JAY-Z & Mariah Carey’s ‘Explosive’ Meeting Ends With The Multi-Platinum Singer Leaving Roc Nation

JAY-Z and Mariah Carey collaborated on the 1999 single “Heartbreaker” and have been friends ever since. In 2017, she signed with Roc Nation management, years after firing manager Stella Bulochnikov.

But according to The Sun, JAY-Z and Mariah Carey’s business relationship has come to an unceremonious end. The two superstars reportedly got into a “huge fight” over the future of her career that ended with Carey leaving the company.

A source said, “Mariah and Jay had an explosive meeting which did not go well at all. She has made it clear she wants nothing more to do with him and has called it quits with Roc Nation. She will formally depart in the next few weeks. It is a shame because they had done some great work in the last few years. But this meeting couldn’t have gone much worse.”

Mariah Carey’s name has been removed from the Roc Nation management segment of the website, suggesting the split was immediate. Carey is supposedly working on “a heavily R&B-influenced album” and another world tour set for this year. The source added she’s already been talking to other managers and is focused on her next steps.

Over the last few years, Carey has released her 30th anniversary album The Rarities as well as her New York Times bestselling memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

In a 2018 interview with V Magazine, Carey opened up about what led to the “Heartbreaker” collaboration.

“We were at Mr. Chow’s in New York — this is before everybody in the world knew who he was,” she recalled of their early days. “But we lovers of Hip Hop knew who he was and were very in awe of him, his talent, where he came from, his whole story and everything. So we talked that night and ended up collaborating.”

In addition to “Heartbreaker,” the pair also teamed up for “Things That U Do” from JAY-Z’s 1999 album Volume 3…Life & Times Of S. Carter.

    1. Jay-Z is so sketchy. The guy sold out his family by cheating and then his race with the whole we are past kneeling thing. Most of the artists at def jam hated him bc he spent $25 million towards his own album and gave nothing for most of the others.

      1. Yall sum salty ass haters lmfao jay doing business. We ARE passed kneeling fuck is you talking about lmao

        1. Yourr such a stan you can’t even see what a snake he is. The guy didn’t even spare his own family.

    2. I seriously doubt it was even a fight. Mariah probably wanted to go back to Sony because they own her masters. Jay was more than happy to let her go for a fee because she had been lying dormant on the Roc Nation roster. Probably took 10 minutes max to take care of. The rest their meeting was just about them having a laugh and catching up.

      1. Roc Nation is distributed by Sony. This has nothing to do with that. This is a management deal.

    3. She should have never been on Roc Nation in the first place. Her being on RN increased their leverage not hers. Roc Nation is not a terrible company but also not great. Rihanna will soon leave too. Roc Nation is flooded with too many artist, rappers, singers keep signing with them because of the name but aren’t get any benefits.

    4. jayz all a sudden wanna start appearing out of the ground now that Nets in the playoffs, don’t get the big head because X put you on Nas made you hot, now you walking around like some big shot ha pssy

      1. None of this makes sense. NOBODY put Jay on, which is why Rocafella is a thing. His issue with Nas was because he WOULDN’T make him hot by getting on Reasonable Doubt. FOH

    5. She’s just not as big as she used to be, her music time passed but she still looks good obviously. She probably figured out she can make more $ elsewhere.

      1. We don’t have to worry about her incomes anyway. She keep getting that Christmas money every single year.

    6. Well, we don’t need Mariah’s washed up ass anyway. She can go join Ass Appeal with baby money Nas and all the other flop artists on that label. It’s the ROC in here!

    7. Jayz’s music has not aged well. All those brand name references date the shit out of it. Plus as you get older, a guy constantly bragging bout how much money he has seems so low class and makes you feel like he’s really insecure. I’ll take Pacs music which is timeless because its about the larger themes in life like love, hate and the struggle

    8. Jay a music is still fire but what I dont understand is why is it when people speak on him, they comparing him to other rappers, instead of just giving him his flowers.

    9. ” this is before everybody in the world knew who he was,” – Heartbreaker came out in September of ’99. Jay’s 3rd album, Vol.2/Hard Knock Life LP, which sold ONLY about 5 MILLION copies in the US alone, came out a FULL YEAR before that. Mariah must be smoking some good stuff to think no one knew who Jay was by then.

      1. She’s talking about everybody in the world not knowing who he was.. Jay Z wasn’t as famous as he is now back then..5 million copies ? come on there’s billions of people in the world and everybody didn’t know him like they do now.

        1. a SHITload of people already knew about Jay by this point. FYI, V.2 was his biggest selling album. And even then when sales were still large, not ALL That many albums went FIVE times plat. Jay was HUGE by this point. V.2 was his breakout album. Now if she said “no one knew who he was” BEFORE V.2, then yeah she MIGHT be not that far off. But V.2 catapulted him into superstardom.
