With today being the release of Kid CuDi and Dot Da Genius’s long-awaited rock album WZRD, one would assume that neither artist would have reason to complain. CuDi, however, took to Twitter today to air out his label Universal Republic, who he said under shipped copies of the LP to stores.
According a recent rant on his Twitter feed, CuDi blasted Universal Republic for only shipping 55,000 copies of WZRD to stores, as well as failing to secure radio play for the LP’s lead single “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie.” As a result, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper said that he will suspend the release of the third installment of his critically acclaimed Man On the Moon series until 2014.
“Ok so just a heads up, my weak ass label only shipped 55k physicals cuz they treated this like some indie side project tax right off,” Cudi wrote. “So i apologize on behalf of my weak ass major label. And I apologize for the lack of promo, again, my weak ass major label. They tried to rush me thru this so i can just give em another MOTM, but guess what? Fuck that, next album is WZRD. MOTM3 on hold til 2014. who mad??? not me and @DotDaGenius.”
He added, “So its def gonna be tough to find one in the stores guys, I’m sorry about that. I gotta go out and find one too, becuz my weak ass label never even gave us a copy of our own album. FAIL!!! Im lettin Universal Republic have it, fuck it. What they gon’ do, spank me?? hahahaha. AND Teleport 2 Me, Jamie aint on the radio!!!! like helloooooooooo????? HIT HIT HIT!!!”
Despite the lack of promotion for the project, reports indicate that WZRD debuted at number one today on iTunes.

Fuck the Majors start and Indie label or join a big indie label, majors are just trying to fuck any artist that tries to control how they want to create there music. WZRD is pretty dope, but I want another MoTM. WZRD was a good side project, but I hope he doesn’t continue down that path, I like him better as a rapper.

Wale still sold 220,000 of AD, so the label still shipped out more units. Wale had major promotion (Gaga single) and exposure (websites, tv, etc) and controversy (girls video) and the fans were not responding at the cash registers.

There is no way that Cudi received the recording budget, made the music and didn’t make or receive a copy for himself (when he knows labels buyback copies for promo), and didn’t know that when the project would be released on Universal Republic, which is a small imprint label on Universal (same Nas/Damian did, but they didn’t complain, they went on 2 worldwide tours) that the actual meager amount of units processed would be the result.
Cudi has been in the industry long enough to know you don’t wait for the label 2 promote, YOU do it.

I for one am a big fan of Kid Cudis work and Im sure I will buy this new album. On the flip side, artists have to realize how the recording industry works. Just because the label only distributed 55 k records, doesnt mean they didnt want to ship more or dont believe in the album. In some cases, retail stores are hesitant to overstock the product in fear of high returns. No matter how hard the label tries to push an album, retailers simply wont buy anymore until they see the initial results. While this could be the problem, I accept the possibility that the record label might have low expectations for Cudis emergence in the rock genre. Perhaps the Label is playing it safe in a time of declining CD sales and is playing a conservative roll with their efforts. On the contrary, Kid Cudi has generated tons of money for the label and perhaps they should show him some love when he decides to think outside of the box. Even so, one thing the labels do realize is the ongoing shift to a digital world. Even if the 55k physic al CDs are all purchased, consumers can still acquire the digital album from ITunes. Since this album is outside of the original style of Kid Cudi, consumers might be more prone to purchasing the album/singles from ITunes. I for one am very interested how this situation pans out and I hope the best for Kid Cudi!
