A Black Lives Matter rally in Dallas, Texas turned deadly on Thursday night when at least one sniper opened fire on police officers, according to a statement from Police Chief David Brown. The bullets were said to have been coming from above the rally, just before 9:00 p.m.
Five officers were killed and seven others were wounded, reports the New York Times.
Two civilians were injured, including a woman at the rally named Shetamia Taylor who was hit in the leg and treated.
Police were still looking to confirm the number, identity and motive of the suspects hours after the shooting.
Overnight they were negotiating with a suspect cornered in a parking garage in downtown Dallas who continued to make threats and claimed there were bombs planted around the city. Initial reports said that the suspect killed himself to end the standoff, but in a Friday morning news conference, Chief Brown clarified that he was killed by an explosive device delivered by a police robot. “He said he was upset about the recent police shootings,” Chief Brown said. “The suspect said he was upset at white people. The suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers.”
Several media outlets identified the slain suspect as Micah X. Johnson, a 25-year-old man from Texas.
An extensive sweep of the downtown area by police has discovered no additional explosives.
Brown said in an earlier press conference that the investigation was ongoing. “We still don’t have a complete comfort level that we have all the suspects, so we will continue a very, very rigorous investigation and search of downtown … until we are satisfied that all suspects have been captured,” he said.
The law enforcement agency released an image of a person of interest earlier, who turned himself in. He was reportedly released from custody several hours later.
Another person was reportedly in custody after a shootout with SWAT officers. DallasPD Twitter updates said police found a suspicious package near the second suspect’s location that the Dallas bomb squad was securing. Chief Brown said a woman had been detained near the garage.
Police also stopped a Mercedes on the highway that an officer had seen speed off after a person with camouflage bags got in. The two men were reportedly released after being questioned by police. WFAA News reported that the driver said he was picking his brother up at the bus station downtown and that the bags were his luggage. In a news conference that happened around the same time, Chief Brown said the two were in custody.
The scenes coming out of the city on social media show the chaos on the streets.
Protesters had been peacefully marching through the downtown streets to rally against the killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling.
Castile was killed by an officer during a traffic stop in Minnesota on July 6 and a live video of his last moments was posted on Facebook by his girlfriend and circulated widely on social media. His death came one day after Sterling was shot and killed by police in Louisiana, an incident that was also caught on video and went viral.
Their deaths have reignited the ongoing debate around police brutality and racism in America, with many members of the Hip Hop community weighing in.

At least five black victims had reportedly tried to grab the officer’s gun, or had been beating the cop with his own equipment. Some were shot from an accidental discharge triggered by their own assault on the officer. And two individuals included in the Post’s “unarmed black victims” category were struck by stray bullets aimed at someone else in justified cop shootings. If the victims were not the intended targets, then racism could have played no role in their deaths.
In one of those unintended cases, an undercover cop from the New York Police Department was conducting a gun sting in Mount Vernon, just north of New York City. One of the gun traffickers jumped into the cop’s car, stuck a pistol to his head, grabbed $2,400 and fled. The officer gave chase and opened fire after the thief again pointed his gun at him. Two of the officer’s bullets accidentally hit a 61-year-old bystander, killing him. That older man happened to be black, but his race had nothing to do with his tragic death. In the other collateral damage case, Virginia Beach, Virginia, officers approached a car parked at a convenience store that had a homicide suspect in the passenger seat. The suspect opened fire, sending a bullet through an officer’s shirt. The cops returned fire, killing their assailant as well as a woman in the driver’s seat. That woman entered the Post’s database without qualification as an “unarmed black victim” of police fire. We also should examine a number of other instances, including unarmed black men in San Diego, CA and Prince George’s County, MD attempting to reach for a gun in a police officer’s holster. In the San Diego case, the unarmed black man actually “jumped the officer” and assaulted him, and the cop shot the man since he was “fearing for his life.” Please also note that there was an instance in 2015 where “three officers were killed with their own guns, which the suspects had wrestled from them.”

I can tell you facts. In 2010 I was 18 and 4 months I lived in NY, because of exchange program between Russian and U.S. Students. It was a hard year, we were paid 5-7 $ an hour. Me and my brother lived between Coney Island and Sea gate, where 85% are blacks. On the first day when we walked to buy pizza on the 24th street 4 black guys came to us and told we have to give them 100$ each. We told that we are poor Russian students who came with 500$ and a dream to see US. We spoke after we offered them pizza, the next day they offered us pizza with them, during the month we knew half of the hood, played basketball, smoked blunts and were absolutely OK. So white Hateful RUSSIANS became friends with blacks, so why are citizens of one country couldn’t be friendly??? Racism is so fucked up
