Lil Wayne Defended By Daughter After His ‘SNL’ Performance Sparks Super Bowl Jokes

Lil Wayne‘s daughter Reginae Carter has jumped to her father’s defense after some people tried to crack Super Bowl jokes on a video of his recent Saturday Night Live performance.

Weezy performed as part of SNL‘s 50th anniversary special on Sunday (February 16), with The Roots as his backup band. When The Shade Room posted a clip of their performance of his 2008 song “Mrs. Officer,” some people were giving Wayne his flowers for looking so “healthy” and “lively,”  while others felt his energy was lacking and poked fun at how he was vying to do the halftime show for Super Bowl LIX because it was in his hometown of New Orleans.

“Yall tryna set this man up talking about a Super Bowl. This is barely a performance,” one person said.

Someone else wrote: “Jay Z would have been FIRED for this. Great nostalgia though.” Another person added:  “This the n-gga ya said should’ve did the Super Bowl [laughing emoji].”

After catching wind of the feedback, Reginae was quick to hop in the comments section and clap back at anyone who had something negative to say.

“Yall are some d riders!” she wrote. “My dad been having fun performing for years! He is truly himself when he hit the stage. Go play with yall mf kids.. he collected a check after this.. what yall get for hating? Not a damn thing!”

Lil Wayne ultimately chose not to attend the Super Bowl due to being passed over for Kendrick Lamar, but instead he crashed the party with a Cetaphil commercial that revealed the release date for Tha Carter VI.

Premiered three days ahead of the big game on February 6, the ad finds Weezy reacting to missing out on the halftime show before embracing a gig for the lotion company instead. He playfully promotes the product in “dry” and “sensitive” situations, with the date 6/6/25 appearing throughout.

In the final scene, Wayne declares he won’t attend the Super Bowl as a sign reads, “DO NOT DISTURB ‘TIL 06-06-2025” with a handwritten CARTER VI.

According to Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, Wayne was actually in the running to perform at the Super Bowl before Kendrick was chosen.

She also confirmed that JAY-Z is hands-on in selecting the halftime show performer and defended their decision to go with Kendrick.

“Kendrick is the right person for the show at this moment. He’s had an incredible year, very deserving of the attention,” Perez told NOLA.com.

The Grammys also acknowledged that. That’s part of the consideration for the halftime show. Kendrick’s richness and culture is really a nod to New Orleans.”
