The Recording Academy appeared to inflame several Hip Hop figures when they axed Kanye West’s performance from the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. Kanye’s “Eazy” collaborator The Game blasted the Academy in an Instagram post and Rap-A-Lot Records founder J. Prince waged war on the Grammys as well, encouraging Drake, Kanye, The Weeknd and Nicki Minaj to join the fight.
“HIP HOP VS. THE GRAMMYS: @champagnepapi, @kanyewest, @theweeknd, @nickiminaj,” Prince wrote in an Instagram post. “The powers that be will be mad at me about this one but FUCK EM! I love the culture! The seed is planted … let’s water it!”
On Wednesday (March 23), TMZ caught up with Quavo at the Los Angeles International Airport who was intrigued by the idea of J. Prince throwing his own concert on Sunday (April 3), the same night as the Grammys.
“Let’s do it,” he said. “We need to make our own rules for those who appreciate the real shit that’s going on in the streets, that appreciate the culture, that appreciate the best new artists. Instead of a freshman class, we need like best new artist in the street whenever they come out. We couldn’t go on freshman class ’cause we was a group. Just shit like that, all these little stipulations … we the creators.”
He added the culture needs, “younger guys tapped in” to decide who’s the best of the best.
Of course, Hip Hop versus the Grammys is nothing new. Public Enemy’s Chuck D has been rapping about the insignificance of a gilded trophy since the 1988 single “Terminator X To The Edge of Panic” from It Takes A Nation of Millions … To Hold Us Back.
“Take a look at his style,” he raps. “Take a check of the sound/Off the record people keep him down/Trick a chick in Miami/Terminator X packs the jams/Who gives a fuck about a Goddamn Grammy/Anyway and I say the D’s defending the mic/Yeah, who gives a fuck about what they like.”
Even so, the 64th Annual Grammy Awards take place on Sunday (April 3) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. As for Kanye, he was banned from performing because of his “disturbing online behavior” that found him targeting everyone from his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend Pete Davidson to D.L. Hughley and The Daily Show host (and master of ceremonies at the Grammys) Trevor Noah.
drake volunteered to leave but it wasn’t over this shit.
Not a legit reason to boycott the grammy’s over them not letting Ye perform. If it’s a live event I can understand their concerns about Ye performing considering his recent social media rants. J.Prince is not being a good leader. You want major artist to boycott the grammy’s, but what about the ones that It might be their first time performing or receiving a award. How selfish is it to want these major artist to boycott something over one aritist?
It’s not pertaining to Ye. It’s a recurring thing. Corporations are no better than colonizing countries.
Yall going to follow the dude that sit in the car with the rapper with the fake gold gun or was it a real gold gun? Who knows. The same guy that was begging NY cats to help on some other NY cats because his lil homey got beat.
So theres no plan for this other than to snub and ‘stick it’s to the Grammys..that’s the only goal or what? Seems like some moves a hater would do idk it has that vibe
Grammys hasn’t been relevant in a decade only time I hear of it is when someone’s whining about it
Okay thanks
The BET awards already exist.
Not even close BET awards are trash and play politics too. It needs to be like the CMA the country folks so big their genre have their own thing. It bet is no different than iheart radio giving out awards.
Nas performing at the grammys I’ll take Nas over everybody combine that is performing at that other show.
Doja Cat made racist Trap music and comments and sh never gets canceled at this he Grammy’s and she looks lik a Crack Ho that can’t sing. Alley cats sound better!
ITS PRETTY NICE TO SEE MEDIOCRITY BANDED TOGETHER.
