Nipsey Hussle Says Major Label’s Business Model Is “Dying”

One of Nipsey Hussle’s slogans is “Eff the middleman” and some argue that he does just that.

Sitting down recently with MTV News, the Los Angeles native said why he believes major labels’ business model is out of date.

“I feel like the major labels—I’m not gonna say all of them, but as a whole—that business model is a failing and dying business model,” Nipsey said when asked about his latest release.

When asked whether he would charge $100 for his debut album, Victory Lap (similar to what he did for his Crenshaw mixtape) Nip said he wasn’t sure but would make sure the fashion of its release will not be similar to what has already been done.

“I can’t say off top, I know I’m going to continue to pay attention to the game and I’m not going to follow what was done,” Nipsey said. “It isn’t the price of the plastic case and polyurethane disc–it’s the price of revolution! The price of rebellion against an industry that has tricked us all into making products that have no soul for fear of not being heard if we don’t.”

Nipsey Hussle recently released his Crenshaw mixtape for free download online. It was also available in physical form for an unprecedented price of $100. It was also rumored that Jay Z bought 100 copies of the tape.

    1. Why should NIpsey have to sell a $100 piece of work for only $10? He made the right call to price the mixtape at $100 because that’s what its worth.

      1. I’m legit fan as well to the point, I considered BUYING the $100 physical mixtape, but I gave it a thorough listen & its not a complete product to me. Nipsey is capable of MORE than that CRENSHAW mixtape. Its very 1 dimensional.

    2. Major labels work if you know how to sell. I don’t hear Eminem, Wayne, Ross, Drake, Jay, etc. complaining. Maybe it’s you Nipsey and the fact your music isn’t good enough for people to want to buy.

      1. hes trying to make flopping cool. if you only gonna sell 1000 copies might as well overcharge by 90% and come out on top

      2. and there music has no soul in it….thats what hes saying jay talks nothing but money kanye had some soul in it but he lost his way for that $$$ em always been a bit popy even if he doesnt no it or wants to admit it….my name is was pop rap different at the time cuz of subject matter but poppy peace

      1. games career been on the down slide any way no disrespect to game but if u really wanna be technical about it.. game has been falling off since his second album

      2. Jersus Piece,Lax, had some more than decent tracks on them

Would love to hear what you lames listen too .

P.S @ 1st anon stop posting the same comment over and over again fruity weirdo !!

    3. “It isn’t the price of the plastic case and polyurethane discit’s the price of revolution! The price of rebellion against an industry that has tricked us all into making products that have no soul for fear of not being heard if we don’t.”

i never heard Nipsey talkin like this, shit got me excited to see what he got in store

    4. I bootlegged it and the shirt from the heads up for nhright, sold em on Canal in Newyork for $20 with the shirt sold 1500 7 days outh there… im a white boy but musceled up from AUSSIE so the niggas aint fucking with me they showed love, made me 30 racks one week.. thanks homie….

    5. not only the labels are dying but the fans are dying cause the support the fans use to have for artists is dying alot of fans is fake and ego boosters and not supportive on the artist music they buy

    6. til I looked at the receipt which was of $4812, I accept …that…my sister woz actualey erning money parttime on-line.. there dads buddy started doing this for less than nine months and recently repayed the morgage on their villa and bought Mercedes-Benz S-class. check out the post right here http://smarturl.it/bhtmj6

      1. it’s called a pay-stub not a receipt

        you don’t repay a mortgage

your spam is so illiterate no one believes the benz story

        try again spambot

    7. He is right because Epic, Bad Boy Records, Def Jam, Atlantic Records are examples of dying label models. Young Money/Cash Money, Interscope, Aftermath, MMG, & RocNation are good examples of strong supportive labels.

    8. I wish people would report on this story correctly. He didn’t sell his mixtape for $100. He sold a ticket to one of his concerts, plus a signed copy of his mixtape for $100 in the beginning before the press jump on it. Now he’s just selling a sign copy of the mixtape for$100. If Jay-Z said the first 1000 copies on my new album will be personally sign by me with a personally message you like :To John Smith! Jay-Z!! etc. He could sell each one for $500 because that’s a souvenir piece. Jay-Z got 1000 hardcore fans that would buy that man.

      1. No he sole his mixtape for 100 including a ticket to a show and a signed copy. Get your facts straight unless you work for him and you know something we don’t. He said this himself.

      2. are you really trying to compare bum ass nipsey to jay-z?

if nipsey selling mixtapes for $100 jay-z should be selling for 50k a piece

    9. No he sold his mixtape for 100 and it included tickets and a sign copy. Get it right. He said it himself, unless you work for him and know something we don’t

    10. at the end of the day he did something that’s good for True artists; who are constantly put in a choke hold to create this lifeless music we all talk about, and hate.

Good way to get product into the hands of those who want and will support it, all the rest of that bullshit talk don’t matter.

      1. Tech only makes that money cause he tours 365 days a year. Mac Miller is big in social media. Not taking away what they’re doing, but most indie artists are broke and struggling. You gotta believe if Nipsey could land on a major he would instead of charging $100 for a mixtape that nobody in their right mind would pay $5 bucks for.

    11. Artists need to actually read up on this stuff rather than just blithely regurgitating myths, it’s damaging to people on the come up

Warner Bros lost $9bn in the last 10 years but have just taken a $250m lease in Manhattan…think they’re broke?

Majors arent the be-all and end-all granted, but it’s completely false to suggest A) they’re going to disappear any time soon and B) a significant number of artists are living comfortably by being DIY (almost none are).

Bear in mind major labels are MAJOR bc they operate worldwide, Nipsey’s personal experience in the US is neither here nor there

Nips, subscribe to some industry newsletters. HHDX, maybe a bit of editorial alongside this fraff might be an idea

    12. “everybody u just named has there own label so of course they wouldnt see a problem with it.”

The point was they still had to sell millions in order to get to where they’re today. Eminem’s success wasn’t a given. He could have easily faded away after that first album, but he didn’t. The artists who complain are usually the one’s who don’t have a clue what the average consumer wants to hear.
