Lil Durk has always been close to his hometown of Chicago, even with its rough spots, and decided to attend the inaugural celebration for the city’s new mayor.

On Monday (May 15), Lil Durk was spotted at the swearing-in ceremony for Chicago’s new mayor, Brandon Johnson. Afterwards, they posed for photos together, shook hands, and chatted briefly.

Prior to this, the rapper had sat down with the new mayor to discuss different ways they can save kids’ lives around his hometown. “The Voice,” as Durk calls himself, is always looking for new ways to use it and give back to his community.

A new chapter seems to be beginning for Lil Durk. Recently, the rapper released a J.Cole-assisted inspirational song, complete with children singing the chorus entitled, “All My Life.”

It is clear from the lyrics that he is trying to change his public perception.

“I decided I had to finish/But the media called me a menace,” Durk raps. “I done sat with the mayor and politicians, I’m tryna change the image/You can’t blame my past no more, I come from the trenches/Some said I’d never be a superstar, but I know I’m different (No, no, no)/I’m The Voice, but the system ain’t give me a choice.”

J. Cole follows up with a verse about gun violence and the growing trend of young rappers dying: “These days seein’ rappers be dyin’/Way before they even gettin’ they shine/I never even heard of lil’ buddy/’Til somebody murdered lil’ buddy/Now I’m on the phone, searchin’ lil’ buddy name.”

Durk recently admitted that Cole “smoked” him on the new track, which is something the Chicago rapper says “barely happens” to him.

The OTF frontman spoke about the new collaboration in an interview with Complex at his release party last week and revealed that Cole bodied him on his own song.

“He smoked my ass on that one, for one — barely,” Smurk said when asked about his experience working with the Dreamville don. “That barely happens. But shout out to J. Cole, shout out to [Dr.] Luke, we made it happen.”

Produced by controversial pop hitmaker Dr. Luke, “All My Life” serves as the lead single from Lil Durk’s upcoming album Almost Healed, which is set to drop on May 26.
