This week, a Young Money affiliate was shot in the Midwest – and then went shopping in New York. A “Stop The Violence” alum spoke out against a top Rap sensation for calling her a homophobic slur. Also, one of the most successful rappers from five years ago broke down his new business model, as two industry-giant deejays rehashed a beef that goes back to the 1990s. 

Honey Cocaine Shot After Tyga Concert In Nebraska

The week’s biggest story was when Tyga protege Honey Cocaine was shot Monday (March 19) in Omaha, Nebraska. The female rapper survived the shooting, and even tweeted within 24 hours that she was later shopping in New York City. Later in the week, Tyga revealed that the shooting stemmed from the Young Money rapper’s decision not to have opening acts at his concert, prompting violence from local performers.

MC Lyte Reacts To Tyler, The Creator’s “Dyke” Lyric

In a HipHopDX exclusive, legendary emcee MC Lyte reacted to a perceived diss from Odd Future’s Tyler, The Creator. Tyler used “Rella” on OFWGKTA’s new retail release The OF Tape, Vol. 2 to say, “Let’s get it poppin’ like MC Lyte around some dykes.” The 1980s alum told DX:

“I definitely was insulted. First off, it’s totally new school. [Tyler, The Creator] has yet to understand [that] although he can have quite a bit of followers and fans, it does take a moment from one’s entry in the business for them to really understand what it is that we do for other people. And how we inspire them, and how we influence them, and how we can literally make or break another human being’s day. And with all that I’ve done throughout my years in inspiring generations of people, I think it very irresponsible of him.

With saying that, we do have a generation that is quite irresponsible when it comes to what it is that they’ll say [and] their behavior. [But still], it took me by surprise. One, because I know of people who know him and kind of hold him in high esteem. [But] from that action alone, I don’t know that I feel it worthy for me to address it in any other format, outside of this. But, yeah, I thought it was very careless.” Lyte, who has never confirmed rumors of homosexuality, also spoke about the fact that Tyler’s bandmate Syd The Kyd, is openly lesbian.

Chamillionaire Breaks Down His Post-Universal Business Model

In another DX exclusive, Chamillionaire explained his Universal Records departure. The Houston, Texas emcee also explained why it’s more sensible (and lucrative) for artists to sell music to their fans than dwell on free mixtapes.

The multi-platinum rapper said, “I been going to tech conferences for a while and just trying to find new ways to do things. Now I’m not saying [with] everything. I’m not saying your major-label album has to come out that way, but I think it’s definitely worth a try to actually put out content and see if the fans think you’re worthy enough of paying for it.

Everybody’s just on this mission to stay on the blogs for two days so they just throw their music out for free. And everybody’s just competing for the space. But you can throw out so much music and you’re spending money and the time and it’s just burning [a hole in your pocket]. It’s not a real smart business model.

There are some people that are worth spending on. So I just wanted to see where I was at. And then I put it out, and then instantly, the first day, I looked at how much it sold and I was like, ‘Okay, this is really gonna work.'” The rest can be read here.

DJ Clue & Funkmaster Flex Revisit An Old Feud

Old ’90s rivals Funkmaster Flex and DJ Clue once battled in the streets with mixtapes, and later on the charts. Now the two New York deejay icons battled at their radio stations, over how and who had Nicki Minaj’s new single, “Beez In The Trap” first. Flex was quoted as claiming he hacked Clue’s email, while Clue called the HOT 97 deejay an “old, fat dude” and “compulsive liar.” Yesterday (March 23) Clue came back for a bonus round, stating his leading in ratings.
