern crooked does. Have a nice day asshole

    5. I’m so tired of fans of hip-hop always putting things up as a competition. So many people on the comments are acting as if enjoying the so called New West Side Connection means abandoning love for the OG one. Is it a really that hard to like both for different reasons? I like documentaries and action movies, I don’t let Food, Inc. fuck up my love for Children of Men. Chill.

      1. they need an original name, it’s just a bs name. dude’s can spit. this is a sorry ass escuse for a group name. Same thing with slaughterhouse, come up with your own name, for 2 groups of creative motherfuckers this is some of the corniest shit ever

    6. Kendrick and Krit are the two realest new niggas in the game right now. If you haven’t listened to Section 80 or Return of 4eva your missing out.

    7. dope group!!!! kendrick n jay rock r spitters never heard of terrace but i would imagine him being dope if he is down with them 2 rappers… props to 50 he like a og in this rap shit now

    8. for real, cuz this unoriginal shit aint necessary.. put 2 3 words together, come up with a new name, any fucking name… dope rappers, but fuck this shit

    9. fuck da west! fuck da east! fuck Dr. Gay! fuck Kendrick Lame! fuck 50 Cunt. swag

da south runs da rap game. Lil Weezy & YMCMB. we run dis shit. we are fire. we run da rap game. we gettin money. YMCMB 100BILLIONDOLLARS swag

    10. should be schoolboy q, dom kennedy, jay rock

kendrick is good, but he ain’t no ice cube.
he’s a artist but he ain’t the hardest

    11. Props 2 da west! props 2 da east! Respect goes out 2 Dr.Dre!, Kendrick Lamar! and 50 Cent. Peace

da rap game stayed in da south for too long. Lil Weezy & YMCMB aint shit. they are a hype.
Time for real rappers to run this rap game. Its not all about the money. SKILLS

      peace

    12. the west (like rap in general) got SOFT. these kids are wack compared to the real westside connection.

      BOW DOWN

kendrick might be a better lyricist than mack 10 and WC, but he can’t fuck with them on the mic and will never pen something as hard and gangsta as BOW DOWN.

i notice most kids gassing kendrick have never heard early cube, or the OG connection. step yall knowledge up, do the history, and youll dickride less.

    13. THE westside connection (cube mack 10 and wc) was hard.

these following ass niggas are not. jay rock is a mumble mouth bum with no hits and zero appeal, kendrick is a gay voiced softie, and schoolboy q is a wanna be del the funky homosapien that sucks.

why they gotta fuck the name up?

its like east coast kids saying theyre the new wu tang. now youre not, why compare yourselves? just makes you look weak in comparison. no originality, rap fucking stinks in 2012, only gay ass kids think its in good hands.

    14. you all are idiots if you truly believe Kendrick Lamar is just “decent”. who the the hell should they replace him with TYGA? lmao what the hell are ya’ll going through?

      1. Don’t think that’s likely man. Game and Kendrick are tight, he’s been championing him since before he blew up.

    15. The New Westside Connection? So, it’s bad enough that Hollywood has no original ideas and we’re forced to see new versions of the old movies – But now hip-hop is doing the same crap?

And to make matters worse, you’re taking three dudes who can’t hold a candle to WC, Mack 10 and most importantly – ICE CUBE – and branding them as a new version of one of the dopest trios in the history of the rap game? That’s pathetic.

      1. WORD. but are they proclaiming it or is it HipHopDX’s way of making a headline? either way it’s corny and in my opinion, disrespectful

    16. yo i fuccs wit k dot rock soul schoolboy all day black hippy with that said new wsc no way not the same … new est yea but wsc never they didn deem themselfs that tde black hippy what they rep so all u haters back off other ppl sayin they the new wsc imo it would be better if crooked dom and rock were wsc they fit the mold

    17. Kendrick goes RIDICULOUSLY hard. Comparisons is one of the things that did kill Hip-Hop but K. Dot really has something….I don’t care about the rest of those dudes.
