Jon Connor Reportedly Signs To Aftermath

As reported by HipHopDX yesterday (September 28), Flint, Michigan native emcee Jon Connor participated in BET’s annual Hip Hop Awards cypher alongside Wax, Rapsody, Emis Killa and Rittz at a taping that took place in Atlanta. Connor was grouped in the first of eight cyphers scheduled to air on BET on October 15 at 8 pm EST. Other cypher participants included Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson and Kevin Hart amongst others.

According to a Tweet and consequent report by Rap Radar, Connor announced his being signed to Aftermath by Dr. Dre during the filming of the segment as a part of his cypher verse. The news was also confirmed by blogger Karen Civil who was also in attendance.

The news comes just months after pictures and reports of Connor and Dr. Dre together in the studio. In an interview with MLive, Connor admitted the pride he felt in Dre’s approval. “He was excited about the respect he had for my artistry,” he said. “Dre is a very particular person. He knows what he wants to hear,” Connor said. “…I made it through Dr. Dre’s chopping block of potential. Just to know he sees something in me, or that he respects what I do, or has an appreciation for what I bring to hip-hop, is something I put on my mantle.”

Connor’s meeting the West Coast legend was a product of a 2012 fall tour with Xzibit who eventually helped the two get in contact. Connor continued by describing the learning experience that has resulted out of working alongside the Beats headphone founder and CEO. “Any time I’m around him is constant growth for me,” he said. “He’s an inspirational person, he truly is. Anything and everything out his mouth is something to learn from.”

Connor has released a slew of mixtapes and music that included 2011’s Salvation and culminated in his retail debut this past July with Unconscious State. Unconscious State charted at number 35 on Billboard’s Top 200 the second week after its release.

“I cleared out all y’all that got in the way,” Connor raps in the cypher. “And y’all knew that I was ill, but now my doctor is Dre.”

    2. Royce probably helped him as well, since they’re both from Michigan and they did a song together a couple of months ago.

    3. I hope he is successful, but Slim Da Mobster also passed Dr. dres chopping block of potential and look what happened to him.

      1. thats his own fault for not keeping his fucking mouth shut

        JON CONNOR 2014

    7. Dope mc don’t have much faith in getting a release date very soon but better than just mixtape grinding.

And yes I know he released an album b4 u fuck-boys start talkin shit

      1. slim back around the way, being looked at funny for doing business with an fbi informant jimmy henchmen and an undercover alphabet boy

    8. HAHAHAHA. Good luck Jon. You just signed yourself to be a taxwrite off for aftermath. If he signed to MMG, he would be a top priority for the label.

    9. I’ve been a big fan of Jon Connor for like a year now. He’s 1 of the illest niggaz in the game right now lyrically. He aint the best songwriter for radio hits but he can rap his ass off. Him & Kendrick on a track would just be crazy

    10. couldn’t be happier for the guy. underrated emcee, one of the realest dudes out there. Been following him for years so its nice he finally had his work pay off.

      1. ^^^HAHAHAHAHA!!! You ain’t have shit to say because you already got a dick in yo mouth…..and two in yo ass….homo.

    11. No worries folks, I’ve been following Connor for quite a while now. He is a true lyrical assassin whom’s songwriting skills are improving as well. Trust me, he won’t be shelved.

      – Anonymous-

      1. Says the nigga who don’t even has the intelligence to come up with a nickname other than “Anonymous”.

      2. a nigga callin himself Lester the Molester wants to get at someone for not being smart enough to come up with a name for an internet comment

      1. Game’s laughing his ass off. Connor will be very lucky to ever put an album out since Dre doesn’t usually bother releasing their albums. K Dot had to convince him numerous times. Game will be able to release as many albums as he want.

      2. That’s a lie. Dre allows all of his artists to take time with their albums; Kendrick could put his album out anytime he wants, so Conner will be good. Game would be lucky to see his first single released because he’ll never put out an album just like the other 99 Cash Money artists.

      3. ^^:

Allowing your artists to “take time with their albums” is one thing; actually RELEASING their albums is another. Take a look back and see how many artists Dre has signed and eventually had to drop cause he just wouldn’t put their albums out. At the end the only acts Dre has really supported are Em and 50; he only dropped Kendrick’s album cause the hype around it was huge, and I mean H-U-G-E. Dude was being called the greatest rapper of his time and shit, so there was just no way Dre could afford to shelve this one.

      4. I think we can all agree that Birdman and Dre both got stables of niccas who never gonna get a release date,

      5. The big difference is that Birdman’s artists are striving to put out the best albums possible and they only commit to the best ones. Any albums less than perfect, they usually restart. Dre’s artists are abused by Dr Dre and they suffer emotional abuse.

    12. In the last 15 years aftermath has released albums by 5 artists : Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game, Kendrick Lamar and that chick Truth Hurts who came and went. Meanwhile, they’ve signed about 100 others who wound up on the shelf doing nothing. Odds are against Jon Connor to say the least, hope I’m wrong tho

    13. Connor reping FLint like me knew him from back in the highschool days . Hope he make it. But Dre will put a album out if its worth making. busta came out eve and everyone else, Bishop Lamont wasa lazy artis who couldnt make a hit song just a good mixtape artist

    14. We all know he ain’t gonna make it: nigga has no personality, and his rhymes are not all that spectacular. This gon probably be the first and last time y’all will hear about him.

    15. Ya’ll sitting in these damn comments talking shit about how he’ll never drop an album, but he’s already done more than most of your asses. People on here don’t even know Connor, the dude started out passing his CD’s out himself, created his own buzz, got his own name out there. This dudes a grinder and willing to put in the work. Trust me, he’s hungry and he will drop his album. Anybody from Flint know’s how hard Connor works. 810

      1. thats all great and everything but do you think all those artists dr dre signed and didnt put out didnt put it work and grind??? we’re just saying the odds of him ever getting a release date from Dr Dre are like 1/10

    16. That’s sucks cuz his album is never going to come out if he signed there. they are worse than Bad Boy is too their artist anybody see Glasses Malone etc anywhere?

      1. Glasses Malone is signed to Cash Money, and he put an album out last year but it didn’t do well at all, so you should blame Birdman for that.
