Pepsi released its list of “Five Rappers Who Stepped Outside Hip Hop” last week (October 10). The list focuses artists who have successfully crossed into other genres of music. Emcee/Producers Pharrell and will.i.am both crack Pepsi’s list.
“After linking up with Robin Thicke and friends this year,” says Pepsi, “Pharrell continues to broaden his musical artistry by composing the soundtrack to Despicable Me followed by the composing and producing the music for the 84thAcademy Awards alongside renowned film composer Hans Zimmer.”
Regarding will.i.am, Pepsi mentions the California-artist’s success in creating socially aware music in post-9/11 America, such as the multiplatinum smash as part of the Black Eyed Peas, “Where’s The Love.” The beverage company also mentions will’s Pop/R&B work with Usher on “OMG” and the House/Pop release “Big Fat Bass,” which he created with Britney Spears.
