Lil Wayne‘s legacy continues to get bigger as he’s now set to be honored with the BMI Icon Award at the 2023 R&B/Hip-Hop Awards later this year.
The music organization’s annual awards show will go down at South Beach’s LIV Nightclub on September 6 – making for a nice early birthday present for Weezy, who will turn 41 on September 27. The event will also pay tribute to Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary.

“As a legend and superstar of Hip Hop, Lil Wayne is synonymous with the genre,” BMI vice president Catherine Brewton said in a statement. “He’s been part of the BMI family since 2002, and we’re proud to name him a BMI Icon in keeping with his reputation as one of the most influential artists of all time.
“We’re also excited to pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop with a celebration that reflects the genre’s legacy, which has infiltrated entertainment, fashion, sports and much more.”

Throughout his career, Weezy has nabbed five No. 1 albums, three No. 1 singles and five Grammys – as well as 52 BMI Awards. He was also named BMI’s R&B/Hip Hop songwriter of the year in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013 – making for only a matter of time until he finally received the Icon Award.
Previous recipients of the BMI Icon award include Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Janet Jackson, James Brown and more.

In other Lil Wayne news, the New Orleans legend finally announced that he’d been entertaining the idea of going up against someone in a Verzuz battle — and that person was himself.
“I was interested in Mixtape Weezy going against Lil Wayne,” Wayne told Rolling Stone earlier this month – noticeably using the past tense by saying “was interested.” “That would have been crazy… What other artists you think? There ain’t no other artist that can stand on the stage next to me, bro. I’m sorry.”
Wayne’s comments echo sentiments Birdman once shared when asked about the topic of a Lil Wayne Verzuz in 2021.
“Himself, Wayne versus Tunechi,” the Cash Money mogul said on the Big Facts podcast. “He got too much shit going on, he don’t need to touch that. Come on, brother, this is Tunechi. This n-gga had 100 singles in one year. He passed Elvis Presley in one year. 100 songs on Billboard, so I don’t think an individual could top that. The work Wayne put into it, I wouldn’t even play with that shit.”
