When Public Enemy first announced in October that they would be utilizing fans as a resource to fund their $250,000 album, the idea was met with skepticism. According to Billboard.com however, by the end of December, the group had raised $71,000 through Sellaband.com, a website which allows fans to make investments in artist’s projects.
Yet, the success of the fan-funded venture ended there. Since reaching the amount of $71K, the project has lost investors who have taken a total of $4,000 along with them. Although PE has raised far more money than other groups through the website, the amount that each of their fans invests is quite low compared to others, due to unappealing incentives. For example, while a $100 investment offers investors a CD, a credit in the booklet, and an extra CD at half-price, a $250 investment adds in only a Public Enemy limited edition T-shirt.
Since December, Public Enemy has slowed down on updating its Sellaband page. The duo may be struggling to reach their $250,000 goal, however there is no word yet on if the project will scrapped.

fuck first
damn just ask one off them rappers who look up to PE growing up to fund that shit
Why the fuck do they need a quarter of a mil to make an album? I wouldn’t give them anything either.
exactly. their albums have sounded cheap as hell since they left Defjam. 70,000 would be plenty for them.

great song of the album
As much as I love PE (especially Apocalypse 91 and earlier stuff), Chuck D really needs to drop Flava Flav and do his own thing.
Chuck’s message is still strong, but it’s hard to take them seriously after all of Flava’s reality show shit.
I donated $50 back in October. Even then I wondered why recording this LP would cost so much with home studios rampant. Some big LPs of recent years have been primarily homemade endeavors.
That said, they’re not quite the supergroup they once were where people will pick up their LPs just because a new one exists. A large chunk of that cash is probably intended for promotion that they can’t usually get through an indy. When you think of the overhead required to raise the stakes of the project being a success, I think the price is justified.
Perhaps if they broke down some of the expenses people would be willing to throw dollars at it more willingly though. Maybe I’ll put another $25 in.
More than anything, this is just sad. A group as infamous as they are, with a long history, resorting to this just to put out some music? Its a sad state of affairs for fans, for the group itself, for the industry, etc. Hmm…
Chuck shoulda stuck with Paris & Guerilla Funk. That was a nice album. Perfect combo. “Guerilla funk dot com is the website, logon get yo head right.”
that was one hot cd
Investments usually involve shares and dividends, not fucking t-shirts. They are asking for charity. I expected to read there was miniscule percentage of royalties promised, but when I read a “free” cd and another half price, I almost fell the fuck outta my chair. C’mon mane. Niggas want to invest in a CD, go to your bank.
Griff talked all that shit about Illuminati and Blood sacrifices, now PE can’t even get a record deal! That’s gonna bw his circular argument at least…always trying to keep the Black man down. How the fuck is PE broke begging for money?
They should lower it to $150K and I bet people will be interested once again and they will reach it in no time. They need to add more incentives as well cause for $250 investment just a T-Shirt, a CD, a shout-out, and an extra CD at half-price ain’t enough.
I understand that it does cost some money to have it done to the extent that they deserve it to be at but still we already know who they are. All they need is quality product (music) to disperse and we good!
