Mos Def has always been known to speak up.
Last week, he was arrested by NYPD for doing just that. His arrest came due to
a one song concert he threw in front of Radio City Music Hall, during MTV’s VMA’s.
According to several reports, Mos rolled up
and performed Katrina Clap in front of the hundreds of fans outside of
Radio City Music Hall.
Police acted quickly in attempts to shut the show down because they felt the
crowd’s safety could have been at risk.
His publicist Carleen
Donovan opened up about the arrest this weekend.
“Mos Def did not set out to get arrested or break
laws,” she told TheShowbuzz. “His only intention was to
remind people that after one year the people hardest hit by Katrina still need
the support of all Americans. Mos Def chose to use his voice to speak for those
who are losing their own during this critical period of reconstruction.”
The publicist goes on to say the arrest was unfair and that Mos will fight the summons he was
given.
“[He] was in the middle of performing and as soon as he was made aware
of the police’s presence, he shut everything down. His staff and team were
willing to comply as well but the police overreacted. Mos Def was not charged
but given a summons for operating a sound-reproduction device without a permit,
which he is going to contest,” she also said via statement.
