TDE’s Punch Issues Call-To-Action After Hearing JAY-Z’s ‘Neck & Wrist’ Bars: ‘Celebrating Mediocrity Stops Now’

A JAY-Z verse equates to gold these days. Not only has the Hip Hop mogul not released a solo album since 2017’s 4:44, he’s also more focused on his lucrative business endeavors than rap. So when Pusha T announced Hov was on his next single “Neck & Wrist,” the Hip Hop community collectively celebrated the impending bars from one of the culture’s most celebrated MCs.

Right on schedule, Pusha T dropped the Hov and Pharrell-assisted “Neck & Wrist” on Wednesday (April 6) much to the delight of his fans and peers alike. Top Dawg Entertainment president Punch took his thoughts to Twitter and admitted JAY-Z’s verse ruined most contemporary rap for him. At the same time, he issued a call-to-action.

“Jay Z is THE G.O.A.T,” he wrote. “Not A Goat but THE G.O.A.T…. I can’t listen to this man’s verses and then listen to what’s going on currently and say it’s good. Celebrating mediocrity stops right now.”

Meanwhile, So So Def founder Jermaine Dupri was essentially speechless and shared several head-exploding emojis on Twitter from his home in Brookhaven, Georgia. JAY-Z’s longtime friend and engineer Young Guru simply tweeted a line from his verse: “HOV was always gonna be HOV!”

JAY-Z was able to addresses several things throughout the song in a relatively short amount of time. His verse started with a nod to Faizon Love’s 2020 interview with VladTV in which he questioned Hov’s “drug lord” past.

“The phase I’m on, love, I wouldn’t believe it either,” he raps. “I’d be like, ‘JAY-Z’s a cheater,’ I wouldn’t listen to reason either/All I know is he’s a felon, how is he sellin’?/Weed, the Caliva brothers, deep down, I believe you love us, huh/Feast your eyes, the piece unique, it’s sapphire/Rappers liars, I don’t do satire/Neither I nor my wrist move mockingly/Y’all spend real money on fake watches, shockingly/They put me on lists with these n-ggas inexplicably/I put your mansion on my wall, are you shittin’ me?”

The Blueprint legend touched on the 1997 death of The Notorious B.I.G. and rap supergroup The Commission that never came to fruition. Before Biggie’s death, Hov planned on forming the group with Biggie, Diddy, Lance ‘Un’ Rivera, Lil’ Cease and Charli Baltimore

“I blew bird money, y’all talkin’ Twitter feed,” he continues. “We got different Saab stories, save your soliloquies/They like, ‘If BIG was alive, Hov wouldn’t be in his position’/If BIG had survived, y’all would have got The Commission/Hov was gon’ always be Hov/It ’twas the universe will ’cause Allah said so, and now I’m here.”

    1. Jay-Z’s verse was below average compared to Pusha T’s and an epic fail compared to Jay-Z’s older verses. He’s not even trying anymore. Okay I get. He was great but let’s face it, he’s not as great as he once was and it’s ok but stop trying to say he’s the absolute Greatest because he’s absolutely not.

        1. That Jay verse was weak as hell and I’m a Jay-Z fan. You could tell he put the minimum amount of effort into this one compared to their last collaboration.

      1. He was flowing..it sounds different but now more so than ever you have to actually pay attention to what he is saying because you will miss a lot of things on a casual listen.

    2. Hawaiian Punch is retarded cuz Hova’s verse was straight Booty. Maybe Jigga might actually need start writing rhymes if this keeps being the end result. But I understand where Punch might be coming from I guess, compared to them GayTL rappers who only talk about pounding each other, doing drugs, and clothes, at least Jay raps about real shit.

    3. Wtf pusha killed jay-z on this record? What are people talking about? Jay verse good but pushas is straight fire

      1. I used to think that until I remember all of the legends that are still alive and how the game still became what it is. New rappers don’t respect the OGs

    4. Everything gets overblown now. If something is decent it gets praised as ‘classic’ and ‘greatest of all time!’, and if something is weak it’s ‘Go and kill yourself for making this trash!’. Everyone is so reactionary with no real objectivism, they just defend the people they ‘like’ and trash the people they ‘don’t like’, without ever giving it any honest analysis. Peace.

    5. JAY VERSE WAS ONLY ON HERE FOR THE OPTICS. LOVE JAY BUT THIS VERSE WAS COOL AT BEST. IT WAS WHATEVA WHATEVA.

    6. Biggest Hov fan in the universe…this was just cool from both of them. And that’s ok, everything doesn’t need to be the best shit ever. The beats kinda weird so their flows are choppy but it’s a bop, its cool. And that’s it lol.

    7. Fuck overrated celebrities. Listen to DOOM, Tim Dog, Homeboy Sandman, Opio and other MCs says:

      Jay-Z is mediocrity itself.

    8. Them hyping this verse up only makes it worse, especially considering it’s not great. It’s a ok verse, average imo. I thought Pusha verse was better. Jay is one of the dopest to do it no doubt. But this is part of a attempt at media manipulation when these famous people come out and try to get us to buy into something just because they say it. Some people fall for it, I’m just not the type to.

    9. This songs makes me think Pusha T album is going to be another let down by him. I expecting more quality when they announce this song.

    10. Punch needs to go listen to Gibbs, Krit, Larry June, Akeem Ali, Smino, Saba, Nick Grant, Perico, Sandy Benjamin, Ace hood.

    11. Trash verse… trash record… and who is TDE’S PUNCH which is a trash trapper? Folks come on. Just because it is Jay Z and billionaire status, TDE’S PUNCH licks his balls. This record is complete trash homie!

      1. Only an Op… bots would say things like this in comments. And I’m sure it’s to plant these type of ideas in your minds that hip-hop with substance and real lyricism is wack.
And I’d have to agree with Punch. I’ve been saying what he said for the past 15yrs. Majority of the so-called hip-hop music out now and theses formulaic ass artists out now are quality lacking stick talkin’ trash. Same story different narrator.

    12. For a moment I thought they were referring to mediocrity in life but of course if it’s Jay and it’s posted on this site it could never be that meaningful

    13. The song was kinda mid at best, pharrel could have came harder maybe it has to grow on me. but when you got jay money you can brag different, It makes the verse hit harder, when you know he actually has painting on his wall that cost more that iggas mansions, its a bar

    14. If rap was the nba jay is definitely in the jordan on the wizards or lebron right now era. while nas is more Embid was out for a while but now putting up mvp numbers

    15. Stop licking Jay Z balls every one! Please!!! Those mouths of yours got to be salty by now… Gwizzzz… Stop licking them!!! Please….

    16. People on here trying to act like this track isn’t some heat. Me personally I’m not into the expensive watch rhymes but I can see the club going up once dj presses play on this one. at least it’s not some generic sounding gucci mane yo gotti trap bs

    17. I’ll never understand it, Jay-Z is the most over -rated rapper ever. Been spitting sub par snoozers his whole career. Yet has a million dudes sucking his nuts.

      1. Blows? The most successful rap artist on many levels blows? GTFOH. He’s your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper…yet he blows. People just out here hating for no dam reason.

    18. I wish i had the kind of success tjat Jay Z has. The kind that makes so many people bitter and hurt ??. Haters ???

    19. If Jay Z rhymed suck my penis there would be so many grown men between his legs.. This record is trash as well as the rhymes. Complete trash!

    20. Bend over Jay Z, so they can lick your butthole! TDE has a big tongue for you! That rhyme is trash…hahahahaa

    21. What’s funny is how many of you are jumping to diss him about a song you supposedly don’t like. LOL

    22. It’s interesting.. How are glorifying 50 year old man still talking about cocaine in his rap songs the song is weak Pharrell already said he’s not about that street life is the record is trash
