This morning, Kanye West released new track “Christian Dior Denim Flow” as his latest part of G.O.O.D Friday. It was three years ago, and just under a month that Kanye West and 50 Cent wagered a sales war. Both released on September 11, 2007, West accepted the challenge from 50 Cent that he would retire if the Chicago production/emcee phenom would outsell him in first week numbers. In the three months between announcement and the releases, the competition was intensified with media soundbytes, namely 50 Cent saying he thought Kanye West “sucks.” Announced in mid September, it was confirmed: Kanye’s Graduation out-sold 50’s Curtis both in first week, and continues to do so in overall numbers, 50 Cent did not keep his word, having released several group and solo albums since.
The impact of the ’07 sales battle arguablt fell far short of its hype. 50 Cent did not retire, Kanye West did not gloat of his victory, and both G.O.O.D Music and G-Unit Records continued business as usual. However, as the last three years of Hip Hop have celebrated rival collaborations – Jay-Z and Lil Wayne (“Hello Brooklyn”), Royce Da 5’9″ and Joe Budden (“Slaughterhouse”), Ludacris and T.I. (“On Top of The World”), the two superstars have yet to release collaborative work, leading some to question if there was bitterness.
Released early this morning as a late-pass edition to “G.O.O.D Friday,” (after initial reports that this week’s release would not happen) “Christian Dior Denim Flow” by Kanye West featuring Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Lloyd Banks, John Legend and Ryan Leslie perhaps proves that there is no hard feelings between West and the G-Unit camp.
The song is the first of several rumored collaborations between West and the G-Unit member Lloyd Banks. 50 Cent had tweeted about West’s involvement on Banks’ The Hunger For More 2. Additionally, 50 Cent revealed that he and West had previously worked together, on very fan-friendly material that the Queens, New York mogul had curiously omitted from both Curtis and 2009’s Before I Self Destruct. After the success of West’s recent G.O.O.D Friday lead-up to his presently untitled fifth album, Banks has also announced “Blue Fridays,” with leaks of his own.
