Saigon Clarifies Recent Comments About Negative Messages In Hip Hop, Previews “Rap Vs. Real” Single

This holiday weekend, rapper Saigon released the latest update in a developing story from last week. The veteran New York emcee was quoted by SOHH for comments criticizing the message of rappers including Rick Ross. The quoted included, Saigon saying, “[Rick Ross is] rapping about selling kilos of cocaine and selling drugs. This is what he’s about, this whole lifestyle saying he’s so rich and he eats shrimp every night, and y’all support this shit? Y’all broke and poor and your family’s about to get kicked out.”

After the story published, Saigon responded, claiming the comments were taken out of context. SOHH responded this weekend, releasing the audio of Saigon’s interview.

While touring in Germany, Saigon has now responded by video, explaining his purpose in the states. The rapper began a seven-plus minute video admitting, “I’m getting a lot of backlash from being very outspoken.”

Sai recalled his three-year-old daughter recently inquiring about a star rapper’s name. “This is no disrespect to Nicki Minaj or whateva, but it’s the fact that it’s so sad that in America, through Hip Hop – something we created through our struggle as Black people, my three-year-old daughter is inquisitive about what a ‘menage’ is or what it means. Because mainstream America is making a lot of money off of sellin’ sex.”

Commenting on his relationship with Rick Ross, Saigon explained why he contacted the Miami, Florida-based rapper after the story published. “I don’t know him-know him, but me and him have a rapport. So I went on Twitter and I @’ed him; I don’t ever @ nobody,” “I said, ‘Look man, I got nothin’ but respect for you. Do you. Feed your family. But I’m in my lane, so I gotta do what I gotta do regardless.”

In the vlog, Sai clarified his point about who is behind the messages in mainstream Rap music. “It ain’t just Rick Ross, first of all. It ain’t even Rick Ross; Rick Ross is an artist. It’s [Chairman and CEO of Sony Entertainment] Doug Morris. It’s Universal Records. It’s Sony Records. It’s Radio One. It’s Clear Channel. These [artists are] pawns. These people is pawns to the same people who enslaved us,” he stated. Sony Red distributed Saigon’s 2011 release, The Greatest Story Never Told, which was released through Suburban Noize Records.

The rapper also responded to crirticism he’s faced since the story broke. “The people goin’ against me right now more than anybody are my own people,” Saigon said, believed to be referring to Black people. “Everybody else knows I’m right.”

Before previewing his new single from his forthcoming album, “Rap Vs. Real,” Saigon acknowledged his outspoken nature to be his purpose. “This is why I was put on this earth, man. I’m Malcolm X, yes. I’m Martin Luther King, yes. I’m Tupac, yes. So shoot me, try to assassinate my character, call me an idiot, do what you want. That shit don’t matter, ’cause it’s just getting started.”

    1. he’s a hypocrite.

hip hop has had sex, drugs, gangs and murder since before he came in the game and will have that shit long after he leaves the game.

the media as a whole promotes that shit, not just hip hop.

    2. A ‘mnage’ is TWO people being together. A mnage is not 3 people being together. Mnage–trois is THREE poeple being together. So Saigon is making a mistake there. He was confused between ‘mnage’ and ‘mnage trois’. Too bad!

    3. Correction: A ‘menage’ is TWO people being together. A menage is not 3 people being together. A ‘menage trois’ is three people being together. So Saigon is making a big mistake here. Too bad!

    4. STFU fake “Brooklyn” jail bum asshole. I’ll give Saigon $100 for him to talk about Frederick Douglass or Ralph Ellison in an interview– oh but he can’t, because he’s too fucking DUMB, yet he’s flexing his steroid bloated tits calling out others as “ignorant.”

Stupid nigga is as stupid nigga does– Saigon gets caught, again, and again, and again. RETARD.

    5. Damn Sai, it hurts me to say this but you looking like a real bitch right now. How you gonna say “I’m against all these niggas that are promoting selling crack etc.” in one breath and then say “I ain’t got no problem with Ross, he’s an artist” in the next? You obviously got a problem with what Ross represents so ACT LIKE IT NIGGA! You don’t have to personally attack the dude but don’t add the man on twitter trying to be all nice and shit and licking his ass, that’s retarded. Stop being a pussy about it. You say it’s sad that you have to explain what a minaj is to your daughter, then proceed to say you ain’t got no problem with Nicki Minaj. WHAT THE FUCK? You looking mad dumb right now. I actually like this dude’s music and I’m a big fan but this shit makes him look like a fucking pussy who’s scared of stepping on feet. You talk about the black community having a lack of courage and yet you’re displaying that lack of courage yourself with all this ass-kissing you’re doing. Yeah, it’s not JUST about Ross but don’t act like you cool with what he does. If you really want to voice your discontent about the state of hip hop, yeah you gotta attack the corporations but you also gotta go at Ross, go at Wayne, go at Nicki cause it’s their voices that your daughter is ultimately hearing on the radio. Don’t try to act all cool with these dudes while talking shit about what they do on your records, what kind of shit is that? BE A MAN! I’ma cop that record regardless when it comes out though. LOL.

      1. He k new what he was doing when he mentioned Ross, now it don’t mean he has to run a fake rap beef.

    6. I DON’T UNDERSTAND IT.

he’s dissing Ross and them in his new single and he talks about shutting their money down, BUT at the same time he is saying that he’s cool with Ross ????

      1. he’s half stepping. I don’t respect it.

If you’re gonna voice your opinion, then go all in.

    7. ‘Saigon’ is Vietnamese for ‘I just Ethered myself.’

Also, in the history of black art, sociology and education, what the fuck has Saigon offered?

Dude tries to pass off his own ignorance about everything but jail on others, meanwhile, ya’ll think he reads W.E.B. DuBois? James Baldwin? Hell, even Bill Cosby!!

    8. Whenever stories like this break people pay attention to the minutia and not the real point

What Sai said about the industry is the truth, he was right to back down from Ross because the situation is bigger then one mediocre artist and rather then have people concentrate on some cornball “OMG SAI JUST DISSED ROSS ITS BEEF TIME NUKKKAAAA!!!!” bullshit, they should be paying attention to the real enemy, the old white men who allow him to do what he does

    9. I enjoyed saigon’s music for a while, and was excited when greatest story dropped. But then when I realized this guy hasn’t read a single book since he made greatest story like 7 years ago and hasn’t progressed at all as a person, even though he does nothin but preach. I agree with what you say, but if you want anyone to take you serious:
      A) take a page from immortal technique and better yourself man, hit them books before you try and speak heavy knowledge
      B) don’t flip flop on this shit and try to make piece with rick ross once a couple ignorant people put pressure on you
      C) don’t worry about pleasin ignorant rap fans. there is a market for intelligent rap, but those people aren’t gonna be the ones that scream at you over a rick ross diss.

    10. Malcom X ?

you’re the complete opposite of Malcom. Malcom would be proud of niggas like Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj rolling wealth and being part of the upper class tax bracket.

Malcom preached to get your money BY ANY MEANS but do it with peace.

      1. So Malcom would be fine with rappers degrading black people by promoting drugs, sex and violence. Get the fuck out of here fool.

    11. “Because mainstream America is making a lot of money off of sellin’ sex.”

Tell us something we don’t know. You can’t have it both ways. Criticize rappers for their content, but then turn around and people see your albums have the very same elements. Just not done in a way that generates any sales or interest.

      1. Saigon is retarded; listen to his SEXIST contribution to the Stoupe solo album and see how little credibility he has…

… No wonder he’s touring with LAUGHTERHOUSE.

    12. Malcom X rolled with drug dealers, he wasn’t against that shit at all.

Pac, was a bllod who rapped about murder and sex more than positive shit.

MLK ? lmao keep it real Sai.

      1. Malcolm wasn’t against drugs by the time he joined the Nation of Islam??? What the FUCK are you talking about lmao

    13. Here we go with this “Black Community” bullshit. I’m a black guy but I find it annoying when people always try to put us in a box and only think that we can be poor or come from the hood….And he’s talking about setting an example for his daughter…HE is supposed to do that not a rapper. People always want somebody to set an example for THEIR children…artists aren’t supposed to be role models.

    14. Arrogance, Ignorance, Jealousy and Bitterness– wow Brian Carenard, aka “Saigon,” really is the the “complete” rapper…

Completely Fucking Wack… Nigga will blame everything on everyone except his own Dumbass Self.

    15. Hahaha, this nigga is so fucking ridiculous, it’s unreal. Typical bitch move. After he failed to reach a larger audience, he’s trying to hop back on ‘real’-train to gain the attention of a few lame fucks who get all wet as soon as a underground rapper mentions the mainstream in a bad way. Rappers always try to get back on that ‘I’m so real’ shit after they failed to sell out. I hope Ross doesn’t even respond, so that nigga can continue to ether himself everytime he opens his mouth.

    16. “THIS VIOLENCE AND SEX IN RAP NEEDS TO STOP. BUT ROSS, YOU CAN KEEP DOING YOU. I RESPECT YOU. WAIT, NO I DON’t. WAIT. UGHHHHH”

    17. ‘These niggaz do vocal booth crimes, I shot niggaz multiple times’

Yeah right. LOL. Fuck this nigga.

      1. fuck you for not getting it. he wasn’t questioning it. but why does saigon have the nerve to call out other rappers when he himself brags about that lifestyle? idiots.

      2. if u guys actually listened to his music then u would realize that he doesnt brag about it. when he does rap about it he’s rhyming about what he actually did though.
“dont make the mistakes ive made, go to school get good grades, dont worry about trying to get paid, cause at the end of the day the only thing real is whatever still there after the money go away”

    18. it gives me headache listening to this three faces mothafucka

      he’s always switchin his shit

all his talks are falling apart cause he can’t stand by his own words

results ? no one believe you anymore

plus you acting like a revolutionary dude just to get all eyes on you cause aint relevant anymore

      fuck you

and the next time just shut the fuck up

      1. TRUTH!!

The funny thing is Brian/Saigon “thinks” (and I used the word very loosely) he’s “playing” (ditto) the media with this shit but the only person being played is himself.

ANY extra attention he gets from his latest jealous emo hissy fit will only backfire when folks hear just how fucking cornball and mediocre his music is. Take away the Just Blaze beats and the guy’s straight out of BUMVILLE, to where he’ll soon return, I’m sure.

      2. Well now that he has the attention he has to release some decent music and if you don’t like Saigon or his music cool because last I checked nobody is forcing you to listen to it or listen to him talk just go listen to songs and artists you like and comment on those

      3. how about u shut the fuck up!
he don’t give a shit about being relevant.
bet he’s eatin better than ur stupid ass….

    19. I don’t know about you but I look forward to a life without drugs, murder and black on black crime or better yet crime period.

      Peace Sai.

      1. Support this emo douche how? His music is garbage, his “show” horrible and even 50 Cent is a better “actor.” If Just Blaze wasn’t bored a decade ago nobody would even pay attention to “Saigon”–
wait wait, was Brian in Viet Nam? Heavy man!!

    20. This stupid motherfucker isn’t even Martin Lawrence, forget Martin Luther King… Keep talking Brian, you only make yourself look like that much greater a bitter, jealous prick.

I’m sure Cornel West and Bill Cosby, however, have a lot to learn from you.

      1. For you and any other brothers reading, HHDX’ demographic is majority Caucasian teenage males, never forget that. Yes some of them type in blackface, so don’t be confused. Words like fucktard, the gay comments, douche, prick, dickhead are indicators.

    21. Saigon is a rapper that I respect a lot. and after all these, I respect him even more.
Older conscious rapper don’t have the balls to say Sai for the fear of being called a hater. But Saigon did.
Saigon is putting his rap career on the line to speak up with the truth yet everyone laughs at him.

Black america is indeed fucked up.

    22. “but you have to understand the politic side of rap so he has to apolegize for saying his true feelings”

You make a good point. Rappers say things out of left field all the time then back pedal, seemingly to remain in the good graces of the hip hop community. It shows a lack of focus cause you never hear Country singers talking smack about each other. It’s a business, and if Ross knows how to sell an image, whether based on lies or the truth, then more power to him. Theoritically, Saigon should have the same opportunities if he’s handling his business right.

    23. dudes a sick artist but phony as fuck, speak the truth son n dont take it back makes him loook sooooft

    24. Hardly anything real about the game anymore, it’s who you know what will determine your success with a whole lot of bullshit programming!

      1. do you even know what Malcolm X stood for or what he advocated to be making such baseless comments

    25. Sai shoulda stuck by his comments. Fuck if other niggas, Ross included, don’t like it. So what he did grimey shit in the past? He learned from it and is trying to put out music to get our communities out of the bullshit we’re in. If u got a problem with his comments, his attitude, then don’t listen to him. His interviews, his music, fall back off all of that. Continue to listen to the bullshit mainstream radio feeds u everyday.

    26. If you do not understand what this is all about, either you are a whiteboy who doesn’t care and are talking sh*t, or a Black who is so into your savage pursuit of happiness, you can’t see it.

In summary, this is deeper and much more cryptic than Ross & Saigon, they were doing the same thing with blaxploitation movies in the 70’s. Bruce Lee even fought the system, they wanted Chuck Norris to win.

    27. It’s funny how most you supposed hip-hop fans start hating on someone trying to speak a real message.

It’s as though all you wanna hear is some dumb ass rapper talking about booty and selling kg’s. You can’t handle anything that requires any intellectual thought.

Whether or not Saigon executed this right is a secondary and less important argument. What you need to be thinking about is why you prefer to hear raps about fake drug dealers and people throwing money in the air, rather than real stories.

      Right?

    28. Its true what Saigon is saying, if you listen to early hip hop before the big companies knew how to control the industry, you can hear the truth and honesty in the music. Now everything sounds the same and there is no originality or verity in the music.

    29. Big companies also master and remaster these recording really lousy so its unbearable to listen to an entire album. I wonder if these artist know this?

    30. This nigga keep ethering himself every time he talk out both sides of his mouth. If he got a problem with thenigga Ross sau it. Don’t subliminal that shit then say u cool wit em. This nigga is what’s wrong wit the biz. Niggas tryin to be cool wit cats even though they can’t stand him. Anyway thus jigga just tryin to create a buzz cyz he knows he irrelevant. If he really cared about hs community why not go after a rapper without a buzz. He know Rozay and nicki hot so he following the paper trail. Like jay said we don’t believe you you need more people.

      Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    31. fuck diz sell out nigga. Greatest Story Never Told was a career suicide …. diz fake ass nigga dissin a real nigga? Rozay iz a real drug dealer from da streets, real gangsta juss liek me. fuck dis pop rapper Sai! u aint shit. Rozay can outrap your ABC rhymes. faggots. swag

      1. Rozay does make good music, its not lyrically deep but it is entertaining. As far as for drug dealers I really dont have respect for them just like I dont have respect for the CEO of Sony music. Greedy people just use there product to sell out our brothers, sisters, moms, and dads.

    32. fuck that snitch azz nigga RICK ROSS his music sucks balls and is for all u bouncy bubblegum azz niggaz!!!!SAIGON is the truth and the greatest story never told lyrically is better than 99 percent of the shit that comes out.SAI would knock this nigga out so fast if he wanted to but fuck it he rather go make some sick music as far as his new single is concerned it is lacking alot and i hope is album doesnt sound as crappy as the first singlesai might be goin another direction with this album either way fuck u rick ross lil wayneand young anybody

    33. I don’t listen to Rick Ross or Saigon…but what Saigon is saying here is 100% truth. Let’s face it…music about sex, drugs, and money is pushed harder than the up-lifting, socially conscious music. Anyone who says otherwise is completely brainwashed. A lot of people are missing the point. They like Rick Ross, so they say “Man FUCK Saigon…he’s wack”…but they’re missing the over-all commentary that he was making about the state of the industry. Rick Ross was just an example that he was using. Just look at the state of Hip-Hop before Hip-Hop became big business. You had groups like Public Enemy that were HUGE…and they actually had a message. Now look at the state of Hip-Hop today. Who are the biggest artists? Common? Mos Def? Kweli? The Roots? Zion I? CYNE? Nah…most people have never even heard of CYNE (sadly). The biggest “Hip-Hop” artists are Jeezy, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Drake, & Nicki Minaj. Jeezy and Rick Ross are all about the drug game and hustling. Outside of a few songs like the one he did with Robin Thicke about Katrina, Wayne mostly talks about stupid shit or is objectifying women. Nicki Minaj sounds like rapping Lady Gaga with Tourette’s Syndrome lol. It’s sad that these are Hip-Hop’s biggest names.

And let’s face it, this kind of stuff IS damaging to the African-American community. A lot of artists don’t want to take responsibility for the things coming out of their mouths. They equate being a rapper to being an actor…and place the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the parents. Well, I have a newsflash for folks: It takes a village to raise a child…and kids DO look up to rappers as role models…despite the fact that most rappers don’t want to be. The environment that the kid is growing up in has as much to do with the kids growth as what the parents are teaching them…and many artists are flooding the urban environment with negative ideas and imagery. Kids see these guys with all of their money, and say “maybe if I do what he’s doing or talk about what he’s talking about then I can be rich too…and get out of this situation”. That’s why most up-and-coming hip-hop artist verses and freestyles consist of them talking about how many people they’ve shot/will shoot or how many keys they’ve moved/will move. Because that’s what they’re learning from the top Hip-Hop artists nowadays like Ross and 50 Cent…and 85% of these kids are lying about what they’re doing. Please…I DEFY someone to tell me that I’m wrong. The only positive Black role model that gets any radio play nowadays is Lupe Fiasco.

I heard Jadakiss compare what he was doing to “Terminator 2″…like a robot from the future is the same thing as a dude from the hood talking about selling drugs and killing n*ggas all willy nilly. One thing is science fiction, the other thing happens somewhere in the country DAILY. And the difference is, with movies, people can SEE the actors. They know for a fact that these people are being payed to act out a story. With rappers, it’s becoming increasingly harder to tell whether or not someone is speaking the truth. Honest expression is becoming a lost art in Hip-Hop.

      1. I agree..most rappers selling poing is that THEY REALLY ARE ABOUT WHAT THEY TALK ABOUT. Then when they get arrested for something…they yelllin they ain’t guilty. Which is it? Are you about it or not?

    34. All of a sudden we’re supposed to ignore this dude said along the lines of “Ross is my nigga” and then six hours later does a 180 on that shit?

No you know what? Fuck this shit. Always some back-against-the-wall nigga starting to spout off bout the black community and what’s real and what isn’t. First off, great example there Sai. You wanna stand by your words, show it and don’t be a god damn turncoat who meant to have some sort of “deeper message”. We done heard this shit before, from Nas, T.I. The Game, a slew of underground rappers, all niggas tellin us at some point about how the game isn’t real or we need to reassert ourselves. And what happens? Exactly.

Self-righteous bitch niggas outta realize we made ourselves this way, and every day we do things that keep helping to the cause. How many of us buy conscious hip hop albums here? Go on I’ll wait. Probably some of us legit do, but the majority don’t. And we’ll still co – sign niggas who rap about what they not because we don’t know their lives. Nor are we supposed to. This is all just entertainment and it ain’t worth tryna be above the system, above the example like you seeing the truth or something.

Saigon wants to tell us something? Drop some bangin music saying that and not acting like a bitch nigga, that might help.

    35. SAIGON IS SPEAKIN THE TRUTH! PROPS TO HIM UNFORTUNATELY STUFF GOT TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT ON BLOGTV BUT RAP VS REAL IS GONNA BE DOPE

    36. HOLD ON!
He’s cool with officer ricky even though he admits ricky is one of the artists that put hip hop in a negative perspective??

      please answer!

      1. Saigon himself puts Hip Hop in a VERY negative perspective, just look at his life. God damn, I hate those people who went to jail and feel like they could better the whole world after they served their time.

    37. “Bruce Lee even fought the system, they wanted Chuck Norris to win”

      Chuck could speak English.

      1. Applause to you, you posted the most asinine comment on this thread. So him knowing English, instead of the art better than a master of it is better?

        Congratulate yourself.

    38. yeah whatever nigga. u blew ur last chance. nigga is to worried about hurtin peoples feelings or that he might lose some radio spins. he spoke the truth and then he back tracked cuz hes a coward

    39. I know this nigga did not just go in on a nigga, get people to say his name and then proceed to fellate and suck on ross’s titties. He stated an issue gave examples of who was a main factor to later retract a factual statement ,why? are you afraid that rick ross might arrest you? or are you afraid that Big sean might stick out his bird chest and smack you?Are you afraid that they will not play your hits on hot 97? should have stuck by your words hoe boys get no love on this side b.

    40. Music is entertainment but what people gotta understand in a way a reality cause people(phony people)imitate what they see on tv so hip hop is influential whether we like it or not we call it entertainment but yet on the flipside alot of people behavior today is cause media music fashion etc so people gotta take some responsibility and be mindful to whats going on cause is sad when you got a whole bunch of broke muthafuckers out here trying to be celebrity when struggling under miminum wage…

    41. And another thing the black community gotta break the cycle cause that what the government to put there agendas to our people to weaken us from breaking the on going cycle of being stuck and not having our independence as people…

    42. Saigon in the words of Biggie “we don’t believe you, you need more people”
you said what you said and as a man you should have stood by it..the first time. all this backtracking, explaining and yakking is just like copping a plea. what every happened to people saying what they think and sticking to it….why everyone quick to fold like a chair? And niggas wonder why women would rather date other women….niggas is soft like tissue nowadays….

      1. LOL.. that’s real talk. I like Saigon in general, but dude has issues and it’s weak that he back tracked the way he did. He’s not no Tupac, people will not ride for Saigon. He needs to stop talking and get back to making dope music..

    43. “So him knowing English, instead of the art better than a master of it is better?”

No. Lee was probably the better fighter, but in terms of marketing to the movie going public, Norris had it easier. Lee lost the starring role in Kung Fu because the execs said his accent was to thick.

    44. Rap music isn’t any different than any other entertainment. There’s violence and sex everywhere movies, books, Tv. We has humans like violence n sex, not just black people. And as for rap music showing blacks in a negative light…if it was rap music it’ll be something else people don’t like about us. 50 years ago rap music wasn’t around and they thought we weren’t equal, separate bathrooms, drinking fountain, and what not. 100 years we were 3/5 of a human. There wasn’t any rap music back than degrading us. We’re the problem, its the people who have hate for us, they’re the ones with the problems. Now I’m not saying we’re perfect because everyone is fucked up in their own way. But we need to worry about educating ourselves. Start raising our kids right. I couldn’t careless about rap music making ‘us’ look bad but i do care about the crime rate.
