OG Maco caught up with Complex during SXSW in Austin, Texas to talk about how his perception has changed amongst fans, moving past his hit “U Guessed It” and cultural appropriation.
Maco’s hit song “U Guessed It” helped the Atlanta-bred artist breakthrough from the underground and become more recognizable at the annual music and film festival this year. However, Maco was not impressed with a Korean pop rendition of the song, which surfaced earlier this year.
“People want to go back and run to it and say, ‘Oh, it’s the culture of Koreans to go and do this,'” Maco says. “Just because something is the culture of something, it doesn’t mean that it’s right, doesn’t mean it’s longstanding. You got cultural racism in America. That doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s just been here for forever. When you look at what they’ve been doing for years, they’ve been appropriating everything we do.”
When asked about his fans using the N-Word during his shows, Maco explained it isn’t really an issue with his crowds.
He says that he has experienced, thus far, “racially diverse and accepting crowds.” Maco used his song “Fuckemx3‘” as an example and suggested that all of his fans can say the word “fuck.”
Also, within the five-minute interview, Maco clarifies a comment he made during a Fader interview when he said “people like ‘U Guessed It’ so much because they’re idiots.”

This mf’er better now get caught eating Asian food then lol Calling out appropriation is the adult version of calling somebody a copycat, except you a grown ass dude. childish as phuck.
Isn’t he dying his hair blonde, which is a european hair color that he’s appropriating.
This is very true.
Says the guy with blonde hair… So basically we can say he is appropriating white hoes culture, right?
LOL… How can a nigga with blonde hair accuse ANY culture of appropriating ANYBODY?! Super Saiyan Goku should say why he’s copying his hair…
this guy is a moron. so pretty much hes saying only black ppl should be allowed to drink bottles and enjoy themselves by partying and turning up for a video? lmao gtfoh. thats some clown shit.
if they live that life whys that fucked up? black ppl dont got a patton on having fun in music videos and getting live.
the new ‘in’ word – ‘appropriating’. this culture shit is getting old. it’s 2015. everything is global. people from other countries/cultures can buy their shit and fund their lifestyle but they cant copy some of what you do when they are doing so because they feel your shit. it’s racism twisted. if we dont kill each other we are all going to be one one day anyway.
Its not new at all. Black people have been getting ripped off since the blues. I don’t have beef with people copying, like you said thats inevitable but how can you not understand why people get upset when you just clone there shit arbitrarily. If you aren’t a part of the culture you will have a ladder to climb. Snaking somebody’s sound has always been condemned in rap. There are no covers in this genre.
u dum sons of bitches .. did he dye his hair yes .. appropriating by dying his hair ?? no does it look good ? no.. the original people can have variations to their natural hair and be born with blonde and even reddish hair .. where did u think u got the gene which turnt recessive to fuck
Bitch u guessed it!!!!
Maco u suck. the Koreans did it better thats why u mad. Maybe make a track with real lyrics next time instead of yelling some bullshit
I want to point out that blond hair is not just a white people genetic thing. There are Africans with blond hair. So we can drop that argument.
