John Givez has become one of the top up-and-coming lyrical emcees on the West Coast and his message is impressive.
Recently sitting down with HipHopDX Senior News Writer Victoria Hernandez, Givez talked about his recent song, “2004.”
“That was like the year before one of our good friends passed away and we was doing a bunch of stuff we wasn’t supposed to be doing in that year and it was all fun at first,” he said via a segment of today’s (October 27) DX Daily. “It was new stuff to do.”
John Givez also talked about how his friend passing away changed his course in life.
“It was a reality check but at the same time it kind of made me go more into it,” he explained. “He passed away trying to sell grass to somebody but it was actually grass rather than marijuana and it got him into a bad situation where he got stabbed and he was drinking so they couldn’t stop his blood from flowing. It was a reality check about the lifestyle while we decided to choose.”

Just got done researching this dude. That 4 Seasons project he previously put out is top notch…. very very impressed. Strong lyrical substance, great song structure, and can actually sing without any conveyance of feeling corny or too mainstream yet thought provoking and soulful. This dude has range, which is rarely displayed in Hip-Hop. In otherwords, for a Christian hip-hop artist, John Givez can easily blur the line between secular and spiritual without coming off sounding too preachy or too blinded by the hood.
After hearing previous songs like “Dumb It Down”, “American Dream”, “The Light”, “Little Engine”, and “Flex” (all mentioned being instant favorites), should John continue to create songs in this dynamic, I have absolutely no doubt of his ability of making anyone who listens to him a believer, whether it be his message or skill… or both. And I’m sure there’ll be a few comparisons to Kendrick Lamar. But in my honest opinion, John might be just a few steps ahead of Kendrick in all aspects.
I suppose I’ll be hearing alot more of him from this point on. Yeah…. I’m very impressed.
Yeah John is so solid! Check out the other Kings Dream artists, Beleaf and Ruslan, too. The three of them form a group called the Dream Junkies. They are all so talented and bring something fresh to the game. Thanks for reading!
