Earlier this week, RZA and producer Cilvaringz revealed the news that Wu-Tang Clan’s upcoming single copy album The Wu – Once Upon A Time In Shaolin may only be released commercially after 88 years.
During a recent phone interview with XXL, Method Man opened up about his take on the proposition.
“What do you mean 88 years?” Method Man said, appearing to be unaware of the recent reveal.
After a brief explanation, Method Man had some choice words to say regarding the project.
“Fuck that album,” Method Man says. “I’m tired of this shit and I know everybody else is tired of it, too. Fuck that album, if that’s what they are doing. I haven’t heard anything like that, but if they’re doing crap like that, fuck that album. Straight up. I’m just keeping it 100. When music can’t be music and y’all turning it into something else, fuck that. Give it to the people, if they want to hear the shit, let them have it. Give it away free. I don’t give a fuck; that ain’t making nobody rich or poor. Give the fucking music out. Stop playing with the public, man.”
Despite his apparent distaste for the project, Method Man later revealed that he was a fan of the concept at first.
“I dug the whole idea in the beginning. I’m like, ‘Wow, this has never been done before,’” he said. “I was cool with shit. But now, this is ridiculous. 88 years? Really? If that shit is true, that shit is stupid. You have to wait 88 years to hear some shit? By that time, it’s going to be fuckin’ played out. If it ain’t already played out. I hope that’s a rumor. Whoever said that, that shit is fuckin’ stupid.”
Later on in the conversation, Method Man disclosed that he’s working on some solo music and that fans can expect new material from him sometime soon.
“I got some shit in the works,” Method Man revealed. “Methlab is coming. [I’m working with] a bunch of Staten Island artists because I’m trying to get my people recognized. Wu-Tang ain’t the only thing that can come out of Staten Island. There’s a lot of talent in Staten Island. It’s the Persona Non Grata that holds brothers back. It’s always the Persona Non Grata.”
Method Man’s upcoming film The Cobbler is due out March 13.

Method Man is the man for saying this. Hopefully it has some effect and they won’t actually ban the public from hearing this album.
RZA is the fucking Kanye West of the Wu-Tang
The rest of the Wu can’t even listen to their own album LOL
Method Man thank you for this. It needed to be said.
Coming from someone who’s too lazy to finish up his own album.
nigga ain’t too lazy. he stay on tour. and he’s trying to get movie dough. new music don’t pay the bills these days
want him to finish his album, if you ain’t paying for it, keep your mouth shut, just saying.
method man keeping it real.
i’ve supported rza through the ups and downs but he’s a dickhead for the way he’s been handling this project. he linked up with loser affiliate never was never was gonna be cilvarings after the project was already done and now he’s carrying the headlines as if he’s the avant-garde brain child of this pitiful promotional stunt. cilvarings has never been attached to a successful project in any capacity, and has been affiliated with wu for over 15 years to NO RESULTS. this pathetic roll out should’ve been expected with this idiot running the show.
delusional is the word that jumps into my head with all this news. they keep passing it off as art but i think their primary objective is getting PAID. it’s not for the fans, it’s not for the arts, it’s for their pockets. SHAMEFUL.
rza linked up with the biggest loser affiliate in the clan and pulled a bonehead move that pissed fans off worse than the recent mediocre projects he spearheaded. he’ll have a tough time living this down moving forward, and i don’t blame any clan member not wanting anything to do with rza after he revealed himself this way to public.

Method’s credibility just went up in my book. It’s sad, because Meth was one of the dudes staying loyal with RZA. Need that Meth Lab, tho.
here’s a bit more clarification. it only said he couldn’t release the album commercially for 88 years. He could leak it out for free or he could take the album on tour. He could even therotically sell the one copy to someone else. he just can’t reproduce it and sell the music.
I will do as I wish
I gotta say, after listening to ‘A Better Tomorrow’ Method Man was the ONLY stand-out on that entire thing, and I have a new/re-found love for the guy. He had the best rhymes, best style and the most energy. Everybody else sounded tired as fuck… even Ghost, whom I’ve always thought was the one that never got tired, was sounding bad. Same with that 36 Seasons album, he sounded lazy as fuck.
Props to Meth for speaking truth.
Trying to understand the 88yrs, I’m wondering if this has to do with how its currently being sold as Art Work. A lot of times artists whose name has a lot of value will sell a piece with a contract that says the work being purchased can’t be resold until x amount of years have passed.
real niggas wait 88 years
