Lil Nas X has been a heavy topic of conversation since the “Old Town Road” controversy exploded last month. And like countless others, Ebro Darden had his opinion on Dave East’s recent commentary on the matter.
On Thursday (April 18), the Harlem-bred rapper blasted the song and consequently, got dragged on Twitter.
“This fuckin’ ‘Old Town Road’ shit is fuckin’ wack,” East said. “I don’t know what the fuck is going on with Hip Hop; with rap [and] I ain’t no hater, but that shit is wack. With a cape on it! And super wack!”
Ebro replied, “Dave East is supposed to dislike ‘Old Town Road’ …. because HipHop needs him to!!!”
Evidently, Lupe Fiasco wasn’t impressed with the radio host’s sentiments – despite the fact Ebro’s job essentially revolves around his thoughts on Hip Hop culture.
“Stop speaking for hip hop as a whole,” the “Kick, Push” mastermind commented.
“Old Town Road — described as country trap music — started making headlines in March when the Hip Hop/country hybrid went viral. It made Billboard’s cross-genre Hot 100 chart, the Hot Country Songs chart and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart simultaneously.
But shortly after its debut, the song was removed from Billboard’s country chart.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Billboard stated, “Upon further review, it was determined that ‘Old Town Road’ by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard‘s country charts. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition.
“While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”

Calling Old Town Road Country/Trap is hella racist lol. So let me get this straight: a country song performed by a black guy is ”trap”? Do people even know what trap music is? How in the fuck does the song incorporate anything any trap song ever has lmao. Oh yeah, dude is black thats why.
And the irony is that a lot of the “country” songs I hear from white country singers sound like trap songs. But the bigger issue is that Hiphop has lost its identity. Hiphop is not ROOTED in anything anymore. There’s no overall objective or ‘message’ in hiphop, so there’s no culture. It’s just a bunch of random rappers pulling all different ends of the rope, trying to ‘get their money’. There’s no watch dogs in the game anymore to keep a certain amount of integrity in the game. Every rapper, DJ, Producer, label exec, radio station and Website have totally absolved them selves of ANY responsibility to the culture and they’ve all taken the money and ran, and left it up to someone else to clean up the mess. Now the mess has gotten insurmountable and HipHop is ruined. Sorry for being glib but it’s the truth.
In all honesty, Hip-Hop is an artform of the past. Everyone should refer to anything nowadays as rap. What we talk about, and our topics in general aren’t rooted in the values and standards of Hip-Hop. Rap is Hip-Hop without those things
Hip hop hasn’t had a moment since circa 808s & Heartbreaks
That’s up to the people though. Even more so now that you can get music anywhere. Stop letting these fools feed you dog food.
Because the dude is rapping over a trap beat, thats why its a rap/trap song. And it isnt like he doesnt refence popular rap topics to like his belly full of lean for example.
Well the beat has a trap style bro it’s not racist and why is everything race? Lil Nas X is nothing but a new Field Mob gtfoh with that “its country music” bullshit. Song is wack and he’ll disappear like the dudes who made party like a rockstar…remember shop boyz? Lol didnt think so clown
At least Field Mob had somewhat decent lyrics. LOL
its trap because of the beat dummy. you have to be white huh?
I WILL PLACE A BET THAT POST MALONE WILL WORK WITH THIS GUY.
The shit is wack…100 percent wack…its so stupid making youngins dumber than they r
Hiphop is the only genre of music where the trashier the music, the more the labels and people support it. It’s the only profession in fact that does not support or even champion the highest form of itself. Mediocrity is what sells. Below average in skill get rewarded. The purest and most sincere hiphop gets no love. In fact, labels force the best lyricists we have to record trap records and dumb down their style. Think I’m wrong; look at J Cole the trapstar. All for a buck.
Not true at all. Mediocre rock and roll and r&b were all very popular at one point. It’s a consistent story in art in regards to true art vs aesthetics. Classic music is considered the highest form of music but the audience is very small.
Agreed. Cole is my guy but I don’t like where he’s going with this trap sound he be doing since Middle Child. I hope this Dreamville album don’t sound like that.
People need to stop even sayin Ebro’s name. Hes the biggest loser to ever be a part of the music industry. And thats a long list.
Yo on the real, fuck country music & fuck this song.Fuck Ebro too while i’m giving out fuck you’s!! At the end of the day its all opinion.
correction, fuck country music& fuck this song.& what an insult naming yourself after 1 of the greatest emcees in hip hop history,& hell no I’m not talking about lil wayne either. i said great, not whack.
