SZA was among the array of stars at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday night (April 3). After 13 nominations, the TDE songstress finally landed her first Grammy award as her “Kiss Me More” collaboration with Doja Cat won Best Pop/Duo Group Performance.
SZA’s big moment came with a bit of difficulty, though, as she hobbled to the stage on crutches to accept the award alongside Doja Cat. “Thank you, Doja,” she said after the Planet Her star showered her with praise. “Thank you to my momma, thank you to God and just thank all of y’all.”
Following the awards ceremony, SZA — clutching her shiny new gramophone along with her crutches — spoke with Variety backstage in the TV/radio room, where she gave an update on her long-awaited new album.

“Very much so,” she replied when asked if the project is coming soon. “I just actually finished it up in Hawaii recently.”
While she didn’t divulge too much detail, SZA did hint at the album venturing away from the themes and sounds of her previous effort, 2017’s CTRL, which was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards while debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
“It’s probably my most unisex project yet, if that makes sense,” she added. “It’s definitely for everybody, in a different way.”
SZA also explained why she was on crutches, revealing she sustained an inconvenient (if slightly comical) injury the day before the Grammys.

“It’s very funny because I fell out of bed right before it was time to leave and get ready for this, like the day before,” she said. “But that’s the way it goes. Everything awesome in my life has always come with something very random, but it just adds to the energy.”
Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrence “Punch” Henderson shed more light on SZA’s injury on Twitter while applauding her for not letting it ruin her big night.
“SZA twisted her ankle the night before the awards, really hours before. She almost cancelled,” he wrote. “It was super inspiring to see her power thru and make it at the tail end of the red carpet and then go up on stage with crutches to get the trophy with doja. Salute.”
