Immortal Technique’s perspective on all things political in Hip Hop is often thought-provoking. When the topic of Kanye West’s poignant song, “New Slaves” was brought up in a recent interview with Vlad TV, the Harlem native gave his opinion on the matter.
“I don’t even know why he said that, did he say that to evoke thought?” Tech said when asked what he thought about the song. “I wouldn’t say that rich black people are the new slaves, that would be ridiculous, but are rich black people being mentally enslaved? Absolutely, because if they had any sense they would start their own industries that benefited some of their own people.”
Immortal Technique admits that he wasn’t sure what Kanye’s motive was with the song and that he hasn’t even heard it, but he said he did agree that people can be wealthy and enslaved at the same time.
“This is my disclaimer, I don’t know what his mental state was, I haven’t heard the song so I don’t know what the fuck else was said in that verse or what was said in conjunction with that verse,” he explained. “But can people be fabulously wealthy and still be blind as fuck? Yes…they can.”
During the same sit down, Tech previously said that people will forget about Trayvon Martin and that “the government should be willing to sacrifice itself for the benefit of the people.”

It’s odd, the first man who actually makes an accurate comment about black people gets slandered by the few who have decided to comment. Look around you, most races generally band together, Indian, Asian, white etc. But for some reason, black men and women are conflicted to thinking that we must confront each other in our menial struggle for material things under the guise of the poverty that most of us live in.
The one’s who have made it out, do they give back? Maybe they give enough to charities to become eligible for their tax breaks, maybe they enter Hollywood, make a movie with an all black cast, start a record label and put the talented youngsters in the spotlight, maybe they go back to their neighbourhoods and make some generous donations for a day, maybe.
But the problem is, we all know what the entertainment industry is as a whole, it creates jobs for those who have already made it out – it doesn’t do anything for the ones still struggling, not really. We make it out and stay out, never looking back to the world that raised us. The one’s that do are stupid enough to follow a life of crime, thinking that’s the way to be.
We need industries to match those that currently hold monopoly on the world, but I can safely say, no-one has branched out and truly done that.
Please, correct me if I’m wrong, I’m merely saying it based on what I see.

I’ll answer your post with a question. Is money the fix-all for “our” problems? Or can it be the absence of stabilized families and support systems to ensure that the youth are mentally and morally stable? Who’s responsible for YOUR kid(s) being out in the street doing God knows what with God knows who?
The answer to that question has nothing to do with money and everything to do with responsibility. I find it interesting that Tech and others call out the “industry” but won’t call out his right hand man who’s probably ducking child support or hustling in the streets right now. The same way people want to blame the President for every little thing but give the local Alderman a free pass.
The difference between the wealthy and the poor is that one side has been “enslaved” by something that works and the other side by something that does not. Obviously, its not that simple in all cases but in many cases it is.
If we want to fix our problems on a large scale, its got to be done from the very bottom, the foundation. That means not giving a fuck what Oprah, Jay-Z, Puffy etc. do with their money, and more giving a fuck with what you are directly in control of. Besides, ever heard of a wealthy person taking advice on how to be successful from a poor person?
