Kid CuDi Lambasts Label For Under Shipping Physical Copies Of “WZRD”

With today being the release of Kid CuDi and Dot Da Genius’s long-awaited rock album WZRD, one would assume that neither artist would have reason to complain. CuDi, however, took to Twitter today to air out his label Universal Republic, who he said under shipped copies of the LP to stores.

According a recent rant on his Twitter feed, CuDi blasted Universal Republic for only shipping 55,000 copies of WZRD to stores, as well as failing to secure radio play for the LP’s lead single Teleport 2 Me, Jamie.” As a result, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper said that he will suspend the release of the third installment of his critically acclaimed Man On the Moon series until 2014.

Ok so just a heads up, my weak ass label only shipped 55k physicals cuz they treated this like some indie side project tax right off,” Cudi wrote. “So i apologize on behalf of my weak ass major label. And I apologize for the lack of promo, again, my weak ass major label. They tried to rush me thru this so i can just give em another MOTM, but guess what? Fuck that, next album is WZRD. MOTM3 on hold til 2014. who mad??? not me and @DotDaGenius.”

He added, “So its def gonna be tough to find one in the stores guys, I’m sorry about that. I gotta go out and find one too, becuz my weak ass label never even gave us a copy of our own album. FAIL!!! Im lettin Universal Republic have it, fuck it. What they gon’ do, spank me?? hahahaha. AND Teleport 2 Me, Jamie aint on the radio!!!! like helloooooooooo????? HIT HIT HIT!!!”

Despite the lack of promotion for the project, reports indicate that WZRD debuted at number one today on iTunes

    1. Fuck the Majors start and Indie label or join a big indie label, majors are just trying to fuck any artist that tries to control how they want to create there music. They think they can control the influence artist have on the public. They are the controllers and they must be dealt with. Fuck majors labels!!!

      1. I agree wit you here. Indie is where the money is. You don’t have to sell millions of records to make profit. Hell if you sell 150k thats over 1 million in revenue

    2. Fuckin majors are wack. If ur not making those radio friendly jingles like all those other wack ass faggot rappers then they’ll undership ur cd so it look like you flop so they dont have to give you no hype until you release some wack radio shit. The game is fucked up and Cudi isnt the only rapper whos album has been undershipped. Word to all the real niggas on labels if you dont got a radio friendly song, the majors gonna fuck you in the ass.

    3. Makes sense, mad at your label, punish your fans. I understand the drama, but why is it that most artists resort to tactics that end up punishing their fans, instead of their labels? As if Universal Republic is relying on Cudi to survive. Fail on Cudi’s part.

    4. WZRD is pretty dope, but I want another MoTM. WZRD was a good side project, but I hope he doesn’t continue down that path, I like him better as a rapper.

    5. The homie ‘Ye should go to bat for Cudi here. His label seriously let him down. Personally, I was going to go and buy the album today, but since I heard it was undershipped, I’m not gonna bother.

      1. TyrannicalT, what you said makes no sense… Because his label let him down you’re not going to buy his album? Where the hell is the logic behind that?

      1. Wale still sold 220,000 of AD, so the label still shipped out more units. Wale had major promotion (Gaga single) and exposure (websites, tv, etc) and controversy (girls video) and the fans were not responding at the cash registers.

Not the same as this issue here.

    6. I’m all for artists doing what they want to creatively and following their own muse, but… I want another Man on the Moon album.

    7. Dear Robots:

There is no way that Cudi received the recording budget, made the music and didn’t make or receive a copy for himself (when he knows labels buyback copies for promo), and didn’t know that when the project would be released on Universal Republic, which is a small imprint label on Universal (same Nas/Damian did, but they didn’t complain, they went on 2 worldwide tours) that the actual meager amount of units processed would be the result.

Cudi has been in the industry long enough to know you don’t wait for the label 2 promote, YOU do it.

Believe this BS spin Cudi is saying if you want to.

    8. Cudi should be happy… It could have been worse. His label could’ve only shipped 42 albums like the new Too Short…

    9. fuck….no rap cudi till 2014! got damn how long till a kid named cudi comes back. WZRD was cool, but rap cudi is revolutionary.

    10. first off be more creative and come up with a name for your next album (lil wayne) stop doin stupid sequels. second this is BS just some ploy so when this shit flops he can be like oh there were only 55k in stores thats why sales so low. i bet it doesnt even sell that many.

      1. if it dont its because people downloaded it illegally.dont think that just because an album dont sell means that no1 is bumpin it

    11. LOL @ this dude throwing a temper tantrum

“IM NOT PUTTING OUT MOTM 3 TILL 2014”

LOL, yeah bitch and lets see if they let you release another of these projects, your under contract kid they could hold you hostage for life like 50 is doing Young Buck if they really felt like it, and not let you release shit

Get your emotions and check and use some logic

      1. You need to use some logic, he’s releasing it on 2014 likely cause its the last year of his contract, and after that he can sign with anyone and release as many projects as he wants. Either way it really doesn’t work like 50 towards Buck, that’s different and Buck is dirtbroke too

    12. Kids: When they say “My label failed to secure radio play” that means. The label didnt give Clear Channel or any other conglomerate 50-200 thousand bucks to get a song into rotation.

So next time you send your song to the radio thinking theyll play your shit. Think again dumbfucks. You pay for play.

    13. The album is horrible. He’s lucky they shipped anything. His fans wouldn’t know good music if it kicked their ass. Which they need because what he makes can barely be called music.

He can’t sing. At all.The tracks on this album are an ear ache.

That’s why his label did this. Only the biggest cudi dickeater can get through this garbage.

I’d rather listen to pots banging putting away the dishes than this.

    14. looks like the same thing has happend with ja rules pil2 i looked everywhere for that album and couldent find it anywhere looks like im gonna have to get it on itunes but i would rather have the hard copy

    15. Cudi acting like GOOD music needs him or something. Go ahead and delay MOTM 3 for 2014, if he hasnt fell off,or gets dropped by the label by then.

    16. WHO GIVES A FUCK THIS LAME WONT BE AROUND MUCH LONGER WHEN HIS LABEL DROPS HIM ALSO IM SURE THERE’S A LIMITED AMOUNT OF PEOPLE LOOKING TO BUY WZRD OUT THE STORE

    17. I cant stand people who throw temper tantrums in public, you got beef with your label settle it with them or in court, dont go on twitter looking for sympathy

      1. Shut up, here you are throwing a temper tantrum over someone else throwing a temper tantrum. Your just a self hating hypocrite. Go suck something and fall on something sharp!

    18. I for one am a big fan of Kid Cudis work and Im sure I will buy this new album. On the flip side, artists have to realize how the recording industry works. Just because the label only distributed 55 k records, doesnt mean they didnt want to ship more or dont believe in the album. In some cases, retail stores are hesitant to overstock the product in fear of high returns. No matter how hard the label tries to push an album, retailers simply wont buy anymore until they see the initial results. While this could be the problem, I accept the possibility that the record label might have low expectations for Cudis emergence in the rock genre. Perhaps the Label is playing it safe in a time of declining CD sales and is playing a conservative roll with their efforts. On the contrary, Kid Cudi has generated tons of money for the label and perhaps they should show him some love when he decides to think outside of the box. Even so, one thing the labels do realize is the ongoing shift to a digital world. Even if the 55k physic al CDs are all purchased, consumers can still acquire the digital album from ITunes. Since this album is outside of the original style of Kid Cudi, consumers might be more prone to purchasing the album/singles from ITunes. I for one am very interested how this situation pans out and I hope the best for Kid Cudi!
