Lupe Fiasco Responds To Number One Debut

As previously reported, Lupe Fiasco began the week atop the sales charts after selling 204,000 copies of his third album, Lasers. According to Lupe, his doctor has him on vocal rest, so in lieu of an interview, he took to Twitter and responded to the news with a rhyme composed as a series of tweets, writing the following:

“Love got me thru it / Best fans ever made the whole world care / Had 51st & 6th looking like Tahrir Square / Took Gaza Strip’s politics / And put them number one and shit / Took the myth that conscious don’t equal commercial / And mothafuckin’ pummeled it / Apologize for dumbing it / But look what has become of it / All Black Everything / Some old white southern woman humming it…”

The Chicago emcee addressed his previous statements about the emotional toll creating the album caused, referring to what seemed to be a thinly veiled reference to suicide on “Beautiful Lasers” by saying, “From the backseats of phantoms I thought of leaving thru suicide doors.”

There were also mentions of the Fiasco Friday protest, a short-lived feud with RapRadar.com and admission that Lupe modified the stance he took on “Dumb It Down” in hopes of repairing his strained relationship with Atlantic records. All told, the bars amounted to a total of nine Twitter messages, including condolences for Nate Dogg and those affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

and there it will remain, for atleast another week, right at number 1, hahaha yeah nigguh, stay strong Japan, Nate Dogg REST IN PEACE!!!about 19 hours ago

      1. Lasers is not a bad album as some people are making it out to be. Lupe’s lyrics and message are still at a top level. Beamin, All Black, Shining Down, Words I never said and show goes on are all elite tracks laced with lyrical genius by Lupe. The expectation level is super high and there is no doubt that there are some garbage tracks on the album but Lupe’s brilliance out weighs the garbage even on the poor tracks.

    1. He truly deserves it 8) but his next album better not be a bunch of bullshit like some of the tracks on Lasers or he might lose some fans

      1. Well it goes both ways. He’s making money and got Atlantic off his back. Wouldn’t you be happy too? Sure, it wasn’t the album he wanted it to be, but he’s gotten his message out to more people, no matter how much you nerds cry about it on blogs.

It’s a compromise. One he didn’t want to make, but was a necessary evil. He’s apologizing for dumbing it down a little but hey, at least more people know what he’s talking about now.

You nerds are the hypocrites. He gets a little hype and you turn your back on him for “selling out”? He’s in a business, he sold out as soon as he got signed. Shut the fuck up.

      2. I’ve never been a Lupe fan. He’s a fucking cornball who first came out as a gangster rapper until he realized he wasn’t making money like that

        Lupe doesn’t like you, nigga

      3. Says the Joe Budden fan? Joe ain’t hot anymore, and he never really was. Love or hate Lasers, Lupe always spits real.
Besides, when you’re as smart and successful as Lupe maybe you can talk. In the meantime, keep riding Budden’s dick and stay poor.

    2. He also didnt do well because the album is more commercial. He did well because he has cult fans who were waiting for lasers and would have bought it regardless.

      1. Commerical?? Are you even listening to the lyrics or just the beat…. Dumbass

Lupe is too smart for most you fucking idiots

      2. anonymous, you’re obviously too fucking retarded to comprehend a basic english sentence. Jayron posted that Lupe did well because of his core fan base, and not because the album is more commercial. You can NOT argue that Lasers is less or equally commercial to food and liquor or the cool. End of story.

    3. I wish I had a red button that would destroy all of these emo crybaby rappers in the industry these days. I dont think theres one rapper in the mainstream thats dropped an album and just left it at “this is my album, take it or leave it” in the last 5 yrs.

      1. Nas is the exception to the complaining rappers of today. You got Souljah Boy, Bow Wow, Lupe, 50 Cent, and Drake all releasing albums then coming back after the albums released like “oh, I rushed that album…its not what I really wanted to do” or “the label made me do it” or “the producers fucked up my last album” or some other retarded excuse. And Nas is definitely one of the few that puts material out and never apologizes for it…I dont think I remember him even saying shit about the horrendous nastradamus album.

      2. He did say ” they buggin say Nastradamus
Just wasn’t one of my hardest, sold over a mil regardless”

only comment he made tat I remember

      3. Yo whoever said Nas is the Greatest rapper I totally agree with that! I’m hoping they finally release that Lost Tapes 2!

Nowadays there’s so much at stake and them labels are just more controlling than ever. I mean I wouldn’t be surprised because it’s their money and they are trying to avoid risk. Artistic integrity is almost out the window unless you are the exception like Jay or Em or Kanye, then you can sort of do what you want But it guess it’s all politics! lol

      1. Fuck all yall anonymous muthafucks who be hating on Jews, yall just jealous trailer trash rednecks….LOL u will NEVER possess the fame and fortune that Jews have attained. Yall are worthless and are only good for being on welfare…disgusting pigs

      2. F all u antisemitic redneck bastards, yall are jealous and will NEVER attain the fame and fortune which the Jewish people possess. Kill yourselves

      1. its called a compromise. either you bitch about him not putting out an album (which was beyond his control btw) or he put out one that will hopefully please his fans AND his label. music is a business. especially when a label has to decide whether to invest in your craft or not, better recognize that man.

    4. BTW HHDX, I not liking the font for these comments. Either they need to be bigger or a different font of the same size. That weird “a” make me look at words a little funny.

    5. he was cryin now hes jumpin up n down he better thank atlantic records for pickin them copies up

with all the bs pushin the album back do yall think they was gonna let this album flop yeaah right

    6. The thing is the album is WEAK. We all can understand “dumbing down” to get more exposure, but even Jay-Z gives the hardcore fans a bone (D.O.A) in between his pop songs (Run This Town etc). Lupe gave us an album full of radio single, minus All Black, and honestly even that wasn’t that great.

    7. the way i look at it is, i mean LASERs sucked and all these fake fans are coming now but his next album when he’s hopefully not influenced by some dumb fucking record label and when he makes good music again then he’ll actually be known for it? idk that’s what i hope will happen.
