One of the original songwriters/production team of “You’re All That I Need To Get By” has died. Nick Ashford of the husband-and-wife team Ashord & Simpson died yesterday (August 22) in New York City. Within the Hip Hop community, Ashford & Simpson’s 1968 hit by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell was adapted by Method Man and Mary J Blige for 1994’s “I’ll Be There For You.”
From Ashford & Simpson’s own catalog, spanning several decades, Hip Hop sampled works in the form of MC Lyte‘s 1988 hit “Lyte As A Rock” and Zhané’s “Request Line.”
Ashford died from complications of throat cancer. He was 69 years old.
RIP Great music they made. Legend.
i didn’t even know who this guy was, but he apparently had a big impact on music.
May He Rest In Peace
dude. Ashford & Simpson wrote sooooo many hits back in the day. For people like Diana Ross.
Just getting some memories back recalling, “Solid as a Rock”
the whole earth must remember this, not letting on my age but must have been a wee tincy wincy
Damn, we lost another GREAT legend…R.I.P.
Thanks for heads up. For crate diggers like myself, this is a real loss. RIP.
