“Straight Outta Compton” Producer Calls Oscar Nominations “Embarrassing”

Will Packer, Straight Outta Compton’s executive producer isn’t too happy with the recently released list of Oscar Award Nominations.

His film was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, but none of the actors or those who were calling the shots on set will receive the academy’s recognition. It’s just one of numerous movies featuring a majority black cast that was snubbed by the Oscars and thus prompting the #‎OscarsSoWhite hashtag going around on social media.

Taking to Facebook Packer ripped the Academy for it’s lack of cultural representation and said they can do better.

“To my Academy colleagues, WE HAVE TO DO BETTER [sic]. Period,” he wrote. “The reason the rest of the world looks at us like we have no clue is because in 2016 it’s a complete embarrassment to say that the heights of cinematic achievement have only been reached by white people. I repeat — it’s embarrassing.”

He also solidified his bond with those tweeting about #OscarsSoWhite. “To my #‎OscarsSoWhite folks who are angry at the absurd lack of diversity highlighted yet again by this year’s Oscar noms. Trust me, I get it,” he wrote.

Beast of No Nation’s Idris Elba, Creed‘s Michael B. Jordan, Concussion‘s Will Smith and Star Wars‘ John Boyega all did not receive nominations from the Oscars, aside from those in Straight Outta Compton.

    1. We talking about Straight Out Compton? what was so great about the movie that deserved a Oscar nod? The story line? The acting? It was a good movie but nothing incredible and Oscar worthy, its not a race thing just the truth, and I’m black by the way

    2. Straight Outta Compton was a good movie. The acting was good, the storyline was good. Are there better movies out there? Of course, but when you compare it to the movies that were made last year I think it’s just as good as most if not better.

      1. I agree great movie, but no A list actors or acting that was Oscar worthy, should be glad that a biopic about a gangster rap music group did the numbers that it did

    3. black people staying mad that more white people like acting and screenwriting. go to any casting call and tell me how many white people are there vs. everybody else. go take a poll of scriptwriters slaving away for years, tell me how many are white vs. asian. people can’t handle whit exceptionalism in ANY WAY. wanna know the truth? straight outta compton was decent, but nothing special. it was an utterly average music biopic, same as any other biopic that has ever been released (including sports and celebrity.) they’re all the same, they all have pretty much the same rhythem too. straight outta compton didn’t deserve anything special but people are freaking out.

    4. If you’re going to complain about racism and being left out then mention who you think you should replace or else you are just bitching. There are 5 spots in most categories and a shit load more white actors doing it , as below says. The NWA flick was a good biopic but you know, it’s not like the heist beating gkmc. it’s easy to play the card

    5. Yes, a movie that uses an absurd amount of the n-word and m-fer definitely deserves at least a nomination. I mean the storyline and dialog are so fresh and innovative. This movie displayed and unmatched level of intelligence that left me feeling inspired and learned.

    6. How is a black person supposed to play a 15th century sailor or something? Most of the films that get nominated for Oscars are period pieces. Black people don’t have a long history in America because of oppression. If you go back 50 years, every role for a black person will have something to do with oppression. When it comes to winning Oscars, white people have an unfair advantage.

      1. Sidney portier, James Earl Jones, Dorthy Dangerige, Cisly Tyson and Lou Gosset Jr are black actors and actresses who received Oscars for playing dignified roles in the 40’s 50’s and 60’s point being blacks weren’t just playing the roles of oppression

      2. you’re ignorant as shit. Every “Period Piece” portraying Egyptians, Indians, Middle Eastern, Italians, Jesus all cast white people, if you can white wash movies then there should be NO PROBLEM with casting any race for any role across the board

      3. “NO PROBLEM with casting any race for any role across the board.” Are you serious? Are you not concerned with authenticity at all? You’re ignorant calling them ‘Indians’ firstly. And your examples do not work. A Native American looks more like a white person than someone with black skin. So you would also agree with Solomon Northup being played by Brad Pitt? I hope you’re not involved in casting.

    7. I have watched straight outta Compton and I think that movie don’t deserve any nomination in the first place. .but at the time..fact is, the Grammy snubbed the black race this time no doubt.

    8. otr, an unfair historical advantage? Aw too bad. How you want to fix it? Lie now or somehow travel back in time?

    9. WHINE WHINE WHINE. I SWEAR BLACK FOLKS STAY BITCHING AND CRYING. GRAB A FUCKING TISSUE. BLOW YA NOSE. DRY YA EYES AND QUIT BEING PUSSYS.

    10. This is the stuff that pisses me off. If there is actual discrimination I am all for fighting it. Instead we have people b*tching about not getting enough awards. It was nominated for best screenplay but that’s not good enough for him? Here’s the thing, black people only make up 13% of the population so yes, a lot of times you’re gonna see just white faces. That in itself is not a sign of discrimination, it’s just math. Spike Lee’s upset too? When has he made a movie worth an Oscar? White Men Can’t Jump? How many HUGE movies has DiCaprio been in and he’s never won an Oscar. Imagine if he were black. omg. And to the person saying fuck white people, you sound like an idiot.

      1. black people just cry affirmative action all the way to the top of hollywood. there are some great talent in black people both in music and movies…

but this crying sh!t has to stop. bunch of crybabies

      2. Spike Lee movies worth Oscar nominations- Malcolm X, Do The Right Thing…he had nothing to do with White Men Can’t Jump…idiot!

    11. OTR, how is a black person supposed to play a 15th century sailor? I don’t know but surely you’re not gonna blame white people for that. America wasn’t even close to being a country and no one was preventing Africans from building boats. African countries have been at war with themselves for ages. It’s sad but true. Not much has come out of there that has impacted the modern age since Egypt. Whose fault is that?
