Lyor Cohen, Dante Ross Broke Up Leaders Of The New School, Dinco D Says

In an interview with The Real Hip-Hop, former Leaders Of The New School rapper Dinco D spoke on internal conflict within the group, but mentioned that outside instigation was what ultimately lead to its split.

“Everybody had their part to do with it, man,” Dinco D says. “The main part was the outside part. It was Dante Ross. Dante Ross was a part of the split-up, Lyor Cohen, and our management. There was a chance for Busta to stand his ground and tie it together where he could still do his solo thing and we could still make Leaders albums. Outside forces really worked on the split-up. He took it — ain’t nothing wrong with that. That just led to a wider crack opening the crack up for other things.”

Cohen has been accused a creating friction by others. In June, Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Dame Dash said Cohen caused the beef responsible for breaking up The Roc, calling him a “culture vulture.” Dinco agreed, saying Cohen was “a part in breaking up a lot of groups.”

“You gotta understand Dante Ross and Lyor Cohen are outside dudes and they’re controlling stuff,” Dinco said. “They don’t really care about groups and the essence of it as long as they got a hand in it and they’re controlling something…They take the key element out, or what’s hot right now and get rich off of it.”

Leaders Of The New School appeared on A Tribe Called Quest’s acclaimed “Scenario” single.

Dinco also said that he and Busta Rhymes have discussed a possible Leaders Of The New School reunion.

“We talk about it,” Dinco D says. “I talk to Busta here and there. It’s going to have to be up to him to step outside of his box and what he’s doing and make time for it. He talks about it, we’ve talked about it, so we’ll see, man.”

    1. its oooover bruh… give it up man thats old and this coming from someone who grew up on LONS. everyman gotta stand on his own

      1. Dinco D from 1989 to 2015 that has not happened that train aint coming this way again, time for you to move on and forget about Busta like he forgot about LONS! I DITTO ABOVE Comment

    2. Sorry Dinco D but truth is no one cared about Dinco D. LONS was all about Busta and you and Brown got jealous and couldn’t handle it. I agree about Lyor but Dante is from outside the culture? Dante Ross is one of the sickest producer (Stimulated Dummies) for 3 decades and he is the reason why we have: Del The Funky Homosapien, 3rd Bass, MF DOOM, Brand Nubian, Pete Rock… Busta Rhymes Feat. the other 2 guys.

    3. Dante Ross lived and breathed this hip-hop shit. He still does if you ever get a chance to hear him speak…He doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his moves behind the scenes.

    4. I’ve had a one on one convo with Dante Ross via facebook. He’s definitely a 2014 slavemaster after his insensitive tone with me

    5. In a phone interview I did with Dante Ross years ago, he said they pretty much weren’t a group anymore when they were asked to be signed, partially due to the internal B.S. they were going through. First album was a miracle in being pieced together, that’s why there’s essentially a solo track or two on it. The success of the first album was a surprise to everyone in the group, so by the time they were doing the second album, it was going to be over again. If Dinco D wants to blame everyone for splitting them up, it was more or less “outsiders” telling them “you have no chemistry anymore as friends.” If anything, LONS needed to hear it or end up being another early 90’s casualty, but they did anyway. Busta got hints and even when people were asking him for cameos, he was still hesitant until he embraced an “all or nothing” attitude, and that’s how he elevated to the next level.

As for me, I always liked Dinco D and had hoped he would’ve branched out but he seemed to be too happy in his own world and didn’t break out. At least Charlie Brown did for a short time.

    6. Of all the talents Dante has the only one that work’s for him is his ‘gift of gab’. He’s a jack of all trades waiting to be exposed. He’s never produced a song on his own. He’ll hire out and then just take the credit & f*ck over his people. As a A&R he did a good job for working for another man’s co. and spending another man’s $. On his own dime he hasn’t accomplished shit. Besides being a master of talking it. Mr. A&R, Super Producer, Dj, Punk Rocker, Skateboarder, Street Wear aficionado & what ever else may be ‘cool’ next month he’s done. What ever happened with Action and every other artist he’s has tried to manage. Now that’s a good ? to ask him.
