Kanye West and JAY-Z may have briefly reunited on 2020’s “Jail,” even teasing a Watch the Throne sequel, but the making of the song was not as smooth as some may think.
The increasingly controversial rap legend revealed on X on Sunday (April 20) that he and Hov butted heads over his former mentor’s verse on the Donda track — specifically Jay’s critique of his support for Donald Trump.

“Hol’ up, Donda, I’m with your baby when I touch back road / Told him, ‘Stop all of that red cap, we goin’ home,'” Hov rapped on the song, referencing Ye’s penchant for wearing a red Make American Great Again hat at the time.
Revisiting the friction surrounding the collaboration, Kanye tweeted: “Why did Jay Z have to say ‘no red hat’ on ‘Jail.’ That shit tore me to my soul. We fought about it and he told me either leave that line on there or take my verse off.”
The Chicago native then suggested that JAY-Z’s lyrics were part of a larger conspiracy against him, asking his followers: “Me wearing the red hat was the most stand out example of me going against ‘the program.’ Do you guys think he was instructed to say that?”
Kanye West has made a number of inflammatory remarks about JAY-Z in recent weeks, further straining their already complicated relationship.
During an explosive social media rant last month, he attacked Hov and Beyoncé’s youngest children, 7-year-old twins Rumi and Sar, by calling them “retarded.”

Kanye was widely condemned for his comments, including by Suge Knight, and later apologized to his former collaborator, admitting that he “felt bad about my tweet.”
Neither Jay nor Bey have publicly responded, although it was reported that the couple were exploring taking legal action against West.
Despite his apology, the G.O.O.D. Music founder has continued to air out his issues with Jigga, saying he felt betrayed by the lack of love and support from his Big Brother over the last decade.
“I ALWAYS FELT LIKE THE BLACK SHEEP. LIKE I WANTED FAMILY IN THIS MUSIC SHIT. I’D RUN ON STAGES THINKING I WAS DOING THE RIGHT THING AND [IT] WOULD ALWAYS BE A SLIGHT HOV NOT COMING TO MY FIRST WEDDING,” he vented on X.

“HIM PUTTING KENDRICK ON THE SUPERBOWL OVER ME OR EVEN US NEVER BEING INVITED TO SHIT. TAKING JABS ABOUT MY RED HAT ON DONDA. I FELT LIKE BOTH HIM AND HIS WIFE COULD HAVE HELPED ME HAVE MORE LEVERAGE WITH MY KIDS,” he added, referencing his custody battle with ex-wife Kim Kardashian.
“THEY COULD HAVE USED THEIR CULTURAL POSITION TO NOT JUST WATCH THE KARDASHIANS RUN ME OVER. SHIT HURTS SO FUCK BOTH OF THEM CAUSE WHEN I NEEDED THEM IT WAS FUCK ME.”
