Lupe Fiasco Says “Food & Liquor II” Will Lose For Best Rap Album At The Grammy Awards

Lupe Fiasco has been nominated for the Grammy Awards’ Best Rap Album category for every one of his releases since his debut, 2007’s Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor. Even though he has one trophy for his collaboration with Jill Scott, “Daydreamin’,” Lu is yet to take home the Grammophone for one of his LPs.

This year, the Chicago, Illinois rapper is once again honored in the Best Rap Album category for Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, where he’s up against Nas’ Life is Good, 2 Chainz’s Based on a T.R.U. Story, Drake’s Take Care, Rick Ross’ God Forgives, I Don’t and The Roots’ undun. During an interview with Jenny Boom Boom, the Atlantic Records signee said that he doesn’t think he has a shot at winning at this Sunday’s ceremony and that top honors will go to Esco.

“Every album since Food & Liquor, my first official release, has been nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammys,” he said, denying that he will win. “No. Clearly I won’t. Nas, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz and The Roots. Ah yeah, it is Drake? Forgot about it.

“I think they’ll give it to Nas,” he continued. “I think they’ll give it to Nas, to be honest.”

Lupe most recently announced that the second installment to Food & Liquor II was canceled. This past Thursday, he performed at the “Play It Forward: A Celebration of Music’s Evolution and Influencers” event at the Grammy Foundation’s 15th Annual Preservation Project.

    1. “I think they’ll give it to Nas,” he continued. “I think they’ll give it to Nas, to be honest.”

And honestly, Nas deserves it. Lupe’s album was alright, just very disjointed. The Root’s undun was fantastic, but far too conceptual for a Grammy. The other choice would be GKMC, but since that isn’t up for nomination then the only thing that makes sense is Life is Good.

      1. And Rick Ross, 2Chainz, and Drake do not even deserve a nomination. There are at least a dozen more solid 2012 releases.

    2. Undun and Life Is Good are the only two deserving of an award. Food & Liquor II is almost up there. The rest of those albums are a joke.

    3. These albums so SOFT!!! The grammy’s so SOFT!!! My album should of been nominated cause im a BAWSEEEEEE!!!

      1. Wow Ross, were you in a coma or something for the past two months? Did that crash give you amnesia? Ur album IS nominated, duke. You ain’t gonna win though.

    4. Damn good kid maad city didnt even make the shortlist thats fucked its gotta be the album of the year. Nas gotta win then if 2 chainz or officer ricky take it im gon smoke my neighbours fuckin cat

    5. I hope he’s not trying to say he’s going to not win this year because his albums in previous years didn’t win. The only Lupe album that deserved a grammy was his debut Food and Liquor album, since it was leagues better than that Ludacris album Release Therapy.

But Lupe isn’t winning this year because his album not only didn’t sell the best out of all in the category, but also because Undun and Life is Good are much better.

      1. I agree completely.

I think Lupe’s biggest weakness is his inability to be humble. He thinks he is the best lyricist and realest rapper in years because critics were on his dick a few years back, and now his shit just comes off really pretentious, like he thinks he’s smarter than his listeners.

Nas on the other hand made a very REAL and very HUMBLE album reflecting on his life and its struggles. The Roots on the other hand made a very ambitious concept album that really turned out to be something special.

      2. so rappers, musicians, professional athletes, any type of professional for that matter should not think they are the best at what they do? u must consider yourself a horrible toilet bowl scrubber then huh? I fucking can’t stand 2Chainz god awful retarded music but i guarantee you he believes he is great at what he does and thats why he is where he’s at right now for believing in himself. people are so picky, stupid, and bitch made these days.

    6. if 2 chainz or drake win, imma hurt somebody. rick ross is okay, but cant hold a candle to the roots, nas or lupe. lupe gets a few extra points being so humble about it.. but unfortunately for him he’s probably right.

    7. At least you know and your whining aint making anyone reconsider… ditch rapping and carry the activist mantle… u seem to got headlines for that more than ur music nowadays… lookin like a confused rastafarian wannabe

    8. Life Is Good Kid

But no Kendrick Lamar I see, so I say Nas should win this
Otherwise it would be a toe to toe battle between Nas & Lamar
      Just my opinion

But during the “ice-age of Hip Hop” it wouldn’t be weird to see some corny dude win a award

      1. To be eligible for this years Grammy’s you have to have an album released between October, 2011 – September, 2012. Since good kid m.A.A.d city was released October 2012 it isn’t eligible this year.

    9. he’s right. life is good, take care or undun will win. i’d like life is good to win, i wouldn’t be mad at take care. i haven’t heard undun but it probably deserves it as well

      1. Really, cuz last I checked none of Nas’ albums have ever won a grammy. That’s 20 years in the game. His albums are always nominated, but he never won. So no, Nas is not a lock to win it.

      2. if he does, he’ll win for illmatic and his career. he’ll win cause he deserves it, not necessarily for life is good, although it deserves to win.

    10. It’s actually astonishing how consistently the Grammies get it dead wrong. 2 Chainz and God Forgives, I dont?!?! That wasnt even a good Rozay album. If i remember correctly, Teflon Don, which was WAYYY FUCKING BETTER, wasnt even nominated. Also, wasn’t GKMC the unanimous Rap album of the year.. mainstream and critical? Im just confused.

Of these picks, Undun SHOULD DEFINITELY win, Take Care should be the backup, and Life Is Good will win. SMH

      1. GKMC came after the Grammy cutoff date. Same reason why Drake’s album is on here and Ye had two last year.

      1. So he’s whining by being real and admitting that Life Is Good is a better album than his? that makes sense. you’re a hating bitch. pussy down.

    11. I like Lupe, the album was dope but your probably right, Nas’ was legendary. The Roots’ Undun was pretty great also. 2 Chains nominated hahaha what a joke.

    12. i was scared for nas, now that gkmc isnt nominated, it’s a sure win now!

;D he would have won between the two ANYWAY!!!

    13. Lol at people thinking Take Care won’t win. The album sucks dick, but luckily for Drake, all the critics suck his gay dick repeatedly.

    14. lupe say that cause is not about talent or content its about popularity learn the politics before you hate on lupe..

      1. co-sign. a while back even CNN had him in a big ass feature on their homepage saying he was hip hop’s finest MC. Nas is a legend and he definitely deserves the recognition from the most famous music awards show in the world

    15. As long as 2 Chains doesn’t win it. I’m cool with Nas or Drake winning it also. But then again, the grammy’s shouldn’t even have a hiphop category, I’m not sure how it is every year but last year they didn’t really any of the hiphop categories, I remember Jay and Ye winning one on that was televised but then I remembered having to look up Kanye winning most of the hiphop awards on the internet because they didn’t show them.

    16. yep, lupe’s right. his old ass isn’t going to win it. but he’s wrong for saying old ass nas is going to win. matter of fact, none of the old ass niggas in that category are grabbing that trophy. it will go to the youngest and best in the category. drizzy! mark my words.

    17. Rakim
      Ice Cube
      KRS-One
      Kool G Rap
      Busta Rhymes
      Trick Daddy
      Plies

    18. Its betwen Drake, Nas and The Roots. Undun was amazing and critically acclaimed, Nas is overdue a grammy like when Scorsese got it for the Departed and Drake because hes popular.

    19. Fuck a grammy “stick the bell part up yo ass call yo mami” dont mean you music is good Minilli vanilli won one for lip synching those horrible songs anyhow….if you a rebel dont really matter anyhow
