Russell Simmons wasn’t exactly thrilled with Tiffany Haddish’s idea of a police brutality protest. In an Instagram post earlier this week, the breakout Girls Trip actress claimed she was going to keep wearing fur until something changes.
“‘I’m gonna wear fur every day until the police stop killing black people,” Haddish says in the video. “When police stop killing Black people, I’ll stop wearing fur. It’s my new protest. So sorry PETA, don’t be mad at me! Be mad at the police!”
The Def Jam Recordings co-founder and longtime vegan joined the discussion, suggesting harming other living creatures won’t solve the problem.
“White supremacy is a disease that takes on many forms and has many symptoms, the abuse of other beings will not address that,” he wrote. “I love you Tiffany but I wish you could reconsider this route of protest.”

“Practicing loving all Gods creatures,” he commented. “some of that love could include a wake up to the oppressors. Be strong way. things like ‘wake up white people and all people’ while u sit idle. black people are dying. Your silence is LOUD and unless you too speak up with me you are guilty of all that your brothers and sisters do by not speaking you [allow it] to happen.
“Is why Malcolm [X] said the white man is the devil no individuals but the collective actions are horrible. Each individual of all races should fight police brutality and each who has no voice is guilty of collaborative …”
Simmons eventually empathized with Haddish’s position and posted an Instagram post elaborating on his stance. Although the Happy Vegan author still considers Haddish’s choice to wear fur “misguided,” he understands why she’s taking this route.
“I received so many calls from my friends in the animal rights community saying why did she choose fur as her form of protest,” he wrote in the caption. “Yes people i agree that the suffering of any of Gods innocent living beings is horrible And un called for ..family please understand ..Hurt people Hurt people The Black community is hurting And they should not feel like they have to go it alone.
“I do agree that in my many times protesting police brutality i have seen the same people who occupied wall street the same people whom i encountered at the women’s march and the same people who i have seen at animal rights events We are the compassionate ones that we are waiting for …we must stand up for each other… Please let’s all be sensitive to ALL suffering and although i think the form of protest is misguided i do acknowledge that it is a call for help ….do you?”

The law isn’t unfairly targeting black men at all. 75% of convicted prisoners in America are black. Facts. They are 15% of the population. There are now more Latinos in the U.S. than blacks. They have less than half the populous in prison. The rate of blacks killing other blacks is FAR greater than any other violent crime demographic. Failing to deal with these FACTS is what perpetuates this issue. Please stop dealing with the fact that cops are shooting blacks, focus on on the fact that black folk are giving them a reason to do so.
