Drake Reportedly Had More Streams In 2021 Than All Songs Released Before 1980

Drake is the king of streams in rap and routinely among the most streamed artists in the world, regardless of genre. A recent pull of market data by Billboard proved not only is the 6 God resetting what current trends are on the streaming charts, but he’s also outpacing entire decades of music.

The data record revealed the OVO artist generated more U.S. on-demand streams in 2021 than all pre-1980 records combined. The entertainment analytics company Luminate, formerly MRC Data, compiled the release and Billboard reviewed the 988.154 billion U.S. streams from 2021 and provided a decade-by-decade breakdown to highlight how older albums from new artists are becoming increasingly en vogue in regard to streaming metrics.

The catalog business, outlined as releases 18 months or older, accounted for nearly 70 percent of album consumption last year, but 90 percent of those units came from records released since 2000. In Billboard‘s tabulation, only 0.6 percent of music released from 1950 to 1979 was consumed via stream, while Drake alone was responsible for 0.8 percent of total streams in 2021, an absurd feat considering his first official mixtape arrived more than 15 years ago and his ascent toward superstardom began with So Far Gone in 2009.

In 2021 alone, Drake pulled in 8.6 billion on-demand streams by himself. In other words, he was responsible for one of every 131 streams in the year. In September 2021, Drake dropped Certified Lover Boy, which broke Apple Music and Spotify single-day records and helped Drake become Spotify’s streaming king of the year.

Drake & NBA YoungBoy Lead 2022 Streaming Race As Hip Hop Dominance Continues

The OVO leader may have stiff competition if he wants to be the king of streaming in 2022. According to Chart Data, Drake led the first ten weeks of the year with 1.4 billion on-demand streams, without any new music. Trailing right behind him is NBA YoungBoy, with 1.3 billion on-demand streams and a penchant for releasing new projects on a near-monthly basis.

    1. What kind of asinine statistic is this? Two different eras of music consumed by two completely different generations of people. Earth, Wind, and Fire has sold more physical albums than Drake. Who cares?

    2. Streaming sucks. Fuck headphones. Give me two 12 inch subwoofers so I can piss off the neighbors. MP3 is the best and its free.

    3. .6 percent was consumed via streams through 1950 to 1979. What a dumb statistic to compare to lol That’s like saying Disney has sold more HD movies than all other HD movies combined sold from 1980 to 2005. Umm there like werent any lol Eminem will always be the number one seller regardless of when Drake or Em retire. It’s not even close.

    4. We gotta admit drake changed the rap game when he debuted. Only a hand full of artist have done that between the 80s up until now. We all know who those rappers are. Comparing streams to physical sales isn’t fair. We had to take time off to drive, stand in line to buy music before streaming. Getting millions of people to do that is something special

      1. He certainly did change it. I have lost interest in most rap since every artist nowadays wants to sound like and be the next Drake. Rap is not the same genre as it was before Drake became popular. Hip hop is now hip pop, and all of the quality rap is less and less popular. Honestly pre-1980s music is of a much higher quality.

    5. the game is changing and real fans are understanding the importance of buying records and supporting artists directly. only simps and clowns think music is free. spotify isn’t in the business of selling pre 1980 music and for the most part streaming music from that era and earlier doesn’t make some 7 year old with a cellphone cool in the school yard. streaming drake over and over does. how many kids stream drake at school because they want other kids to think they are cool? it’s a whole different metric has nothing to do with quality

      1. If u read the article it said the old music together that got streamed pretty much so Drake did all alone Faxtz so basically he’s a smart artist and know how to give to he ppl what they want. Not saying he’s the best butttt he’s the best to do what he did …….!!!

    6. Irrelevant stat, except for Drake promotion which is what he is actually good at. Most older musicians had far higher physical sales than what Drake could ever manage himself
