Kanye West Addresses Homophobia In Unearthed Video

Kanye West spoke out against homophobia in Hip Hop in an interview with Sway that debuted on MTV News 10 years ago.

“Everybody in Hip Hop discriminates against gay people,” Kanye West says in the video from 2005. “Matter of fact, the exact opposite word of ’Hip Hop,’ I think, is ’gay.’ You play a record and if it’s wack, ‘That’s gay, dog!. And I wanna just come on TV and just tell my rappers, just tell my friends, ‘Yo, stop it fam. That’s discrimination.’”

Kanye West says that when he was in high school he was surrounded by homophobia. It was the status-quo.

“Everyone in high school is like, ‘You actin like a fag. Yo, you gay,’” Kanye West says. “It made me homophobic.”

This attitude led to more discrimination from the likes of West and his thugged-out friends.

“Anybody that was gay I was like, ‘Yo, get away from me,’” Kanye West says. “It’s like I was racing to try to find that constant masculine role model right there, right in front of me. I would use the word ‘fag’ and always look down upon gays.”

Kanye West’s mentality changed once he found out that a family member of his was gay.

“My cousin told me another one of my cousins is gay that was the turning point,” Kanye West says. “This is my cousin. I love him. Do I discriminate against my cousin?”

Last month, Kanye West appeared on I Am Cait, which focuses on the new identity of his former father-in-law Bruce Jenner, and expressed this open-mindedness.

“I think this one of the strongest things that’s happened in our existence as human beings that are so controlled by perception,” Kanye West says in a video clip. “Cuz you couldn’t have been up against more. Your daughter is a supermodel. You’re a celebrity. Every type of thing and it was still like, ‘Fuck everybody. This is who I am.’”

    1. Praise Kanye for this interview. Society as a whole (including hiphop) bashes sexuality. I’m straight and have never truly hated the gay community, but growing up I said hurtful things out of habit based on my perspective of those around me (mainly the influence of school kids & hiphop). When I discovered my aunt was gay it made me stop and think about what I was saying.

Never did hate, but society mislead me in terms of slang and being slightly too defensive. I’m glad gay marriage is now legal in the US. Everyone deserves to be happy.

      1. PahiphopFAN said: “Society as a whole (including hiphop) bashes sexuality”…. Umm what? Have you ever seen a Hip Hop video and the ‘booty models’? Don’t act like all the girls in Hip Hop videos and Hollywood movies are covered in Burqa’s from Head to Toe, so how exactly is society against sexuality when Porn and Playboy magazines are legal and sexuality is being promoted everywhere, even in school.

        You don’t make no sense

    2. Some are only happy to be gay so they can get what they want. And then showoff to people who never liked them anyway. Its up to them what they do with their talent, but youre not suppose to hide your talent regardless

      1. Why waste time and energy hating on the gays, there’s no “profit” in that, and if there’s no profit to gain then aren’t you just being mentally-retar.ded?

    3. Seems I was wrong Kanye is a very smart guy, can’t judge a person by the color of their skin, I was like that with the attack on the gays too until I realized my friends were stupid and I started listening to smarter more evolved people.

    4. I remember watching this when I was 16. All eyes on kanye west when he was ready to release late registration. I remember thinking kanye is the gay rapper. No problem with that. Kimye is a business transaction.

    5. For people who have been discriminated against for for the color of their skin, they should be last to discriminate against others. Should have empathy.

      1. When have gays been discriminated against? Were they enslaved? Systematically oppressed? Physically, mentally, spiritually, economically abused? Or do they demand acceptance? Are they engaging in an attempt to have government force people to condone their lifestyle choices? If your a thief and I believe stealing is wrong am I discriminating against you? Now kids being picked on for being gay or ascribing negative connotations to behavior deemed as gay isn’t cool at all but that does not equal being systematically discriminated against. Flip it and bounce it however you want but the LGBT community has not suffered anything equitable to true discrimination. People are teased or bullied for tons of reasons, weight, height, attractiveness etc, none of which is good , but also not discrimination.

      2. It’s still legal to not hire, and deny someone housing on the basis of one’s sexual orientation in half the states in the U.S. Being able to deny certain groups of people housing and work is systemic oppression. There are 79 countries in the world where being gay is illegal and punishable by death. That’s oppression. Keep in mind that’s as of August, 23, 2015.

      3. THANK YOU! That had been my point. A lot of ignorant people out there have the nerve to hate when we’re being hating on because of our skin.

    6. I read about this in early 2006. Nothing new here. Kanye, I stan for you dawg and I’ve bought every physical copy of your albums up to Yeezus but being gay is a sin. God condemns it. Being gay is a choice. A satanistic choice

      1. If you think being gay is a choice, than not being gay is a choice you must have made. If you are making a choice not to be gay than clearly you have some homosexual tendencies you’re deciding not to satisfy. Anyone who is actually straight knows it’s not a choice and all the homophobes are just struggling with their own desires

    7. The mighty Yeezus stands for believing in and being yourself and loving others. I’m not gay myself, but I don’t hate gay people. Just let them live their lives and stop discriminating. #AllHailYeezus

      1. I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re a fucking idiot.

Actually, my bad. I hope you do take it the wrong way.

    8. It’s sad to think in 2015 that the same shit he (and I) experienced growing up is most likely still the same thing. Although I’m not in touch with what’s going on in high school, I see this blatant homophobia going on online all the time, and it’s sad. Whether or not you’re actually a homophobic weirdo or you’re just trying to be a troll, it’s wrong and it’s lame, and it’s not at all funny to adults (and I don’t mean “people over 18”; I mean “people with a grown mentality”).

    9. Penis goes in the vagina and makes babies. Its really simple to tell that homosexuality is not the way humans were intended to be. A homosexual relationship is always centered around lust, have you ever heard of a gay couple that waits for marriage? No. But they want to be married under God, who in a lot of cases they don’t even believe in. Think about that. Homosexuality is the work of the devil and that’s why we see articles like this and so many gay people on tv. People claim religion is shoved down their throats but don’t stop and think about how this gay propaghanda among many other things are brainwashing people. It is very clear to me that there is an agenda being pushed and homosexuality is part of it.

      1. A few questions for you. Why is it that the only way to stimulate a man’s g-spot is to shove things up his ass? If you believe that some God created us why did he create men in such a way that they can orgasm by having their prostate as well as their dick stimulated? Are you opposed to men having anal sex with women? Why is it that all the anti-gay focus is on male couples rather than female couples? Why is it that Bhuddists never feel the need to tell me what their God believes I should be doing and Christians can never seem to shut the fuck up about what their God wants me to do?
