After years of rhyming, Rakim has cemented himself as one of the most respected rappers of all time. Recently, the emcee was asked about his current favorite emcee during an interview with BlokTV. While he was unsure at first, saying that many rappers are great for various reasons, he finally decided on one. His pick? Jay-Z.
“Taking me out of the equation?” he asked the reporter. “That’s a good question because I look at a lot of different artists for different things. It’s hard to name one. I be shocked when people still hollerin’ at me. But, rap is so diverse right now. You got so many different styles and shit. It’s hard to say one.”
Eventually, though, Rakim went with one name and said that it’s hard not to recognize what Jay-Z has done in the game.
“As far as records, business, if it’s clothing, Jay-Z man. We gotta start respecting those that’s making a large foot print in the game. When you look at what Jay-Z’s doing…That’s a measuring stick for all the young brothers that’s coming out. Don’t do what he’s doing, do as he’s doing. Learn what made him successful. Well we have to agree to disagree I guess. I think Jay-Z has been weak since Reasonable Doubt. Blueprint was HEAVILY overrated with only a few okay songs. What the F*** is a Jay Electronica the mixtape is better than any of JayZ’s albums IMO, so you must not have heard that yet. Joell is clearly better in terms of wordplay, metaphors, and everything else so I just don’t see how you can’t see it. It’s like comparing Elzhi and Common in his prime (1994-2005). Elzhi is good, even gr8, but doesn’t hold a candle to Com at his best.
I respect Rakim’s decision. Jay has done a lot in the rap game during his career. He’s also one of the select few rappers who’s never gone to jail for doing something stupid. As far as his raps go, he’s got some crazy metaphors and, at times, some vague lyrics. He also knows how to put wack wanna-be rappers in their place. So good pick, Rakim.

In 88, 89, 90, and maybe 91, and aside from spitting that fire he has seen a lot in his long career, but its 2010 and Rakim aint exactly rap with that fire since 1991, so these young guys don’t recognize him as the God Mc, unlike J he could not adapt and remain relevant through the years, that’s why these dudes don’t know him, got to respect the fact that he was before their time, KRS1 use to be a great MC as well, but he couldn’t remain through the changing times, and is often considered wack because he’s stuck in the 80’s
