Netflix Axes Marvel’s “Luke Cage”

Marvel’s Harlem Hip Hop superhero Luke Cage won’t be cleaning up the streets for a third season.

Netflix decided to cancel the much buzzed about series as their fall rollout marches full steam ahead.

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” Netflix told TheWrap in a statement.

According to their insider info, the decision to cancel the show involved creative differences and failing to reach terms on a deal going forward.

Created by tenured Hip Hop journalist and Biggie biopic Notorious writer Cheo Hodari Coker, the series embraced a heavy Hip Hop element; with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge serving as the show’s composers and having rappers ranging in generation from Rakim to Jidenna guest starring. The season episodes were even exclusively named after Gang Starr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth songs.

Another Marvel series, the largely panned Iron Fist, also won’t be returning past the second season.

    1. One of my favorite shows, both season have been amazing. Marvel should step in give it a run for a movie. Surprised to see it get canceled it is easily one of the most popular shows on netflix. Pretty sure they will end up working it out.

      1. Hoping the same, maybe Hulu, showtime, I don’t see it getting picked up by a cable network, but then again you never know. If I was TNT, Fox, ABC, CBS I would take a run at, Do one season just to see, the Reward would def out weigh the risk

      1. I agree but this wasn’t one of them, It doesn’t follow the the typical super hero story, shit is hood lol. The show had a very heavy Hip hop, R&B and soul influence. I thought it was the best show on Netflix, and it was extremely popular. That’s two of my favorite shows on Netflix to get canned, The Get Up was really good also. Damn black shows don’t last long on netflix HMMM

        1. Lol. I hear you. I think the second season of the Get Up was rushed, and the added element of animation within most of the seasons episodes was an obvious shortcut to save time and money. That’s where they lost me personally. Imo, it would’ve served well with just the one season, and then transition to the next hip hop era on the second with an entirely new cast, plot, but cleverly blending facts with fiction like they did initially.

    2. Maybe 5 good episodes, this was trash. Just because it had a black hero doesn’t mean it was good. Iron fist, super trash.

    3. loved this show it was waaaaaaaaaaayyy better than iron fist and jessica jones and you know it!!!!!!!!!!!! #zapsign

    4. My assumption (and we all know the flaws of assuming…bear with me) is that it has something to do with Marvel getting ready to stream their own IP’s. Why have a third party do it when one can do it themselves and reap the entire benefits. Great series. Sad it has come to an end…

    5. Gave this show a chance, but just couldn’t get into it. Personally don’t mind that it got axed. Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’ was one hell of a show that they axed… That one I still miss a lot. 3rd season took a very deep dive towards the end, writers probably got the word of ending the series pretty late. That show deserved at least one more season.

    6. Hopefully this means they are getting ready to do Heroes For Hire the show. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing! I just hope they keep all the hip hop music, that’s what made this show the best

    7. What happen? Season One was the Joint! See how black folks can’t slow down for a sec. lol Though I heard season 2 was mixed. But Daredevil season 2 was so so.
