Questlove Recalls First Impression Of A Tribe Called Quest’s “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm”

A Tribe Called Quest’s People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was reissued Friday (November 13) to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of its release.

Count Questlove among the album’s fans.

A Tribe Called Quest’s People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was like nothing I had ever heard,” Questlove says during an interview with Billboard. “It was stylish, funny, jazzy, soulful, smart and everything else. Tribe was socially conscious without being too self-conscious about it. Q-Tip was telling stories and drawing characters with a light touch that went deep, and the samples dug into the most amazing corners of ’70s music.”

The Roots’ drummer also says that he was particularly impressed with the jazz records sampled on the project.

“Tribe colored outside the lines of traditional funk and soul samples,” Questlove says. “They made your parents’ record collection relevant again.”

The People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm reissue features remixes with Pharrell Williams, CeeLo Green and J. Cole.

    1. ATCQ!!! Classic. Midnite Marauders and this album are the best. The infusion of jazz and stream of conscious lyricism of Q Tip were a perfect pairing…. Dope

    2. The lower end theory needs a roll out… Peoples… Was dope… But lower and midnight were the albums the captured the audiences… In retrospect… Peoples… Kinda fit the mode of now.., only true hip hop heads would truly understand
