Kendrick Lamar Signs Long-Term Deal With BMI

Kendrick Lamar has inked a publishing deal with Broadcast Music, Inc. to represent his music catalog worldwide. The Hip Hop superstar has agreed to a long-term pact with the performing rights organization, which boasts a roster of more than 900,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.

Mike Steinberg, BMI’s EVP of Creative & Licensing, spoke about the organization’s new partnership with Lamar in a press statement issued on Monday (April 29).

“We’re thrilled to welcome Kendrick to the BMI family and expand our great working relationship with Top Dawg Entertainment and its incredibly talented roster,” Steinberg said. “Kendrick’s gift for writing and performing such stunningly impactful music has solidified his stature among the world’s greatest artists and, without a doubt, as a major force in our industry for many years to come. We’re honored that he has chosen BMI to represent his creative works.”

Lamar was previously signed to a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music. He now joins fellow TDE artists SZA, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Isaiah Rashad and Lance Skiiiwalker — as well as his label’s CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith — at BMI.

Other notable Hip Hop and R&B acts represented by BMI include Rihanna, Post Malone and Khalid.

    1. so these record labels hold down the black man or hold down everybody. its a party from here on out. everybody knows each artist doesn’t have their own creative control. that should change.

      1. It’s a choice to sell out. Plenty of great independent artists, or actually good labels, such as Rhymesayers. Kendrick and TDE are sellouts. I remember back when Kendrick was referred to as the reincarnated Tupac. Listening to him now, Kendrick is better suited to be on YMCMB along side weezy and drake. My opinion of him has plummeted, and I still think his old music is amazing. Qs new album is radio too, so was Jay Rocks redemption,Ab-soul hasn’t had anything amazing since Control System, and Isaiha Rashads best work so far was Cilia Demo. It’s been a while since TDE has true, classic hip-hop. I’d say Oxymoron, Blank Face, GKMC, Control System, Section .80, Follow me home, 90059, and Cilvia Demo make the cut for being amazing hip-hop. I like some others, but all of those have fantastic playback value. Still loving control system, section 80, and oxymoron/blabk face.

        1. Both of y’all are exaggerating in my opinion. TDE is still putting out some of the best music and are widely known throughout the industry as a creator friendly label. But, to each his own.

          1. Yep, it’s all just tastes. But I think Kendrick made Q sound like young money artists these days, where is they used to be more like a modern death row records.

            1. It’s not a literal sound smart-ass, it’s an essence and subject matter. Death Row had the best west coat rap roaster. TDE was too.

        2. Couldn’t have said it better section 80 was his best work and yea i thought he was smarter thought he would fight for his own publishing

    2. Kendrick Lamar is a poor man’s Jay Electronica, Jay Elect with half a bar disturbs the frequency radiation attacking mankind from Saturn.
