Royce Da 5’9 Uses Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, YG + More For West Coast Rappers – Best Albums Argument

Royce Da 5’9 is a dedicated student of Hip Hop. Even with the Grammy Award nomination and seemingly endless accolades from peers such as Eminem and KXNG Crooked, he diligently studies the craft and tackles the topic any time he gets a chance.

Early Sunday morning (July 11), Royce emphatically stated West Coast artists have a penchant for making superior albums, citing Kendrick Lamar, The Game, YG, Nipsey Hussle, Roddy Ricch, DJ Quik, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Anderson .Paak, Ice Cube and ScHoolboy Q to make his case.

“West Coast artists make the best albums,” he tweeted. “I just realized this. KDot Game YG NIP Roddy Quik Dre Snoop Cube Anderson School Boy Q … Damn.”

He later added Tha Dogg Pound and Warren G.

Of course, the comment section lit up reactions to Royce Da 5’9’s opinion with one person saying, “I thank Suge Knight, Top Dawg and Wack 100 for this,” to which Royce said, “Important men in our culture who are under appreciated due to their reputations preceding them.”

Another person was quick to point out he was “doing the Bay dirty” by only naming Los Angeles-based artists, then tossed Bay Area artists Mac Dre, Jacka, C-Bo, Mac Mall, Andre Nickatina, Too $hort, E-40, Drakeo The Ruler and Cellski into the mix. Others threw in Luniz, Pharcyde, Paris, N.W.A and a laundry list of notable names.

Royce Da 5’9 can be found nerding out about rap and everything in between with Lupe Fiasco on their weekly podcast called The Lupe and Royce Show.

As noted in the description, the show is “half conversation between friends, half interview show, and 100 percent weird. It MIGHT make you think and will definitely make you laugh. Two prolific MCs, one white guy with two first names: What could go wrong?”

Royce Da 5'9 Unleashed An Alcoholic Demon The Second He Accepted A Drink From Dr. Dre

Their most recent episode, which aired on Thursday (July 8), found the duo discussing professional bowling with professional bowler and six-time PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte. Other guests have included NBA legend Baron Davis, actor/author Hill Harper and NFL safety Dough Middleton.

        1. No he was born there. He grew up in Baltimore then moved to the Bay Area after that. He was a kid in NYC, a teenager in MD and SF. Facts.

          1. 2pac is a NY dude like it or not he lived there for 13 yrs. He was in B more for 4yrs and then the Bay at 17. lol

          2. 2pac is a NY dude like it or not he lived there for 13 yrs. He was in B more for 4yrs and then the Bay at 17. lol

    1. So we’re going to mention YG like Mozzy didn’t own the collab album they just did. His discography speaks for himself. Shown a lot of growth lyrically while not turning his back in his core fan base. YG isn’t bad, but Mozzy is easily better.

    2. Nas, Biggie,Jay-z,Wu-tang,Big Pun,Big L,Gangstarr,Kool g rap,Krs1,Rakim,Mobb deep,50 cent,Cormeg I could go on..East coast definitely got the best MC’s I listen to west coast but I east is my favourite.

      1. The BEST artists dont exactly have to have the BEST albums with replay value. Eminem is another example of that

        1. Eminem has to be the most overrated rapper in history. he was nice from 99-03 then completely fell off… he had/has classics but you’re right, they aged terribly. but all eyez on me and soul on ice have aged like wine imo

      2. PAC is from New York you donkey. Hip hop for real hahaha… you don’t know anything about hip hop hipster.

    3. I think the East has put out the best albums historically, but the West has put out great albums consistently besides that dry spell before Game and Kendrick took over.

      1. Those artists he named which have albums most likely have more all around replay value than the East.

    4. Mfs reaching in their replies. E40 is meh, Too $hort is a legend but let’s be real… He sucks. Drakeo the ruler? Why would you mention him in the same post as some straight up Legends? If you’re mad that they didn’t name someone you like, just say that. Not everybody is a legend…. Gtfoh

      1. Putting Drakeo the ruler in the conversation was just as stupid as Royce putting Roddy’s name in there with people he doesn’t come close to at all.

    5. Boogie is dope as well, I think he’s from LA…..But nah Royce, you’re so wrong on this one, Im not going to even attempt to name all the east coast rappers, I’ll miss some and it’s too much to type, now I can see an argument in west coast having better artist and albums NOW, but even then that’s probably reaching or maybe not…..

    6. This shit retarted. It’s meant for this moron not reaching hi p hoo 4 real please. Don’t speak son I’ll embarrass you

    7. Pac is a complicated figure in the game. He’s like the only dude to play for both coasts. Completely inline with the duality of him as a person. I grew up listening to the man. First rapper I ever could actually feel through the speaker. Kendrick,Em,Nipsey,Big, Kanye etc it’s like tey right next to you. That’s talent, passion and desire all hitting as one. Only a few can say that they do that on the mic . Real name no gimmicks

    8. Why is Roddy’s name in the middle of all those? His album is terrible. Get your life together, Royce.

    9. Most of the albums you are talking about are not the flawless ones. Just because cats rap doesn’t mean they are the best judge of what is good music. Pharcyde, Alcoholiks, Souls of Mischief, The Nonce, B.U.M.S, People under the stairs, Ugly Duckling and Encore all have a classic album. Just naming commercial pop albums that sold doesn’t mean they are the best. Name some real shit not everyday shit you heard 1000 x.

      1. So because it’s popular it’s not “real shit”?. You soind dumb af. Has it ever occured to you that sometimes things become popular for a reason?

    10. Am from the south but he’s right they take there time don’t rush album cause they’re hot at that time they focus on quality not quantity you drop 3 or even 2 album n a yr. that’s no quality sport

    11. He not just talk flowing it every thing way its put together the order of the songs everything production not saying of coast or even other city’s shit aint dope but overall the best rap albums come out the LA area Dallas Texas. Straight out the South

      1. Not ever close NY is easily #1 followed by Cali and after that its a mixture of Chi, Detroit, Ohio, NJ, NC. I’m speaking on hip hop not POP or trap music. Trap is all down south and you can have it.

        1. what are you talking about.. are you like 15? ATL has produce Outkast, T.I, Scarface, luda, donald glover just to name a few, even the clipse had southern flavour.
