Fresh off his new mixtape, Nick Cannon reveals to The Breakfast Club he contributed a bar to Kanye West’s featured verse on Rhymefest’s “Brand New” off his 2006 album Blue Collar.
The project hit #10 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart and was critically acclaimed, even garnering a 4 out 5 stars on HipHopDX.
“I ain’t never wrote no smashes, but I’ve been in the Kanye camps early on,” Nick says. “I was there doing ‘Gold Digger.’ I wrote the bar for Kanye, ‘We don’t need to stunt/I make black history every day, I don’t need a month.’ That was me. Kanye’s bar. Stuff like that. That’s why I love Kanye and his movement because he knows how to make great music, great songs. That ego doesn’t get into the art form. He’s like, ‘If somebody say something dope, let’s get to it.’ Being a part of that process, I’ve learned so much from him in making songs because anybody can get in front of a mic and spit bars, but to create a song, that’s a true talent.”
It’s not unusual for ‘Ye to allow for those around him to be part of the process of creating his musical projects. He’s known for having a long list of writing and sometimes producer credits to those who’ve helped contribute. His 2014 record “All Day” had 31 named contributors including Paul McCartney and Mario Winans (Yes, “I Don’t Wanna Know,” Bad Boy, Mario).
Upon Cannon releasing The Gospel of Ike Turn Up; My Side of the Story, a 17-track project featuring Jeremih, Quavo and K. Michelle, he also revealed in the interview that he has a little one on the way with Brittany Bell. This will be his third child, including twins with divorced wife Mariah Carey.
Congratulations, Nick and Brittany!

How these idiots try to sugarcoat the fact that Kanye is wack. Oh his ego gets not in the way when we write his lyrics. Of course not, he uses talented people to do his work and then people get him the credit for it. Writting lyrics isnt that hard, sitting on your ass and wait till the job is done and then putting the song together is the real craft. BULLSHIT!!!
And giving someone 1 Line isnt Ghostwritting
hhdx already deleting comments again
but they don’t delete the racist, homophobic, sexist ones.
Nick Canon is a pathetic Uncle Tom joke.
Soooo you do know Uncle Tom was the hero….right? GTFOH
Nick Cannon has no purpose in Hip Hop!
I like Nick Cannon, but I think he should stop trying to cater to the black demographic because it’s obvious they don’t appreciate his work. So at this point why even try to get credibility from a group that will never accept you? He’s talented, works hard, is a great host, etc.
Kanye isn’t really known for his lyrical prowess. He has some solid songs lyrically but it’s been long known that he has writers that he collabs with. His production has been his gift. Makes fantastic beats, and the way they flow when he puts an album together is beautiful. Def not top 5 lyrically, but easily top 5 in terms of catalogue of music. Each album is mainly fire, and most have very different sounds and feels. Dude is a legend whether you like him or not.
Dude is a performer/Enteratiner . He used to be a good producer but gets help doing beats too from at least 5 Producers each Production. Thats not great. He is just like all the other pop Artist, a puppet for the real Artists behind him. He is overrated and an attention wh*re.
The music he releases is mainly fantastic. Considering his track record going back to “this can’t be life” and a large portion of the Blueprint album, it would be foolish to say that everyone else does the work and he takes the credit. It’s more likely he does the majority, and works with other producers to make it better. Since when did collaborating become bad? If you think all of the big name producers make their beats on their own and have no input from others than you are mistaken. When you list the other producers or writers, you aren’t being fake or stealing anything. And when you list someone else first on a particular track, you acknowledge that’s their beat, and everyone else helped. He’s been around for 16 years behind the scenes and at the forefront, and he’s been evolving the entire time. You may not like him, he says a lot of stupid stuff no doubt, but what he puts out overall has been amazing.
