Tech N9ne Defends Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse, Says It Woke Rappers Up

Several rappers were upset with Kendrick Lamar’s verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” Cassidy, Lupe Fiasco, Joe Budden and Papoose are among the artists who released songs dissing the Compton, California rapper because of his lyrics on the song, which also featured Jay Electronica.

Tech N9ne, on the other hand, says he appreciated Kendrick Lamar’s verse on “Control,” which included the lines, “”I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhymin’ with, but this is Hip Hop and them niggas should know what time it is. That goes for Jermaine ColeBig K.R.I.T.WalePusha T, Meek MillA$AP RockyDrake, Big Sean, Jay Electron[ica], Tyler[, the Creator]Mac Miller. I got love for you all but I’m tryin’ to murder you niggas. Trying to make sure your core fans never heard of you niggas [and that] they don’t want to hear not one more noun or verb from you niggas. What is competition? I’m trying to raise the bar high.”

“My reaction was, ‘Yeah, nigga. Wake these motherfuckers up,’” Tech N9ne, who featured Kendrick Lamar on “Fragile,” a song included on the Strange Music rapper’s new album, Something Else, says during an interview with MONTREALITY. “Everybody’s so lazy, man. I always raise my bar. My bar is always raised, every album. ‘He’s A Mental Giant’ to ‘So Dope’ or whatever you listen to that Tech N9ne is technical. It’s always pushing my peers to go even harder when they do a song with me, so for Kendrick to take it a step further, say names and shit, is really waking niggas up and if anybody got a problem with my lil homie, I got his back. Sorry and shit. Let’s go.”

Even though Tech N9ne released Something Else less than a month ago, he’s already mapped out two more projects. His seven-song rock EP, Therapy, is slated for a November 5 release, while he’s also planning the blueprint for his next studio LP.

Special Effects is just an idea, but it’s a wild idea because it was hard enough trying to outdo All 6’s And 7’s, so I did it,” says Tech N9ne, who is on the Something Else Canadian Tour 2013, which is scheduled to stop at the Republic Nightclub in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada tonight (August 21). “How I’m going to outdo Something Else? It’s gotta be Special Effects. It’s gotta be something where you’re fucking with the beats. It’s gotta be something where you’re fucking with the vocals, lyrically, just a notch higher. It’s going to be hard because the theme for Something Else is massive with the meteorite hitting in Kansas City and the burgundy mist and everything, so Special Effects is going to have to be some fucking Terminator shit. I don’t know, man. But we’ll see.”

      1. So a guy has literally more than a decade of dedicated work to the underground and his core fans, does two songs with “mainstream rappers” and deserves to be labeled a sell out?
        Fucking ridiculous.
Idiots like you should euthanize yourselves

    1. Started back after Killer in ’08. Since then he’s put out more and more releases in shorter amounts of time with watered down material. his shit so predictable now.

    2. b.o.b. can actually rap and he only had wayne on 1 song and in return wayne had him on the carter 4. He’s doin collabos like that on purpose to gain more exposure. How does that make him a sell out?

      1. he also does songs with wiz khalifa t pain and a lot more he aint underground no more so you underground nerds can hop off and find a new underground artist to dickride

      2. why would anyone want to be underground in the first place?

thats just what unsuccessful niggas call themselves to make it sound less pathetic!

      3. he could be real if he wanted to but theres no money in being a real emcee ,, why u think every one sell out ,, more people that like rap than real hip hop head

      4. why would anyone want to be underground in the first place? – do you have any idea how much loot this cat has made, millions sold and he’s getting more per album than your fav

    3. For those who say he’s selling out. If it means he can grow his label and provide us with more music like MAYDAY, Stevie Stone, Ces Cru, Rittz, etc., I don’t get what is the problem.

    4. woke up? its just one narcileptic mothafucka addressing a bunch of narcileptic mothafuckas.
