It’s been a quiet yet productive five years for Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, since his release from prison in 2011 stemming from charges related to criminal possession of a weapon. Last December, one-half of one of the greatest Hip Hop duo’s of all time revealed he would be releasing a unique memoir titled Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook, an anecdotal revision of his many days in a cell.
The basis of the book is to offer up healthy alternatives to commonplace dishes and HipHopDX is exclusively revealing that a tour — accompanied with live performances – is on the horizon.
“I am ready to get on the road to promote my new book Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook,” an excited Prodigy tells HipHopDX.
“This project is very important to me because it chronicles my experiences plus the challenges I faced while I was locked up, particularly with my health. I have sickle cell and food plays a big role in my life. I have to eat well to be well. At the same time, the book talks about other things and other people that I dealt with while I was in jail. It was fun to put together. I even recorded an audio version. People seem to dig it. I will also be performing in every market after bookstore signings, so it’s gonna be cool.”
Aside from the eight albums P-Dolo released with his longtime partner Havoc underneath the Mobb Deep umbrella, he also has seven full-length solo projects so they will be plenty of material fans can soak up during said market performances.
Prodigy, 41, co-authored the book with acclaimed journalist (and HipHopDX alum) Kathy Iandoli, who also explained how the book could increase the livelihood of those who have no association to incarceration whatsoever.
“Besides discussing several aspects of human interest within the prison system, Commissary Kitchen shows that meals—no matter how simplistic they can be—bring people together, keep people alive and healthy, and show how inmates deserve just as much access to nutrition and quality food as those of us in the outside world,” she relayed to DX.
“This book tour will bring Prodigy’s message, as those living in dorms, have family who is currently serving time, and those living on a budget can all benefit from the meals as well as the stories within this cookbook-slash-memoir.”
Pre-orders for Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook can be found at Barnes & Nobles, Target and wherever else fine books are sold.
The tour kicks off on October 1 at Barclays Center. Check out the official tour schedule via the flyer below.
