Statik Selektah never received credit for his work on what many now consider to be Kanye West’s magnum opus — that’s according to a close affiliate of his.

On Tuesday (November 13), Termanology and Paul Wall joined Math Hoffa for an interview on My Expert Opinion. During the chat, Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy came up, prompting Term to shed light on a fellow local’s unsung contributions to the record.

“Statik [Selektah] did two beats on Dark Twisted Fantasy,” he explained. “He didn’t get credit for them, but he did them. He did ‘Lost In The World’ and one other one. He did the drums in the studio with Kanye, and he said when they passed the credits in, his name wasn’t on the list.”

He added: “I remember one of the beats I picked, and [Statik] was like, ‘Yo, you can’t have that beat ’cause it’s going on Kanye’s shit. And I’m like, ‘Alright! Hell yeah, get it. Get it, my bro.’ And then when the shit came out, I remember he was heartbroken. And he’s like, ‘Aw fuck it, you can have that beat now ’cause they didn’t give me my credit.’

“So we ended up using the beat […] I’m not coming up here to shit on Kanye. It’s just the industry’s like that, right? You got 10 cats working on a beat. Sometimes, people forget who did what.”

Though the Massachusetts beatmaker didn’t get his dues for contributing to the Yeezy boss’s 2010 hit record, he has since worked with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Earlier this year, he enlisted industry heavyweights such as Logic, Joey Bada$$ and several Wu-Tang Clan members to appear on his latest album, Round Trip, which dropped over the summer.

One of the album’s highlights is its opening track, which features De La Soul’s Posdnuos paying tribute to his late rap comrade, Trugoy The Dove.

On “Round Trip, (For Dave),” Plug 1 shares how he’s been feeling about losing his former groupmate while assuring fans that the tragic passing doesn’t mean he won’t make music anymore.

My brother left on his return ticket so the pieces of our heart/ I guess some were left to picket/ His round trip journey returned him to the source/ So most would think we been derailed off the course/ But, no matter how sad, the fire in our eyes can’t be doused out/ But tears, 30-plus years will back us,” he raps over the emotional piano loop.
