O.J. Simpson Granted Parole After Serving 9 Years In Prison

O.J. Simpson could be a free man as soon as October 1.

A group of four Nevada parole commissioners all voted for the former NFL star’s release after he served almost nine years in prison for charges stemming from a 2007 Las Vegas robbery. Simpson appeared remotely via video conference from the Lovelock Correctional Facility in Nevada for the hearing.

Simpson, 70, delivered an account of the case to the parole board early Thursday (July 20) and was adamant he didn’t intend to steal. He said he wished “this would have never happened,” according to ABC News.

During the robbery, Simpson and a group of men went into a hotel and casino and stole sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He claimed the memorabilia and other personal items originally belonged to him.

“The only thing I saw that was on display that wasn’t mine was some baseballs, and I made it clear to everybody those are not mine,” he said during the hearing. “All I want is my property … I wasn’t there to steal from anybody.”

Simpson’s original sentence was up to 33 years. He will have to adhere to several conditions while on parole.

The Hip Hop community came out in droves on Twitter to express their reactions to his hearing and impending release, including 9th Wonder, Questlove, Chuck D, and Top Dawg Entertainment’s Terrence “Punch” Henderson.

    3. I don’t really mind it that much, but I do feel like there is some undercover racism in the fact that a story about a black football player gets covered on a website dedicated to hip hop. I guess he did make a rap video at one point, I saw a short clip of it in the documentary about him from last year, but come on. HHDX didn’t reach like this until the past year or so, back in the day they would only cover stories that directly pertain to rappers. They’ve also noticeably stopped covering underground releases like they used to.

    5. It’s very interesting how his liable suit was for 33 mil and when they jailed him they gave him 33 years. Where in the world would you get 33 years for recovering your stolen property , only in America I guess

    6. Ze streets aint safe no mo. Oj back. He like freddy kruger always in yo nightmares comin back. Bets say this dude will flip out

    7. Trump let him out cuz he loves blacks. The civil war was won when the democrats who owned slaves in the south lost to the republicans in the north. Im begging you black humans leave your slaveowners once more and come into the warm embrace of your real Daddy. Trump. Listen Trump and Putin are bosses. Like Jay and Nas. Putin is the shit best head of state since Churchill.
