Nicki Minaj has given her fans some insight into how she chooses which songs to feature on and admits she sometimes waits “weeks” before making a decision.

The comments were made in response to a fan on Twitter, and come shortly after the Pinkprint rapper teamed up with German pop singer Kim Petras for the single “Alone.”

“Queen, when an artist sends you a song for a collaboration, do you know right away if you’re going to do it or do you leave yourself some time to make a decision” the fan asked.

“I sleep on it,” Nicki replied. “For weeks usually. Sometimes months. Normally don’t play it after the first day. I let the universe decide. Then 1 day out of the blue I tell Juice to pull it up. That means it came back to me on its own.

She continued: “I lay a few references w/different flows, then sleep on it some more. Then… boom! I’ve made a decision. Written & recorded. Then we wait…for the barbz to give the nod of approval I guess.”

“Alone” debuted at No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated May 6, marking Nicki Minaj’s second smash collab of the year after doing major numbers with her Ice Spice joint, “Princess Diana.”

The new Ice Spice has been downloaded 77,000 times since its April 14 debut – which is the best sales week for any rap track since Nicki dropped off “Super Freaky Girl” last year. The single also allowed Ice Spice to nab her first No. 1 Hot Rap Song after appearing on the charts four previous times.

In addition, “Princess Diana” has the eighth spot in chart history featuring at least two solo women, which dates back to 1989 (including rappers and singers).

In an interview with JT for i-D last year, Nicki Minaj said she’s yearning to hear women rap again, and said working with female MC’s is what inspired her to drop the Super Freaky Girl (Queen Mix), which featured JT and Nicki alongside the unsigned rappers Katie Got Bandz, Maliibu Miitch, BIA and Akbar V.

“I wanna hear girls rap again. Like, just rap. When I did my BET Cypher years ago, I purposely didn’t wear revealing clothes,” Nicki said. “I wore a sweatsuit. So even though we were being super freaky girls on the song, and we all had fun, y’all really spit.”

As far as her own music is concerned, Nicki Minaj dropped off her new song “Red Ruby Da Sleeze,” in March and confirmed in a recent interview the track would not serve as the lead single off her forthcoming follow-up to her 2018 album Queen.

“‘Red Ruby [Da Sleeze],’ I dropped it as a itty-bitty just something,” she said while premiering the song on the Stationhead app. “’Cause I know it’s gon’ go off on tour, it’s gon’ go off on y’all. It’s just rapping. But the album, obviously, I have to drop my official single for the album. ‘Red Ruby’ is not the official single for the album.”
