In June 2022, Lil Tjay was shot seven times at a Chipotle in Edgewater, New Jersey and was subsequently rushed to hospital for an emergency surgery. The shooting was the result of an armed robbery.

The New York City native was struck once in the neck, once in the arm and five times in the torso. He was very close to death, but immediate treatment ultimately saved his life.

On June 22, 2023, which was the one-year anniversary of the shooting, he released a retrospective track titled “June 22.” The song — which also features on his new album — is a reflection of Tjay’s experience with being attacked.

On it, he takes an introspective approach toward the moments leading up to the nearly-fatal shooting and he relieves the tragedy in its accompanying music video.
