Issa Rae Credits Jermaine Dupri’s Female Rapper Shade For Birthing HBO Max’s ‘Rap Shit’

With Issa Rae’s Rap Shit slated to hit HBO Max, the Insecure star was the latest subject of a Rolling Stone feature on Thursday (April 15). With the show centering on telling the story of two female best friends becoming rappers, Rae admitted the plot was partly inspired by Jermaine Dupri’s criticism of the genre being “strippers rapping.”

“I was just like, ‘This is so unfair,’” she said of Dupri’s disparaging comments. “So that inspired the writing of it.”

With the show being loosely based on the life of the City Girls duo JT and Yung Miami, Issa Rae made sure to shout-out woman rappers having a major impact on mainstream Hip Hop right now such as “WAP” collaborators Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. Issa Rae is “fascinated” by their success maneuvering through reality television and social media.

Back in 2019, the So So Def boss told People that he felt female rappers were all just talking about their “pussies” and there was a lack of diversity in the content.

“I feel they’re all rapping about the same thing,” Jermaine Dupri said at the time. “I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper,” he said. “For me, it’s like strippers rapping and as far as rap goes I’m not getting who’s the best rapper.”

He continued, “I’m getting like, ‘Oh, you got a story about you dancing in the club. You got a story about you dancing in the club. You got a story about you dancing in the club’…OK, all right, who’s gonna be the rapper?”

Rap Shit received an eight-episode order from HBO Max in February. City Girls are on board as executive producers alongside Quality Control Music heads Coach K and Pee Thomas for Quality Control Films. The show is set to begin filming this summer.

    1. We already know this show is going to have all the checkboxes for women like Issa Rae:

      – Disparaging comments about black men
      – Anti-heterosexual themes
      – An lgbt agenda
      – Depicting black people as the lowest form of human

    2. JD was off base in that there are dope female rappers (ex. Raposody is better than 99% of the dudes out there)….. but Issa trying to argue against that by shouting out Cardi B and Megan is exactly what JD was talking about.

      1. You can always find exemptions to the rule. His point was that most female rappers share the same content…and they DO! Now to be fair a lot of male artist do the same thing as well. It just feels as though hip hop has become stagnant. It feels like there is way less diversity in hip hop than its ever been. If it’s a female rapper most likely she’s talking about how good her sex is and if it’s a guy rapper he’s going to have stacks of money in his video and possibly some guns and fake goons.

    3. 1. He was talking about mainstream rappers. 2. If he was wrong, then how come Rapsody and Tierra Whack dont get much exposure?
